Hello guys, I've been lurking quite a bit before making an account on this forum. I'm interested in increasing my rank, and I noticed something called merit, which we obtain by others giving it to us. I was wondering how this works, do you ask for merit, do people just randomly give it out? I am unsure on how this whole thing works

Welcome =) First of all: There is no easy way to receive merit! You can and receive merit by posting meaningful and useful posts. This has been asked multiple times, I would search the forum for more helpful posts by other users. Big Thread with lots of useful repliesJust be active, post useful comments or contents and the merit will come. Don't ask for Merit, never a good thing here.

Welcome to the forum, and to answer your question, no you don't ask/beg for merit, merit is something you work for Want to know more about merit/how it functions + Merit is one of the essentials to ranking up -the other one is activities- Want to know more about What ranking up is Merit is a requirement that rank you up in membership and improves you all-round(ship). You passed a good mark as a newbie which is ask -on what you not clear on- the rest which would be and more + Read/search, + Time - be judicious with it- + Your knowledge/compression -suppy/present it, ameliorate it- + Service,kindness/benignant

Why are you interested in increasing your rank, and what will it do for you? Is it because you want to earn money on the forum, or is it for some other reason?
The thing with merit is that you shouldn't have to seek it out if you're the type of person who will receive merit. If you are merely constructing high-quality replies for merit as a means rather than acquiring merit as a byproduct of your good posts, then that will be a problem. Especially given that certain ilk have nothing better to do than post spam across the forum to collect their signature campaign payments (and that we have new users aiming to direct themselves towards that path), I will heavily advise against thinking of the forum as a financial collectathon.

Welcome to the community, First, you are not allowed to ask/beg merit to others and if they thought that your post is constructive/helpful and decent to get merits they will give it to you. You can see more details on how merit system work here : FAQ: Everything you need to know about forum 'activity, account ranks and merit

<...> I was wondering how this works, do you ask for merit, do people just randomly give it out? I am unsure on how this whole thing works
I won't advice that you "ask" for merit. Like, "Hey, can you give me some merit? I would like to have one." I mean, I don't think it works that way. Merit is something that is given without you asking for it. Usually, merit is given when a fellow forum member liked your comment to a thread or a thread you created. How do they like it? Well, that depends on them actually. There's no fixed criteria to give one some merits since all of us have different tastes and different point of views. Just think of it as the "like" or "reacts" you get in social media like Facebook. So for me, in order to obtain merit, you have to post with a good quality. It doesn't have to be lengthy. It just have to be relevant to the topic being discussed. Also, try to click those links they've mentioned before me, then learn from it. Welcome to the forum, by the way. Strive to learn and have fun!

Technically providing informative and quality post will do. High merited post had made much time of preparations, gathering datas before posting it. Just think of a day, a week or even a month in gathering informations and data that could be presented as a post.
However, not all merited posts needed high preparations. Sometimes it is just need to be unique direct to the point which replies could answer and helpful to OP. See the reply posts above. Those are consider helpful in your part and others that will be reading the replies.
Now, if you have extra talent and your genius in computer running programs, creating useful data that could be shared in this forum then definitely you can easily surpass low ranks here.

Sometimes I get the opinion that newcomers misunderstand the purpose of the forum. The forum primarily includes communication about Bitcoins, the expansion of your knowledge, and the exchange of information. And only, secondly, this is a forum where you can earn some money. Merits were simply conceived as a small bonus for a well-written post. It’s important to ask yourself why do you need a forum? If it's participation in Bounty companies, I will disappoint you, sometimes people lose time to participate in them.. Spend your time and energy on learning, and then your merits will certainly come to you. Your rank with this approach to the forum will grow imperceptibly for you.

Merit is like likes on social media platforms. Here it is an endorsement for an excellent job done. Focus more on improving the teaching of the blockchain focusing on Bitcoin as your main topics. Merits will definitely come if you are unique enough. My one cent.

You could simply just normally converse with the people here and if people found you helpful, some might throw you some merits here and there. As far as I know I've earned most of my merits discussing some topics but not necessarily teaching.

I can testify to this statement too, in addition don't try too much as you'll just appear desperate. I read replies that are as long as hell but makes no sense since unnecessary words or sentences have given another meaning to the post but they could have be simply summaries in 4-5 lines and would had made perfect sense. PS: Don't follow the crowd, try to be different. Make your readers always wanting and looking forward to read your replies on topics been discourage, keep your writing simple.

Don't ask for merits let the merits comes to you for that you need to make informative posts or something useful to the community.I wonder why you want to increase your rank when you just posted your first post in bitcointalk.

Anyway, accumulating knowledge is better than receiving merit. Because merit is an incentive given for those who give time also to know the cryptography/forum.

Besides the references provided on this (and 100 similar threads), one can always resort to observing what type of posts are being merited, and derive a general idea from that observation (see https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=recent for example). The idea is not to copy anyone’s style, but rather to get a feeling of what is actually being merited on the forum, and from there, abstract an idea lead by example.

If someone gives you a merit, it means that he rewards you in some way because your post helped him or he considers it constructive. It depends on the other members and is not an automatic action but their free will. That's why I advise you not to think too much about it but try to write well, help others and if you succeed in that other members will reward you.

It helps if you have a broad knowledge of blockchain tech/BTC in general and helping others out/explaining some stuff a significant % of members had no idea of though. People may throw a lot more merits at you, as you've most likely seen with some members out here. Otherwise I'd say it's mostly a subjective thing - if one believes you deserve a merit, they'll give it to you although maybe for others your reply is silly. But that obviously is the case only if you also spend a bit of time to think and construct your reply. My case is the same as yours - I earned most of my merits through discussions as well.

To the best of my knowledge I know that you don't earn merits just like like that you can earn it through some of the reasonable post you make or some friends will send it for you but you can't earn it through the post you make here.

For sure. While I'm definitely not to brag, I(and along with a lot of you here) could somewhat easily tell if someone created a topic primarily to share something, compared to someone who created a topic that's primarily to earn merits. Those topics that are full with highly technical terms but altogether makes little sense. Oh and don't get me started on those "how to earn merit" topics that are made by people who have little to no merit and those sort of "how to be a good Bitcointalk user" topics. One of my eyebrows instinctively rise when I see those kinds of posts.

All answers here are very educative, informative and easy to understand. Merit is like a reward you get from posting a useful and informative comment and/post on the forum. Asking for merit is totally wrong reason been that you are lazy and can not help in promoting the community, better still that you don't have anything to offer..check: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2818350.0 for more details about Merit
