David Damesceno who runs a youtube channel with over 2 million subscribers, had his channel hacked and that channel was used for crypto giveaway scams.

It’s pertinent to note that the hackers used an old technique by sending him a video editing tool called Zenium Editor, and he downloaded it without doing any due diligence. Once the software was downloaded the malware inside the software infected his machine, and the hackers managed to take control of his channel.

Furthermore after running various fake giveaways, those hackers demanded $10k in ransom, but luckily he was able to get his account back without paying them.

The important lessons here are

1) Stop downloading software from random people.

2) Crypto lovers stop your greed and stop falling for free stuff, nothing is free in this world except for this advice that you’re reading.

3) If possible keep a separate machine where you store your bitcoin wallet, and operate your email address from a different machine.

4) Always try and download from official sites only, and if you can’t afford it save for it, and buy later on better to be safe then sorry.

5) Lastly and most repeated one use an antivirus for safety purposes, and use 2fa wherever you can.

Quote

ccording to a video published by David Damasceno, who runs Universo Curioso, cybercriminals took control of his account after receiving a contact request from an individual offering him a video editing tool.

The fake software was called Zenium Editor, which also handles advertising revenues, and when Damasceno downloaded and installed the app, the damage has been done. The malware was deployed, taking control of the channel

As dangerous as malware could be, they can still be avoided. We need to be careful, a single malware installation can lead to multiple malware installation. Even, there are trojans that can reveal 2fa, there are rootkits that can monitor monitors someone's activities on computers and reveal all to hackers which can be used for stealing information from the computer, there are bots that can be transformed into botnets which can be used in DDoS attack. Malware can work together to make hackers to completely accomplish their mission.

Thousands of people are losing their wallets yearly all because they did not make there device safe from malware installation. These are other few tips I can recommend in order to avoid malware attack

1. Say no to kyc, hackers have ways to easily identify people after data breaches.
2. Avoiding phishing email attack by not clicking on links on any email message that you do not authorize for.
3. Using pay Vpn.
4. Using paid antimalware, but still knowing prevention is better than cure.
5. Safe browsing and be careful always to always stay safe
6. Not visiting http sites, only https sites are secured, but that does not still mean the site does not contain malware links, only the connection to the site is secure, not the site itself.
7. Avoiding airdrops
8. Avoiding cloud mining sites.
9. Avoiding to click on ads, be it google ads or not google ads.
10. Always having your 2fa app on another device, not on your wallet device.
11. Downloading apps from the official source

There are still many other things to talk about, these are only few, malware can be avoided because it is the sites we are visiting or the app we are downloading that are leading to malware installation, never trust any site you do not know about.

I am tired of hacks. People ignore basic steps and are trapped by scammers. Being trapped by hacked accounts sounds like reduce their own faults. With such faults from being lazy, careless and don't want to change, they can be scammed anytime, by any account, on any platform.

Click on any link they see.
Download any files they are received.
Visit any sites they are invited.
Don't bookmark domains of important sites.... Many serious faults to list. They deserve hacks and losses, it is bitterly to say but it is.

That is unfortunate for him, maybe he has low security or outdated antivirus. If you download any suspicious app a decent antivirus should prompt like it's malicious program or similar even windows defender might detect it. Maybe he install it anyway believing it's a false positive.  I will add one important thing to your pointers.

6) Don't allow your kids to use your computer, phones. Kids nowadays are really into gadgets. They install random games and stuff from google and the possibility of it containing malicious file is really big which is risky for our important files.

The use of antivirus on the device is very important here. Because the role of antivirus will be needed so that malware that wants to infect can be held and detected by antivirus. Maybe when malware infects no security is used. It's terrible without security and downloading apps from obscure e-mails.
Today many similar methods are being used and are starting to hack YouTube channels with thousands to millions of subscribers.

this can be a lesson for all of us that all kinds of methods are used to do hacking. Do not carelessly open and download applications that we don't know, it's better to avoid them.

That's why we should always be vigilant because scammers and hackers are rampant in this space. We have already heard a lot of stories like this and it's their fault for being careless but for sure, it will serve as their lesson in the future.

It was not mentioned in the article if there are people or subscribers who fall with the fake giveaways uploaded in the channel but I hope there's none. Also, YouTube should give more attention to this kind of activity because fake giveaways are growing on this platform.

