I returned an item to Amazon and got a bunch of store credit, so I went through my wish list and decided it was time to buy a Nano X.

I'm not averse to reading instructions before asking questions, nor am I a complete dumbass (you might have a different opinion on that), but my question is this:  The first step in the instructions is to download Ledger Live, which I already have installed for my Nano S.  Is it possible to use the two devices on one PC and if so, how do I do it?  Is there an obvious solution to this that I'm missing or what?

And by the way, it is definitely a slick-looking device and I like the added heft compared to the Nano S.  I haven't really played around with it yet, but so far so good.  Any help would be appreciated.

I guess that depends on if you're going to use them with the same seed or set them up as "independent" devices with different seeds etc...

If they're "identical" (ie. both devices with same seed), you basically just plug and play with either device... and you can control the accounts with either device connected. if you want them to be independent, it gets a bit trickier, as you have to add all the accounts from both devices and Ledger advise you to name the accounts so you know which account belongs to which device.

It's the same for access any "hidden" accounts using the 2nd pin (different passphrases etc)... when you "add account" you just connect and unlock the device using the other PIN/Passphrase and it'll find the "hidden" accounts etc.

If you are pairing different Ledgers to Electrum all you need is to point it out to the correct data (named in proper way to facilitate this) which belongs to the given device.
He can do that after finishing the first set up, which apparently needs Ledger Live according to the guide (make sense since it needs to install the apps first). The answer is given by Ledger already for dual HW setup.

Keep in mind that Nano X can't connect to PC via bluetooth, so you need the cable.

Yeah, I wanted a completely different seed, but it sounds like that isn't going to be very convenient to do.  Ah well, I suppose if I ever end up buying a laptop I'll install LL on that and fire up the Nano X.  No rush.

But Ledger Live is still not well developed and has low functionality compared say with Electrum.
I'm not a computer savvy person, so I'll assume you are and respect your opinion, but I think it's a pretty decent app and has all the functionality I need.  I've never tried out another HW wallet except for the Keepkey (which has now found a home in the city dump) so I don't have much to compare it to.

Thanks for your input, guys.  I'm going to keep the thread open, because I still might read some good info.

Nope, there is no need  for Ledger Live accounting, just install btc app on both instances of wallets, and move further to Electrum, checked with nano s.

I think you misunderstood me. Ledger Live is used for the initial set up to install the apps (unless Ledger already installed some apps on the HW, which last time I remember they don't), so The Pharmacist has to connect to his HW to Ledger Live first (just like you said, "just install BTC app, then move to Electrum"). After that he can do what you suggested. But that's not what he asked on the OP.

If they have different seeds, then your options are either:
  • Use one instance of Ledger Live, add all the accounts from both devices, and just label them as "BTC S Legacy" and "BTC X SegWit" or similar so you know which is which, or
  • Have two separate copies of Ledger Live. I would achieve this by using virtual machines, but you can also do so very simply by using different accounts on your operating system.

Ledger Live is used for the initial set up to install the apps
I also happen to think Ledger Live is pretty trash and prefer to use Electrum, but more importantly than installing apps, Ledger Live is also used to verify the authenticity of your wallet when you first set it up. It is a vital first step.

It's not impossible... you just need to use a decent naming convention when you are adding the accounts to Ledger Live so that you don't get them mixed up. The downside being that it basically just lumps all the accounts together in the "portfolio" and "Accounts" section... you don't have any option to segregate them by device or even passphrase etc, so depending on your reasons for wanting "independent" devices, this could be a nuisance Undecided

Alternatively, as already mentioned, Electrum probably makes it easier to segregate your devices while using "one app", as you simply create a new wallet file within Electrum dedicated to the Nano "X"... and call it "NanoX_wallet" or something similar... and if you choose to encrypt the wallet, it won't even open without the device connected. The downside of using Electrum being that you will only have access to BTC.

In any case, you need LL to be able to install/remove/update the coin apps and any firmware updates etc.

Thanks to Leo for suggesting I use a different PC account, which just goes to show you how little I know about computers.  I swear sometimes I think I majored in the wrong subject in college and should have studied computer science.

Anyway, it worked and so I now can run both the Ledger S and X using separate LL accounts.  Thanks to everyone for their help, I do appreciate it very much.
