Greetings!
While there have been considerations about the possible cancellation of the event in 2020 due to the pandemic, it seems that BBC Sports Personality of the Year will probably be awarded.
Are you planning to bet on it? Betting is available on Sportsbet.io:
https://sportsbet.io/sports/event/specials/sports/bbc-sports-personality-2020/bbc-sports-personality-2020-5eef25090a476dd231e812f9.

Who do you think will win the award? It seems that Tyson Fury is the likeliest winner. He's been favorite for this award since February, and he's still holding the status. Would you call putting some mbtc on him a safe bet?

I don't think it is a safe bet, but yeah most probably, it's going to be Tyson Fury for his win by KO against Wilder, because I believe its a good career achievement. Lewis Hamilton also stands a good chance for winning the F1 race, but I dont think he would become bbc sportsperson of the year because he has been winning almost all of the F1 races since 2014. Last year, Ben Stokes won the title because of the Cricket WorldCup win, so I don't think there is any chance for Broad, Butler or Root to win it either. For Murray, we have to wait for the US open results. Rest of them, I don't even know which sport they represent correctly.

Do you know the criteria for choosing the BBC Sports Personality 2020?

Why Manny Pacquiao not in the list? I would put my bet on him regardless of the odds if he is part of it, and I'm just curious, what do you think is the reason why Fury is the heavy favorites?

Manny Pacquiao is not British so he is out of the list,  Wink

Quote
The BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award is the main award of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony, which takes place each December. The winner is the sportsperson, judged by a public vote, to have achieved the most that year. The recipient must either be British or reside and play a significant amount of their sport in the United Kingdom.

I think Fury's win over America's Wilder's will get my vote or, or least that's where I'm going to bet. And I think it has impacted British sports more than Marcus Rashford. And his comeback is really impressive, fought Wilder the first time in which he got up, and others may argue that he really won that fight. And then in the rematch, he outclassed Wilder (drop him twice) and won the title.

Just to add small info to Kemarit's answer. BBC is a British broadcasting media company. If there will be this kind of awarding managed by another company or organization and the entries could be from any nationality, we may see Manny Pacquiao included in it.
But for now, we should focus on the nominees specific to their own athletes.

From the list shown, it must Lewis Hamilton. I am not really a fan of him but he is without doubt a great athlete who can even become the greatest in Formula 1 this season. The other nominees didn't do nearly as great and the 2019 season was just perfect for him. It would be a disappointment if he would not win it.

There is also a good case for Lewis Hamilton, won his 6th titles, second place in all time list behind the great Schumacher. Of course he could have accomplished more this 2020 and move first in the all time list, but we all know that the pandemic affected a lot of sports. So it will be really a toss up between him and Tyson Fury. But I wouldn't be surprised Hamilton win this one.

The new season has started promisingly for him. I don't see any serious competition this year, which is why I expect him to overtake Schuhmachers record this year and become the biggest in the sport. As I said, I am not a fan of him but you have to acknowledge his achievements.

It is surprising to see that the odd to win of Ronnie O'Sullivan is quite low. He is the best snooker player in the world and recently won the World Championship for the 6th time, but I think his chances to win are quite low. The only snooker player to have ever won the BBC Sports Personality is Steve Davis. Even the great Stephen Hendry has never won it.

I am placing a bet on Fury to win the award.

BIG WINNER!

Damn, my bad, honestly, I know BBC is popular, I can see it on my TV channels but I didn't know its (BBC) meaning, haha..

Sorry guys, please just disregard my comments and question.

I am placing a bet on Fury to win the award.
Fury is clearly the the odds favorite to win and he could get it this year with his back to back wins against Wilder.

You'd have to wonder who half of these players are - do they play darts or snooker?  I know I'm on the other side of the world, but I agree with @Natalim that there's quite a few names missing (I'd've said Jeff Horn myself) - Scratching for names they must have gone for motorcycle riders to entice the Top Gear team back.

I think it should be Hamilton.Even though he has won it last year or in previous years as I don’t recall correctly now he deserves to win it.He has showed consistency in the sport he is part of the F1 and he has only proved that he has won consistently with the two teams that he has raced so far,Mclaren and Mercedes.

I do understand one thing here though : the odds are really low , If we do calculate the probability here .

There are 30 people , only one would get the prize.

Therefore the probability will be 1/30

The percentage would be : 3.33%

Now if I do place the bets it would not really be in our favour. Therefore I do believe am going to skip it since no one can actually perceive what's going on in the mind of judges.

what do you think is the reason why Fury is the heavy favorites?