It is easier to scam a lot of users and steal money without effort because they believe everything. I don't know why some people still trust the simplest scam, like sending $ 100 and getting $ 200 or even downloading random image editing software, or some funny filters.
Also, I think it is better to think about the permissions that the apps get, even if they are reliable, you do not need to download them.

I believe since David Damesceno runs a YouTube channel, the scammers allured him using a fake video editor, he prolly wanted to make better videos for his subscribers, why I'm including this is because if you're popular for something on social media, Telegram for example, scammers may attack with a different method, using something they know you'll probably need, for your business, channel or group, just like in this case. Always verify and do not download anything from just anybody or Google playstore, always download through the official website.

Being careless and not concerned with security will have an adverse effect and can be self-defeating, as you mentioned about lazy people. They are great at creating content, great at reaching a large following, but they fail to secure their own privacy, secure their own accounts. this is a weakness exploited by hackers. Early education is needed about the importance of maintaining security, always being vigilant and not taking action carelessly.

I want to extend your suggestions. Don't download apps from unofficial websites. If you don't afford official version, usually there is many free alternatives, which is often open source.
If you have desktop wallet where you keep your BTC, be extremely careful on that devices. If you have significant amount of BTC, hardware wallet is must have thing IMO.
And offcourse, 2FA is must have thing. I'm shocked to see people putting a lot of time and efforts into their Youtube channels and then it lose it in easy way just because they didn't had even basic account protection.

Not really a common mistake as many of us knows how to avoid it but it was a common trick for hackers. I understand that because of a busy life he forgot to secure his account. Hackers have targeted those big names and have a good public reputation, and once successful, they make use of it scam to people hiding those names.

I know this didn't happen first but many still ignore it and let the things happen to them. That is why it is very important to know first whos sending you any files and must be very careful especially when it comes to downloading files from unknown sources. I believe that all computers have that virus security app that gives you a warning but sometimes we are bypassing it and allow it to continue. It was us who can be blamed first and we never think what's inside (a virus or anything related to)rather than being excited to know it how it runs after finish downloading.

I don't know if anyone here is experiencing it but there are series of apps (Watcho, Free new ringtone and a few others) that I don't know how but all of a sudden, they keep appearing in my device. I just don't know how. Even when I delete them, they keep coming back. As if they are automatically downloaded once I'm online for a long while. What could be the reason for this?

100s of youtube accounts are getting hacked every day and started streaming some random interviews of crypto-related members and added a banner related to the giveaway with the address. And the accounts are still hacked with the old phishing attacks and I wonder how he downloaded a random software in his main system where all his primary accounts related to youtube are logged in. Roll Eyes

Stop responding to the promotions from random persons because they are sent to the random mail address in mass numbers to execute these kinds of hacks.

I don't believe that all of scam giveaways on Youtube come from hacked accounts. There are a few types of accounts that run scam giveaways:
- Hacked accounts: Scammers hacked those accounts and use it to scam victims.
- Bought accounts: Scammers bought those accounts from account farmers and use it to scam victims.
- Real accounts from scammers: they create account, build its channel and use it to scam later when channel get enough followers.

Keep in mind any giveaways that require to send BTC or any crypto first and get backs a few more, double, tripple, x1.5 , blah blah are scam.

AFAIK, hackers uses the hacked accounts, they are not going to purchase an youtube account to run a scam giveaway because they need to spend a lot and they don't know whether people will fall for them or not.

And no Youtuber will do in such kind of activity because everyone knows their real identity and if they are scamming people then in a day or two they will be in jail.

Today, many ways are used by hackers to trap potential victims. Like this, by sending an application that has been hit by a virus, they can easily hack the YouTube channel with millions of subscribers. This is a lesson for us to be more careful when downloading something. make sure that it's official from the official website. This may have originated from his negligence, causing his YouTube channel to be hacked.

In this case, hopefully, he has other social media to continuously inform all people that his YouTube channel is hacked and we need to not believe the various scams offered on the YouTube channel.

And we, as viewers, must also be more careful in following all types of GA even though they come from well-known channels. do some research and make sure that the YouTube channel is safe. especially if GA is too tempting and also wants a deposit of some funds, it would be better to leave it.
