Perhaps he means by underclocking them you get a longer lifespan, anyway the part below doesn't seem to be accurate.

Antminer S9 on native firmware from Bitmain produces:
S9 14 TH / s - 1360 watts.

On our: 16 TH / s - 1290 watt

S9 does 14TH at well below 1300 watts (1250w +-) with Asicboost enabled by default on all recent native firmware, also without Asicboost 16th at 1300w range is not possible by any means, so it's only fair to compare both firmware with Asicboost enabled/disabled and not cherry-pick numbers to advertise a firmware, with that being said, it's, without doubt, safe to assure that the native firmware lacks a ton of features.
