Weird problem with my mining RIG

Hi guys,

last weekend I tortured myself and my rig with the regular AMD driver updates, which after 3 hours or nonstop restarting I managed to configure.

Yesterday, due to the high temps I shutdown the rig and since then I cannot turn it back on?!

When I push the little button on the PSU from 0 to 1, the rig immediately receives electricity, powers up the cards and the CPU, but in less than a second it shutdowns.
I tried switching the PCI slots on the mainboard, because I thought maybe they may have caused this problem to occur, but the rig still continues to do the same thing, as if it is in a weird loop and it reboots itself every 4-5 seconds...
No sound indication like broken RAM memory or something like it.

Has someone experienced something like this? I literally tried powering this thing on like 10+ times, but now I would like to know how to troubleshoot it and fix it...

take out the memory ram and clean it or try with another working unit.

Those symptoms are usually related to memory.

Do you have another rig or spare parts to test?

Do as others said, clean the memory stick and try again (clean with isopropyl alcohol 99% or with an eraser)

If the problem persists, you'll have to test the entire rig, try to start with only the basic, one GPU, another ram stick if you have, another PSU
if the temperature has reached a very high level, it may have damaged some part

Hey guys,

thank you for the responses. I 've been a bit busy and didn't have much time to check out my rig, honestly, I didn't want the additional stress of finding out that some part of my rig is broken and needs replacement...

So today I managed to check it and found something strange - the rig still doesnt power up, even if I cleaned the ram stick and the slots on the mainboard (also used canned air to remove dust balls), but the machine continues to just turn it's lights on and then goes off instantly.

When I unplug the power cable from the power supply, the rig does not have any electricity to it right? But I saw on a couple of occasions, that I turns up and spins the PSU and some of the cards for just a second and then the usual power off...

What is this telling you?

I tried to get a ram stick from my older computer, but it's a DDR2 memory and doesn't fit on the mainboard... I have tried to power it up without having any gpu's connected to the mainboard and it still the same..

That's bad news. Here are some tips to help isolate the problem.

1. Check all connections.

2. Remove 1 RAM stick at a time if you don't have a substitute.

3. Remove everything not critical to POST including all storage and boot device.  

4. Try another PSU.

If it still won't power on it's the mobo or CPU.

I disconnected everything, leaving only the PSU, RAM and CPU + the SSD storage, but it continues to fail to start up.

I even tried plugging the rig into another socket, just because I thought, that the power strip might have gone bad, but nada...

The mobo is emitting a green light, doesn't seem like it's having a problem...?

EDIT: the pwr_on diode is emitting the green light...

Unplug all your cards (including their power cables). Leave just cpu, one stick of ram and ssd plugged in(including sata power, 24 pin and EPS connectors). Then try and power it on. IF it powers on then resintall one gpu at a time and let it run for a bit then shutdown (properly) and install the next card. Keep going until you hopefully find the problem.

I ask what psu you own as many will burn up and die mining.

Some atx psu's do not  like to do 80% of rating 24/7/365

Remove the SSD too. It's not about booting, it's not even about the BIOS.
It's about power.

It's either a faulty PSU, a faulty mobo or, less likely, a short somewhere else that's tripping the PSU.

I already suggested how to proceed.

I never had any problem with PSU in my rigs, but a couple of times in my gaming PC, and I know it's not easy to find, because it's not only a single issue, sometimes the PSU dies completely, but a few times PSU acts weird, with problems in the 12v line, or the 5v line, or it works only with a certain load, and the right thing to do is test another PSU
If you don't have a spare PSU, try to find a friend and test for you

If you are a miner.  The psu tester is only 13 usd maybe 14. You really should own one.

Also owning a cheap piece of shit psu. Can test mobo boot drive ram and One card.

Just to be clear a PSU tester is nothing fancy, it's just a jumper for the ATX connector that bypasses the
mobo's power control. The're also used in multi PSU rigs to force the secondary PSU to power on.
Some PSUs come with one.

Another troubleshooting technique is the smell test. That burnt smell is unmistakeable.

I hate that burnt smell... i'm so attuned to it that i start running around the house in a panic when ever i smell that acidic electronic smell.

Okay guys, just got back my configuration from a service.

They callled me this morning to report, that everything is powering up normally.
I just tested that and it boots to windows, but I've got all of the GPUs and riser boards disconnected.

I will now try to connect them one by one to isolate the problem and will update you:D

Okay, as of now, the rig is still working like it was 2 weeks ago... 

I've got no idea what's currently going on with this system, but thank God it's working again and I do not have to search for parts and do any HW replacements, as I am thinking of expanding with another rig before X-Mas.

Probably a riser issue
Risers are the most problematic part of the rig, it's wise to have some spare risers
So, test with another rise, and double check if the power cable are connected to card and riser
