Is there a PoS (Proof of Stake) or hybrid PoW/PoS Coin out there without the centralized checkpointing mechanism used by Peercoin (PPC)?

It's a serious question.

Thanks. Although I had supposed it, I was not sure about NXT.

Are any of the PoS/PoW hybrids "checkpointless"?

It seems you are wrong with Growthcoin: It contains the code for the centralized checkpoint system - look at checkpoints.h after
Code:
// ppcoin: synchronized checkpoint
class CUnsignedSyncCheckpoint

Source: Growthcoin repo

PS: Hobonickels has the checkpoint system too.

It's easy to check. Open the debug window in the wallet app and type 'getcheckpoint'.

Unfortunately I have none of these coin wallets. Has somebody checked Growthcoin and Hobonickels (and/or others) for recent checkpoints?

But a problem is, that even if _now_ the devs of a coin do not use the checkpointing mechanism, they can use it when they want. So I tend to say that a coin is only truly "checkpointless" when it has no such mechanism in its code.
