Discord is popular because of the voice communication. You can play at the same while talking to each other. My college friend and I just used it when we've played Dota 2.

There's not that much difference with discord and slack. Discord just got the attention because of their exposure in various platforms.

Discord and telegram is not same, there are lot of different and telegram is something similar to whatsapp and better compared to it, where as discord is popular for multi voice channel and much easier for maintaining a community like thing.

Most probably because its quite easy to setup chatrooms and popular games are also utilizing it as some communication channel.

I aso remember that it's also a scam paradise because chatrooms can be deleted without a trace.

The main reason why Discord is so popular is because of their amazing support for chatrooms, moderation, bot support and other customisability. Slack is also good in this regard but they don't support voice channels and require the owner to pay for his or her server pretty quickly unlike Discord where paying for a server is not really needed unless you want to have access to some more customisability.

And when comparing it to Telegram it is a lot different like @semobo said Telegram is more similar to Whatsapp as a general chat app in which you can also have group chats.

Telegram is restricted in some countries as I've heard.
I heard Discord is purposely meant for gamers but it has different purpose now.
But I know nothing about slack for now.. So there should be a reason why some people will prefer Discord to Telegram and slack to Discord.

Discord is primarily a means of voice communication. Mainly for games, but not only. Plus, a convenient system of "rooms" where you can enter and exit at any time.
Telegram is more suitable for instant text forwarding and notifications. We all know how news channels are spread there. All because it is convenient and always at hand.
These are all different applications with different goals.

As others have said about the advantages and features, the reason why a lot are using it. But honestly, I came across this channel with lots of pump and dump coins like masternode coins. And if they are dealing with discord, they can disappear anytime without a trace. So I have negative notion when you need to buy a coin or MN via discord, because expect that you will lose money or not return your initial investments.

Why Discord became so popular?

Discord became very quick popular because first of all it's free. You have a lot of gamers who used to be on some Teamspeak servers where you had to pay a monthly fee and were very limited with your choices for layout / informations / chatting. Now with Discord it's much easier to include all that for free. After Discord came out I barely see anyone using Teamspeak or Skype. The second reason why it's so popular is because you can combine so many different servers into one App. I have 40+ Discord servers in my list just for various games. These connections weren't even possible before discord. Now you can easily see when people are online, what they are playing. It's a great app to keep in touch with friends. I am glad it's free. It might be using a lot of PC resources compared to other programms but with it's still great.

Telegram is full of scammers users and the most fooling in their apps is everyone can delete the full message History without you noticing until theres a need for review.

and Discord like what others says,the advantage is you can use the Voice chat while doing something like playing games online or similar things.

Telegram has private groups as well. I'm not really a fan of voice channels, but i imagine that is the same thing as mumble or teamspeak since Discord has always been game oriented.

One other feature I really enjoy in Discord are the music bots. You get free music all the time from playlist - it's like spotify just included in Discord. And you don't need any premium version - it's all free and without ads. I can recommend Discord for anyone.

Discord have what all the other popular chats have and that's make it so good imo.

You have channels/rooms like we had in IRC back in the days. Personally my favorite feature mainly from nostalgia.

You have group voice chat with different rooms like teamspeak.

You can chat 1on1 like on skype/messenger/etc.

The only thing it's missing is video chat.

Really, I do not know why it is popular. I have installed the desktop version and after a few days of using it, I realized that Telegram is much better for communicating and Slack is better to have a team communication related to the particular project or work process. That's why I have thought about how to remove Discord and have already deleted it. But, maybe it will be good to try to use it again. Maybe I have not fully tried all of its features and abilities.
