as I entered the crypto currencies and read about projects involved, i did not realized the fact that Ethereum is not the same as ETHER (ETH) and seems to me that most of people take these two as synonyms, although that is not the fact, so i will do a simple explanation for beginners
Ethereum is an implementation of blockchain with defined rules, it is the same as Bitcoin is another implementation of blockchain with defined rules, it is a broad meaning, and there could be many different instances of Ethereum blockchain implementation, these instances are defined by genesis block for each of those, and all blocks that are subsequent to this particular genesis block, while
ETHER (ETH) is a native token of Ethereum public mainnet instance, and as such can be used only on this instance, but there are also other instances - for example many testnets - Rinkeby, Kovan, Ropsten - which are public as well
as other example of instances, there are private Ethereum networks, such as Nightfall instance by Ernst and Young
so basically Ethereum is much broader term than ETH (ETHER) and one should bear that in mind when talking about about crypto currencies and digesting news regarding Ethereum blockchain implementation, that does not have necessarily to have influence on ETH crypto currency

simple explanation for beginners
Ethereum is the platform and Ether is the crypto-fuel or cryptocurrency that thrives over it. Ether is bought & sold and not Ethereum. Ethererum has various applications but Ether has only one application i.e. to enable operations on the blockchain. Source: coinsutra.com/ethereum-vs-etherI guess this is the simplest explanation about the difference between Ethereum and Ether...

Ethereum is an implementation of blockchain with defined rules, it is the same as Bitcoin is another implementation of blockchain with defined rules,
blockchain is simply a chain of blocks and you can refer to it as "the database". as a result you don't implement the database, you implement the protocol. Bitcoin is the implementation of a different set of protocol rules where as Ethereum is the implementation of another different set of protocol rules. now each cryptocurrency has something we refer to as "coins" which have the same name as the project. for example Bitcoin coins are called bitcoin, Litecoin coins litecoin and Ethereum coins Ether. of course in ethereum it is not a "coin" per se, it is a token and is used as fuel for smart contracts. but the concept is similar.

The confusion is because of big ecosystem of the ethereum network but i think there is no official use of ether ever, the token of ethereum network is usually abbreviated as Eth it is the short form or ticker used to trade ethereum so ether is false. The project is called Ethereum network and their coin/token is called Ethereum (ETH).

Mostly I use the term of ethereum and the ether , many people are using also that term because for me even that is different but we are still the same . Im still use this term because that's what I already use in the past few years ago that important now is the ethereum value is rising and that is we want to see what ever the term most people use to called ethereum is depends on them.
I ensure you that this confusion between the two terms was made by Coinmarketcap which list Eth token under the term Ethereum, while real Ethereum is the known virtual machine dedicated to create/manage smart-contracts. Almost all other platforms who listed Eth on their databases followed CMC. It's not a big issue tough, but it's necessary to clarify the difference.

Why getting confused for me it is the same, there's no need a complicated explanation because most investors seem don't care about its differences, the coin they are buying and holding is called Ethereum or Ether which had a ticker called ETH thats why its the same, the Ethereum Blockchain which is the network hosting the transaction of its coin called Ether or ETH and the cryptocurrency which is traded is called ETH, Ether or even Ethereum and it was the same cryptocurrency I think there is no problem with that, just forget the technicalities and make it simple. Ethereum, Ether, ETH it doesn't matter.

Whatever you call it does not make any big difference because mostly people use a short version of their choice that is easy for them to pronounce and remember. I have even seen other projects with different names and tickers that people use unofficially for their own convenience.

I used to call it ether as well at the start of my crypto journey and i still remember that some senior members corrected me that it is not ether rather it is simply eth so from then onwards i only use eth for it and since then eth is my biggest holding and i love to hold eth for longterm.

IMHO, this isn't a big deal. It's been widely known whether you get to say it ETH, Ether, or Ethereum you are pertaining to the cryptocurrency itself. But technically speaking on the side of developers or people who have deeper knowledge per se, they talk about the words or acronyms with the particular meaning. And as someone who invests, uses for different purposes like trading or paying stuff, what matters to it is that there's common understanding when you said any of those terms. CMC and other crypto trackers use ETH and Ethereum at the same time which portrays the crypto, not the blockchain implementation. We're used to using the acronyms though.

Actually its real termed is ether. But due to market trading and needed a short but notable ticker it was reduced to eth. Even if you noticed before most of the platform have been using the word ether then suddenly some have adopted to short it to eth as well. Actually it does not matter at all. Both are the same value since thus is only one coin for ethereum.
Is there a problem with abbreviation for that?

We should also mention the difference between coin and token. The coin is a native cryptocurrency of the parental blockchain, Bitcoin blockchain uses Bitcoin, Ethereum blockchain uses Ether, Cardano blockchain uses ADA. While the token is pretty different, it can be transferred through the blockchain, but you can´t pay the transaction fee with it.

in my opinion there is no difference, Ethereum is ETHER, and ETHER is Ethereum, why should it be differentiated? both names are already attached to Ethereum

Or it's simply the main native coin/cryptocurrency of the whole Ethereum Network. More like what fiat currency is to a Nation... with Ether being the "fiat currency" while Ethereum is the Nation.

is this legit ? ive been using the word ether and eth but with same meaning and im referring to etherium but if this is true that both are different , i will not be using the word ether anymore . so many users are also a victim of ether and they also think its the same meaning as etherium .
theres also a discussion on here before and that was btc where btc is also mistaken as blockchain although the terms are different but many people use them as one . when i was a newb i never mistaken them .

Your thread will make newbie in the crypto world confused. Everyone can call the coin as Ethereum, Ether or maybe ETH, and no problem with that because we all understand what he mentioned, please don't make it too formal that everyone has to say just Ether or just Ethereum.
It's just about name and I don't like a formalities, so for me both are same no difference

Basically we could just sum it up as "blockchain : ethereum , bitcoin : ether" and be done with it, I don't know why we need more words to describe it. However there is no confusion because people do call ether as ethereum too, the coin itself is called ethereum too, in many many places. There are really no problems at all calling the coin itself ethereum, nobody would fix you or correct you about it.
If you want to call it eth, call it eth, if you want to call it ether, call it ethere and if you want to call it ethereum just call it ethereum none of that would be wrong in peoples eyes even though some are more correct in technical sense. Dollar is called United States of America Dollar, because there is canadian dollar, there is australian dollar, there are other dollars as well, but when I tell you dollar you instantly think of american dollar (unless you are from a nation that uses dollar as well) so it is not a big deal.

Right, for average joe's there's not much a big deal, it just pertains to Ethereum which Vitalik built. Of course for technical people, they could talk in their jargon so differentiate between the two. It's good that the OP somewhat open the eyes of many crypto investors but it won't make a difference to them. They invest, make money, trade, that's it.

The best and simplest explanation I can offer is that, Ethereum is the blockchain while its coin or better still the coin of the Ethereum blockchain is represented by a ticker ETH. Just like Binance is represented by BNB, Stellar Lumens by XLM, Cardano by ADA, Bitcoin by BTC, hence i don't ever remember using Ether to mean ETH, neither have I seen people using it that way. So in every sense, each blockchain network or platform has a ticker which is used to represent the token or coin of the platform, and this ticker is ought to be unique so that there won't be confusion between two platforms.
