Month of February is already here and it is time for another overview of bitcoin mining pools. We have a bug jump with FoundryUSA that now holds more than 40% of total hashrate in first place, that is 9% more than last month. AntPool remains in second place with 15.28% hashrate, so first two pools have 55.56% together, this is not a good thing! F2Pool is in third place with 13.89% followed by ViaBTC with 8.33%, that is a switch from previous month. SpiderPool has grown more with 7.64% and below we have all smaller pools, Binance dropped to 0-69% now. https://mempool.space/graphs/mining/pools

Foundry USA has a lot of mining capacity in Texas. Due to winter storm Fern, which brought freezing temperatures to the US, many miners were forced to shut down their equipment.
March will be warmer, so we should see hashrate growth again at US pools in the next report.

I didnt know about that severe weather conditions, so thank you for informing us about that. We are going to continue observing if things changes in out next report and if hashrate increases again. For me it is better to have more pools sharing hashrate than one big pool that dominates all others.

This suggests that many miners are restarting their equipment. https://www.blockchain.com/explorer/charts/difficultyYou can always find more detailed statistics on this resource. It includes data even on the smallest mining pools. https://miningpoolstats.stream/bitcoin

April arrived and I have to say big news that two biggest pools Foundry USA and AntPool just shut down their operation! Dont worry, I was just joking, and there are no big changes compared to March report. FoundryUSA remains on top with almost 24% of hashrate, followed by AntPool with almost 20% hashrate. F2Pool is stainyg in third place with14.34% that is few percent increase from March, and SpiderPool in in fourth place with 10.43% hasharte. Rest of the pools have bellow 10% with ViaBTC having around 8%, MARA Pool 5.52% and Binance pool now has 3.68%, less than in March. We could see more changes in coming months because of higher energy prices. https://mempool.space/graphs/mining/pools

New report is here for month of May. Foundry USA remains in first place with increased hashrate of 30.61%, and it is followed by Antpool with 21% in second place. This two pools already have over 51% of hashrate, and after them SECPOOL made a jump to third place with 8.84% hashrate. ViaBTC is forth biggest pool with 8.16% hashrate, and it is sharing it with F2Pool and Spiderpool that both have same 8.16% hashrate. Mara pool is after them with 6.8%, with all other pool having less than 5%, and I think many small pools stopped working. https://mempool.space/graphs/mining/pools

Month of June is already here and it is time for another report from Bitcoin mining pools. Foundry USA is still the biggest mining pool but hashrate dropped a lot to just above 21%, and Antpool is now only a few percent below with 17.65%. SpiderPool is now in third place, I think for the first time since I am tracking, and they have 12.5% hasharte. F2Pool is forth biggest pool with 11% hashrate, and after them we have ViaBTC with 8%, and another new OCEAN pool with 6.62% hashrate, same as Mara Pool. Secpool is the last one with over 5% and than we have smaller pools, including Binance pool with 1.47% hashrate. https://mempool.space/graphs/mining/pools

The numbers are worth watching, but I think we have to be careful about equating mining pool share with actual mining centralisation. A pool can represent many independent miners, so 20%+ pool share doesn’t necessarily means the pool operator controls 20% of the network’s hash power. For me the most important issue is how much control the large pools have over block construction and transaction section. If miners can use things like stratum V2 to have more control over what goes into the block, then the risk from pool concentration will be reduced. So I think we also have to be watching both numbers; who has the hashrate, and who actually has control over the blocks being produced.

Why would a publicly American company engage in attacks on its own business? Pools will already choose the maximum possible profit, and miners will not spend money on additional infrastructure to set up a node and control transactions. Monitor the hashrate after August 15th, miners consuming 1 gigawatt of power in Moscow and the surrounding region are expected to shut down.
