I don't know what happened but the DNS quit working for me for many many / almost all websites so I tried to come here to see if their was news about it or something..

I tried going directly to the IP to skip the DNS (that's how it works right?) but then I got this..

"Error 1003 Ray ID: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX • 2020-07-17 21:31:53 UTC
Direct IP access not allowed
What happened?
You've requested an IP address that is part of the Cloudflare network. A valid Host header must be supplied to reach the desired website.
"

I'm not a hacker.. I have no idea how all of that really works.. But..

If DNS goes down or whatever how can we access BTCT?
If things go crazy I need news..

I guess nothing happened except for me, but it might..

What's the emergency contingency plan to stay in contact with the world via BTCT? Or other?

Possible if the worst is happend i guess there is Chance to get in contact via discord for getting Informations and news.
For sure its only a second solution but better as nothing i guess.
And about the DNS i dont know eighter how it all works.
We got that Problem already when there was some problems with cloudflare, dont know if remember that.

Almost all sites are/were down. Twitter is still up, youtube works too. Best part is, all the sites that tell you which sites are down, are down.

Anywhow apparently, there was no attack, it was just a router error.

Ref: https://techcrunch.com/2020/07/17/cloudflare-dns-goes-down-taking-a-large-piece-of-the-internet-with-it/

https://twitter.com/eastdakota/status/1284253034596331520

All in all, don't worry the internet isn't dying.

Even my VPS/website (ninjastic.space) that hosts my Telegram bot was down for a bit. This, along with BitcoinTalk's downtime, put a lot of error lines on my logs. Tongue

CF is very cheap, but they do business inside China, which means they are friendly with the CCP, which implies they are willing to censor content at the request of the CCP. My suggestion is to find an alternate DDoS protection service.

I'm not sure if this is relevant, but Windows has just had a forced update, and it tried to insist that I switched to some new version of Edge amongst other things. It has messed up a few of my options as well. I guess it is time I went back to the Linux SSD that I set up to replace the HDD in the notebook. I'm also getting delays in connecting to many sites.

The new Edge is very sleek, fast, uses the chromium browser and MUCH less RAM than Chrome.

You can't go wrong with choosing Linux vs Windows. There will never be forced updates without user consent. I have long been disillusioned with Microsoft and having switched to the Linux system, I have no difficulty in getting to the forum and other sites. I don’t know if this is relevant, Cloudflare DNS also works for me

I thought privacy was only a concern for Microsoft when governments wanted to look at its accounts

Cloudfare has nothing to do with operating systems and the outage was for everyone who uses windows or Linux. All cloudfare operations are back to normal now.
Although Linux provides a better security but many people will still prefer Windows operating system because they are used to it and Linux may not be as user friendly as windows is.

Yeah something like that.. I don't really like the idea of the cloudfare monopoly either..
What about something like an onion mirror? Would that work for an emergency backup that is pretty secure?

An onion mirror would be the same as no DDOS protection as to my knowledge, the source of all requests look the same. Unless you are referring to an onion mirror being given privately to someone, but I would not suggest doing this because the person receiving the mirror address would only be able to access the forum via tor, but a non-onion address could be accessed via tor, and via the clearnet.

That should be a last attempt solution, because it would cut most casual users off.  PM7 had a good idea after my post to proxy the entrance IP so you could change it after each issue.

Name resolution is part of the OSI network protocol.  TOR still uses OSI, but with it's own dependent services, including name resolution.

Some charts display DNS as a top level layer, but I was taught name to IP is encapsulated before transport layer breaks into into sendable packets.  But that education is now thirty years old.  :/