I have seen last time the highlights of the Fight between Fury and Wilder, despite Fury has some arrogant attitude, he still gain some huge popularity in their country. for them, He is some kind of a hero. You can see the way the crowds are cheering for him Fury is like Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines. whenever he is fighting in the ring, the criminal rate is greatly subsided until his match is over.

Lol.  I got Marcus Rashford at a bad line at 2.73 or something.  And Tyson Fury was around 1.85ish that time.

Anway I put some action on Rash during the height of the BLM thing going on.  Grin  Thought he'd win since he was kinda vocal about it a couple of months ago.

There are a very few sports going on in 2020. I think the most active player and the definite winner in his game is Lewis Hamilton. He is nominated for last two years but haven't won for some years now and there's not much ring action for Tyson Fury in 2020. Not much good action from football and cricket players from UK. Or it could also be some new players from some other sports I'm not aware of.

Why is the favorite someone I do not even know haha,,, anyway I think we should look at a surprise winner this year but it is hard to see Lewis Hamilton not win it IMO,,, not because I personally think he is a great guy but because I actually believe they will select people based on performance still more than personality.

I haven't been following much sports since the start of 2020 but my interest has been piqued by motosports (again) due to the 2020 F1 World Championship. I kinda wanna see Hamilton win this award for this year although that will be a little bit too biased since I only watch F1. Tyson Fury is also one in my books due to his bout recently against Deontay Wilder. These two showed great deal of professionalism in their craft for me, and if I were to pick a champ--even if it's too biased on my liking lol--it's just between the two of them.

Like you Dothebeats I have the same experience, this year I didn't follow sport events as I did before. From all the pressure around
I put sport events on a side, and I was focused on other things.
I see many well-known names on this list, but I don't know about their performance in the past 9 months. Any of my picks would be
just guessing based on their results in the past. I will pass this, but if someone from here is sure in the outcome I would dare to follow,
after all we are BitcoinTalk community, we should help each other with good and profitable tips!

Always been part on making up bets which you wont consider it out if you dont like them. lol. Just like yours i do consider Fury and Hamilton not just they are heavily favorites but im aware on the sports they are into.
not just making out bets that you didnt even know on what sports theyre belong into.

Do you know the criteria for choosing the BBC Sports Personality 2020?

Why Manny Pacquiao not in the list? I would put my bet on him regardless of the odds if he is part of it, and I'm just curious, what do you think is the reason why Fury is the heavy favorites?
Just to add small info to Kemarit's answer. BBC is a British broadcasting media company. If there will be this kind of awarding managed by another company or organization and the entries could be from any nationality, we may see Manny Pacquiao included in it.
But for now, we should focus on the nominees specific to their own athletes.

Damn, my bad, honestly, I know BBC is popular, I can see it on my TV channels but I didn't know its (BBC) meaning, haha..

Sorry guys, please just disregard my comments and question.
No worries, mate. It's like the niche of the awarding is mainly focused to their natives.

Why is the favorite someone I do not even know haha,,, anyway I think we should look at a surprise winner this year but it is hard to see Lewis Hamilton not win it IMO,,, not because I personally think he is a great guy but because I actually believe they will select people based on performance still more than personality.
It is because they are all British and if you're not from that country, you're not familiar with them. From the past awarding, the criteria for the winner was based mostly on the people's vote and for the nominees, you're right there's certain criteria like what you have mentioned. I don't know if it's still the same for this year.

It is because they are all British and if you're not from that country, you're not familiar with them.

I'm sure none of us meant any disrespect of the players themselves given they are the elite in their chosen fields, it's just rather than instantly knowing who they are we are inquiring as to who these people are.  II don't doubt most of us will look up some or all of these competitors - after all, they may be worth placing a bet or two on if the are at the top of their game.

I do respect all of the athletes regardless of their nationalities. I know and understand the struggle that they have to go through with their trainings, diets and discipline with their preparation before a competition or match comes.
It is exciting to bet for this kind of event if you're following any of them. And if you haven't followed any of them, it's time to do some research if not to all of them, at least go with any random choice of yours or anyone based from your will.

I will stick like glue on/with Marcus Rashford, 2020 was a blighted year of football and sport, so in a year as this one character/action of the field/ring/track and sport main stage should be used, Marcus was exemplary not just by speaking also in doing -it earned him a degree- I think Rashford should winning to show sportsman is not about what you do in your office of specialty but off it.

I think snooker is not the popular though, and although Ronnie O'Sullivan is really that good, I don't think he reach so much influence as let's say compare to Fury right now or Lewis Hamilton.

I am placing a bet on Fury to win the award.
Fury is clearly the the odds favorite to win and he could get it this year with his back to back wins against Wilder.

