Punishment for rule breaking

The following rules are broken all the time by some users, sometimes high profile user.
1. Refferal link
2. Bump

When such cases are reported, moderator/admin delete the post. But since they are breaking rules, may be it is minor, if there is no punishment, I think they will abuse the system. I am not talking about anyone particularly. There are high profile users who are very active in the forum, in meta board also. Do not you think they know the above two rules? Ban of referral link sharing is common sense, moreovwr anyone spending two/three months should know the rules. "Bumps are limited to 24 hours." This is also matter of common sense, also this is practiced in most of the forums.
In my opinion, there should be minor punishment for breaking such rules. Orherwise, high profile users will continue there rule breaking strategy by impersonating as unfamiliar with such rules.

The bump rule has issues.


You would be surprised how often a post is deleted and it looks like it was a bump.

There is temp ban(for few days) punishment for reflinks if continued will lead to permaban. I remember recently there is a guy who posted about being banned for 3days due to reflinks just forget his username.

Only the Admin can fully answer and take policy.

Regarding penalties for violating forum rules.

If the topic post of a topic gives very specific rules for the topic, I will use those rules in addition to the global board policies for that topic. The starter of the topic may not change rules after posting their topic (not even by editing the topic post). Local rules can't specify punishments, though people may be banned for breaking local rules too much.

The rules must be specific enough that it takes less than a few seconds to decide whether a post breaks them. When you report posts like these, you must quote the local rule that was broken. Rules will be ignored if they are not specific enough, or if it takes too much work to enforce them.

It is possible for someone to create a "ruleset" that others can quickly apply to their topics by clearly linking to the ruleset.

(It has always been my policy to enforce local rules, though not many people have created topics with such rules.)

It would be better to give them notice for the first time.  If he does it a second time, it is better for the forum to punish him.  If it is punished, it cannot be mistaken for all other members to understand.  I agree with @Little Mouse.

Thank you for the response. I did not know that user got warning. I knew that there post only get deleted. Out of curiosity, what kind of warning you give. Like some other forum software, I do not see any warning notification in smf. Or may be not in bitcointalk at least. How an user will know that they have been warned?

Usually via PM or sometimes in their thread if it's a bumping issue. I usually do that so I can keep an eye on whether they're still abusing it by bumping several times a day which some users do try to get away with. If they do that after the warning it's always going to earn them a temp ban.
