What is purpose of archive post?

I have been going through the forum, thread to thread for more information and guide but there is something I don't understand about this archive posts. I want to think they are for reference but may be there is more to it than just reference.

They're for a couple of things:
1. Reference links remain the same if someone refers to it in another thread.
2. You can look through old posts and anyone hero+ is able to reply to non locked ones afaik.
3. They're like a cold delete for threads that are outdated or when a board gets trashed. If the thread is deleted you lose your activity points and post count which may drop you down a rank. I think some sections there were pretty big so if a member posts exclusively there they could drop from a Sr-legendary to a newbie-full member

Archiving is like away of saving the contents of a website, web page links or forum thread posts online to a third party archive service so that In case the post in the  thread is deleted or edited, one can still refer to the unedited or undeleted saved version online in websites like https://archive.org or http://archive.is/

It's more like away of keeping a website's or web page's record online for future reference in case there are changes in the website/web page or in case the website goes offline

Archiving a post is more like stating the fact that, that post has acquired a lot of recognition and served it's purpose in total though, for the purpose of referencing, their isn't much point in deleting the post.
It's served it's purpose doesn't make it out of place. Some theories might be updated, while others aren't.

Archiving simply refers to storing evidences (e.g., saving bitcointalk thread or webpages) in case these information got deleted by its creator.

Commonly, it is mainly used for Scam Accusation and for the thread that is created from Reputation board.

It is solely for future reference. The purpose for using archived post, however, differs from each user. Most of the time, it's being used against other members or projects. Spend more time in the boards mentioned by Maus0728 and you'll understand what I mean.

The purpose of archiving is to put the file in a place . Those files/information that you archived are most likely needed in the future. When the time comes, you'll not be in trouble looking where did you put the files because you put them altogether on one place. You archived them.

Other users had pointed out already about it. But I think I can only add is that when you archive a file you can come back for it whenever you needed. It could be use as a reference to a something very important in the future. I have never been into making or doing archive of files instead I will just make a google search everytime I am confuae and needed a further explanation or information regarding to a certain topic wanting to learn.

And you can look at this archiving by @LoyceV, 53M posts! View unedited/deleted posts (search per post, per user or per topic). It literally save all of the community members posts for whatever purpose it may serve.

Indeed. It lessens our time finding those files that we are needing at the moment.
Archives serves to be an storage of files that you are important. Because why will we archive something if we do not need it?
We put them on a separate storage to find them easily. That's it.

I have noticed that too. They are mostly used to track down scammers thread and users who try to abuse the forum system.

Archive posts are made so that you save posts so that they if they are altered later, you can have the proof. Most used in scam accusation type of stuff.

Archival section is for the old stuff being archived.

I’m not sure if you are talking about the Archival forum board, or archieving pages on external sites such as Archive Today or TheWayBackMachine.

The former, the Archival board is used to store "old stuff". Some of the purposes are cited in this old thread that asked the same question: How does the archival board work? , including, but not limited to:

-   Store content of threads which are no longer needed (i.e. someone sold something and do not wish to keep the thread visible in the Marketplace, or long time finished campaigns).

-   Create test threads.

-   Act as a repository for obsolete boards/childboards (i.e. Removing Multibit section.


There’s this to go by:

Old threads don't need to be moved to Archival. Just lock them. Archival is meant to be used by moderators in only a few rare situations. (Though I don't mind if you move your obsolete topics there if you want to for some reason.)

The later, Archive external sites, are used for references in cases such as describes in this thread, as they conform a snapshot of a given page at a certain point in time. I often use them to retrieve statistical information (i.e. Archived Bitcointalk Index pages (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php) to retrieve the number of posts at a given point in time), and often they allow you to view historical information that is no longer available, such as this:

Assuming stats are true to reality (*), since the chart shows the data from a non-logged account (see https://web.archive.org/web/20140420114108/https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=3;sa=statPanel), the data shown should be in UTC. I’d say sleep times are from 7 UTC to  12 UTC, which for an IT intensive person could fall in the range of 2AM-7AM roughly (give or take an hour). Mapping 7 UTC to 2 AM would place the physical location to be in the UTC-5 range, which is most likely to be USA or Canada (see https://24timezones.com/timezone-map).

(*) I assume the stats are true, but they could have been altered (backoffice, on the Bitcointalk DB) at some point to throw people off course. The earliest snapshot I’ve found is from April 2014, over three years after the last connection from the account).