Fully agreed. I think that snooker is quite popular in the UK (and China), but not really in the rest of the world. Sports like boxing, soccer and formula 1 gain much more attention worldwide.
But popularity of the sport should not really play a role to become the Sports Personality, it should always be based on performance.

BIG WINNER!

Who do you think will win the award? It seems that Tyson Fury is the likeliest winner. He's been favorite for this award since February, and he's still holding the status. Would you call putting some mbtc on him a safe bet?
If it is a fair selection then Tyson Fury should get the BCC sports personality of the year as he returned after a long hiatus after struggling with mental issues and substance abuse and then return and defeated Wilder who many considered to be one of the heaviest puncher of all time and to defeat him in a dominating fashion and bring eyes back to boxing Tyson Fury should get that honors.

Fury would be an excellent choice. But normally the jury have a tendency to overlook the boxers. Ever since the award was introduced in 1954, only five times it has gone to the boxers. Last winner was Joe Calzaghe of Wales, who won the award in 2007. But I am not sure whether he is eligible for the award or not. Although he was born in Manchester, in international competitions he represents the Republic of Ireland. Anyway, since the odds are favoring him I don't think this is a big issue.

If I would bet on it, I would pick Lewis Hamilton. He simply dominate in F1 and going to beat Schumacher most wins record soon. Also, there is popular phrase - don't mix sports and politics. But I think that his involvement in BLM movement may play important thing in voting.
Personally, I would pick Ronnie O'Sullivan. He is greatest snooker player for so long, he won another World Championship this year, so, he fully deserved to finally get this award.
Also, don't know what Rashord significant did 2020 that he  is one of favorites.

Rashford made some pressure for kids to get free school meals or something so if he wins it then it’ll be a vote for him being a great person rather than what he did on the pitch.

I think Fury should win it, he overcame depression, mental health issues & fitness issues to become World Champion.

Every well-known and well-earning athlete now does this, many also to just improve their image. Even Christiano Ronaldo donated millions to children and charity organizations [1]. That is definitely no reason to have a better chance of winning such an award. It should only be about the athletic performance and from the looks of it Lewis Hamiliton won rightfully.

Odds are still favoring Tyson Fury. Right now, he is at 1.93. The only other boxer in the list is Anthony Joshua (21.00). Joshua's odds are not that good, but who knows? After all this year is characterized by the BLM movement and we may end up having someone from the black community as the winner. How can the BBC, widely regarded as the kings of political correctness go against it?

Not everyone, and many of them do it because of their advisors and their publicists tell them to do it for good media relations. As the ESPN post feels to me just proves.

As much as I don't like United, Rashford's case is very different. He did it himself on his own, and he knows what it meant because HE was part of the system that ate the same free food when he was growing up.

So yes, if he wins it because of this, he has my support.

It will be wrong to claim that they are doing this charity work just for some cheap publicity. Even if that is the case, why we should complain about it?  In the end, the money is going to those who need it the most. What's the issue if Ronaldo or Rashford gets some publicity out of it. But I agree that these things should not be considered for awards and prizes. It should be solely based on the performance on field, and not off the field.

very likely that Tyson Fury will be the winner this time. even at odds 1.93, you can still get a lil bit of money if he really does win. if he will win, the boxing community will celebrate!
a lot of money will go into this event! now, you will think that we are not in crisis because  huge amount of money are still pouring in the betting business!

That could be true. But who knows, as they say we should expect the unexpected. I guess we can assume that a lot of money will be generated from this event as there are a lot of spectators. Amidst this pandemic it is a fact that betting business did not sleep maybe because it is one of the activity that most people do on their homes.

Hey everyone! I'm writing an update on the odds. As you can see, the situation changed drastically over these almost two months! Tyson Fury moved from the leader to #3, and the likeliest winner is now Marcus Rashford who used to be #4.

The award is still months away, so I guess serious changes can still happen with a favorite candidate losing his appeal and someone else gaining it. It seems that tokeweed and BIT-BENDER were right that Rashford deserves more attention. Do you think he'll remain #1?

It's me again with an update about BBC Sports Personality 2020. The last time I posted, Marcus Rashford was the favorite, closely followed by Hamilton. However, new info suggests that he won't be in the short list and would instead get another BBC award for his work. The reason for this is that the Sports Personality award is first and foremost about sports, whereas he's more famous for other achievements (charity). More info is available here and here. As you can see, it's no longer possible to bet on him on Sportsbet, and Hamilton is way more likely to win than others (according to the odds, at least):

Lewis Hamilton remains the favorite now. Meanwhile, Tyson Fury has rejected his nomination for the award, saying that he doesn't wish to be in the short list. He requested BBC to take him off the list (which was rejected by the broadcaster). BTW, the voting has also opened for the BBC World Sport Star 2020 award, with Lebron James and Armand Duplantis being the favorites.

