Over the years, there have been hundreds of such fake giveaways that used the name of Elon Musk, and this was especially pronounced during 2017 when Twitter was literally on fire due to the rising price of BTC and ETH. If someone asks you to send 0.01 of something to get 0.02 of the same back, it is quite clear that it cannot be legitimate.

According to one research, this is a very profitable way of cheating people - in the last 3 months alone, scammers have gained 215 BTC in this way.

Justin Lister, CEO of cybersecurity firm Adaptiv, who has been tracking the bitcoin addresses misusing Musk’s name over the past month, said he was able to track down 66 such addresses. Speaking to ZDNet, he said he was able to identify the addresses with the aid of BitcoinAbuse, a public database of bitcoin addresses used by scammers, hackers, and various other cybercriminals. According to Lister, the 66 addresses have received over 201 Bitcoin since their creation in April 2020.

ZDNet was able to identify an additional 67th address, which has received another 13.9 Bitcoin, bringing the total to some 215 Bitcoin. Based on today’s exchange rate, this is equivalent to US$2.03 million.

There's also a (relatively known) similar one where the scammers take a popular video, in this case from Elon Musk, put it on YouTube and add information for such "giveaways". They have thousands of bots commenting the video, making it seem legit to the unsuspecting visitor.

They're really putting some effort into this, however one rarely hears from victims who fell prey to these kinds of scams.

What is happening on telegram now is in the form image/ screnshoot like this, which displays a scam website, maybe website above is one part from this trap. If we are smart, you should check the related Twitter account first.

~

Only other non-bitcointalk forum users would be fooled with such schemes. Providing a screenshot with a famous celebrity or person mostly in social media platforms often were made by simply inspecting the element on the browser and changing its content, then snip it and fool someone to go to your link. I've already seen a lot of telegram chats and spams that were only providing such screenshots yet we cannot blame those that were fooled because they really had this idea that there's such thing as "easy money". But still, shame on those who are behind such immoral activities.

They are still running there scamming in the same way. I have a confusion that whether they can earn their cost of effort or not by these giveaways nowadays. Because I guess most of the people in crypto world are aware of it.

@witcher_sense you did a good job by reporting the bitcoin address in scamalert. It's now confirmed.

Unfortunately, it requires very low effort to scam people that way. All you need is register domain name with "tesla" or "elon musk" in it, use template to make things look like a post on Medium, put your BTC address and wait for payments from naive crypto newcommers. There are still many people who believe everything said on the Internet, especially, when scammers use fake pictures of Elon Musk twitter to add their giveaways some degree of legitimacy. Address I reported previously has recieved payment of 400$, I assume it covers costs of registering domain. Low effort to gain big profit is a dangerous scheme that may be discouraging factor for honest users who want to join cryptocurrency space.

Yeah, if you insist on collecting this scam event, there are already plenty out there, especially on social media. Pretty good and simple if you collect important details such as the site and wallet address in main thread. Just giving advice, so other users can immediately find what he's looking for.

I wonder when this will end, we are having to much of these scam giveaways, are they not going to give up are they still getting a lot of money, it cost them to launch this kind of giveaway it will only stopped if people will stop sending coins, to their wallet, but there are still so many newbies who are unaware of this.

If you hear about a number Twitter accounts hacked yesterday, you will know that they are one of these, but yes, they really have talent but are not used for good. And indeed, newbies are easy targets.

After seeing the news of recent twitter hacking of Elon musk, Bill gates, kucoin, Coinbase and many more accounts it seems to me that a specific group is working behind all these. I was really surprised but style of hackers common posts in all account with the same btc address looks kinda unprofessional to me. Although the damage wasn’t too big and hackers wallet address only got 12 BTC deposit but they were expecting much more for sure. Even i was expecting that they will be able to steal a big amount of fund through this historical hacking.

Its been a long time crypto investors are suffering with bitcoin doubler traps and this attempt was another one from the same field. Good news is that nowadays crypto investors are enough careful about ponzi, Hyip and doubler projects and a limited number of greedy people exist who still believe on this kinda projects.

For last couple of month we were experiencing facebook Libra related clones and fake websites but now this scammers are running after popular business icons like Elon musk. Maybe its the the reason why Tesla founder Elon Musk's name is getting much popular in crypto world rather then Hybrid vehicle industry.

I'd like to commend members here who keeps posting similar scams like this, we should keep on posting although they may look like similar threads this is to save these people who will do a research on this kind of giveaway I hope they do so they can find this new type or kind of scam giveaways, I still wonder when all this kind of scam stops or they will stop and resume after several months.
As we see now, they have not stopped, I think they will continue if there is still trapped, just by creating a new website and posting to social media, and they are looking for prey newbie or those who are still easily fooled without thinking. All we can do is report posts if we find, or spread the word about this fraud on social media, it will be very helpful.