Lewis hamilton has been on that top list but denied the award every year and I guess this is his year. There are very few of other sports that went on this year and hamilton had been number one for a long time and after wining the Bahrain Grand Prix and missing some due to coronavirus, he would also have some sympathy. It would solid if he came to win another grand prix after covid and before the sports personality is decided.

Well, now it makes more sense. With all respect to Rashorfd, in 2020 he haven't made something very significant to become sports personality of year.
While Hamilton have great season, he won his 7th World Champion title and reached Shumacher by number of titles. Also, he overtake him by number of races won.
These who made bets on Hamilton earlier should make some nice profit.

The odds are very much in his favor, and the other players are far behind. It is unfortunate that he tested positive for COVID 19, which probably means that he needs to pull out of the Abu Dhabi GP. Anyway congratulations for winning the Bahrain Grand Prix last week. Apart from Hamilton, Ronnie OSullivan and Jordan Henderson are also in the race, but their odds are not that favorable.

Knowing that UK is known for their love of football, I would say it will be Jordan Henderson or cricketer Stuart Broad as my second best. Too bad, Tyson has to drop out, his story is something that evokes emotions.

Knowing that UK is known for their love of football, I would say it will be Jordan Henderson or cricketer Stuart Broad as my second best. Too bad, Tyson has to drop out, his story is something that evokes emotions.

So I read some articles why he rejected being included in the list and he's reason is simple, he doesn't need validation, he's already the people's champion. That's what he feels in this award.

https://www.boxingnews24.com/2020/12/tyson-fury-rejects-bbc-2020-sports-personality-of-the-year-award-competition/

Anyway, he is still included in the odds of sportsbet -

Thanks for an update on Tyson Fury, guys! While he doesn't want to be on the list, BBC said a week ago that he's going to remain there, and I don't see updates since then about other decisions, so I think it's understandable that betting on him is still an option.
I'd be very surprised if he doesn't win now, although I remember losing a multi bet on him, so I'm holding a small grudge and thus won't bet on him Grin
How about the closest runner-ups right now? Anyone who could actually beat him here? Anyone who deserves the award more in your opinion?

Chances are quite high that Hamilton will win, but there is no value anymore by placing a bet on him now. As a snooker fan and a fan of Ronnie O'Sullivan it would be nice that he would win and he also deserves it. He is the best player of all time, won more tournaments than anyone else, made more 147's and centuries than anyone and became world champion for a 6th time this year.

Given the lop-sided odds, it makes no sense to make a bet on Lewis Hamilton now. It may have made sense a few weeks ago, when his odds were >1.50. I still believe that there is still a fair chance that Ronnie O'Sullivan may win the award, but I am not that excited about Jordan Henderson or anyone else. I don't think that Stuart Broad has much of a chance, since last year the award was given to another cricketer (Ben Stokes). O'Sullivan deserves the award, but let's see how it goes.

I have followed Tyson since his comeback and his comeback made a big noise not only in the boxing scene but also in the world sports scenes he made a comeback by beating Wilder whom many thought to be an invincible fighter in the ring, he made headlines and made the British people very proud of him, so I believe he is going to take home the award for this year good motivation for him for his up coming fight.

Actually, it's not a good motivation for him, since he said he didn't even want to be on the list. He claimed he already has the love of the people, so he doesn't need recognition by BBC, even going as far as asking the fans not to vote for him. I wonder why he seems so anti-BBC, what could lead to this. It's not often that people say they don't even want to be considered for an award, right?
Moreover, what's the upcoming fight you're talking about? I believe he said he'll be back in 2021, and won't be fighting before then.

Hamilton should be a rock-solid favourite. And his chances will of course be increased by the fact that a lot of major sporting events were cancelled in 2020, no Olympics, no Euro 2020, etc.

Regardless of these, he should be favourite anyway for this year becoming statistically the greatest ever in his sport. But he has suffered here in the past, winning 6 world titles before but only 1 sports personality win... so it's by no means a definite. There is also some establishment backlash against the BLM movement, in which Hamilton has been a prominent figure, so this could also count against him.

I don't know who you're referring to as getting angry with the BLM movement, but I don't think that the BBC is among them. The BBC is tricky to figure out because I read that the left-wing media accuse it of being right-wing, but conservatives say it has left-wing liberal bias. I think it's close to the center, so there's no reason for them to be against the BLM movement. That being said, I don't think any elites within the BBC or elsewhere matter in this situation because it's the public vote that determines the winner of the award, right?
I do agree with you that it's not a fact that Hamilton will win, though.
