I haven't been following much sports since the start of 2020 but my interest has been piqued by motosports (again) due to the 2020 F1 World Championship. I kinda wanna see Hamilton win this award for this year although that will be a little bit too biased since I only watch F1. Tyson Fury is also one in my books due to his bout recently against Deontay Wilder. These two showed great deal of professionalism in their craft for me, and if I were to pick a champ--even if it's too biased on my liking lol--it's just between the two of them.
Always been part on making up bets which you wont consider it out if you dont like them. lol. Just like yours i do consider Fury and Hamilton not just they are heavily favorites but im aware on the sports they are into.
not just making out bets that you didnt even know on what sports theyre belong into.

Do you know the criteria for choosing the BBC Sports Personality 2020?

Why Manny Pacquiao not in the list? I would put my bet on him regardless of the odds if he is part of it, and I'm just curious, what do you think is the reason why Fury is the heavy favorites?
Just to add small info to Kemarit's answer. BBC is a British broadcasting media company. If there will be this kind of awarding managed by another company or organization and the entries could be from any nationality, we may see Manny Pacquiao included in it.
But for now, we should focus on the nominees specific to their own athletes.

Damn, my bad, honestly, I know BBC is popular, I can see it on my TV channels but I didn't know its (BBC) meaning, haha..

Sorry guys, please just disregard my comments and question.
No worries, mate. It's like the niche of the awarding is mainly focused to their natives.

Why is the favorite someone I do not even know haha,,, anyway I think we should look at a surprise winner this year but it is hard to see Lewis Hamilton not win it IMO,,, not because I personally think he is a great guy but because I actually believe they will select people based on performance still more than personality.
It is because they are all British and if you're not from that country, you're not familiar with them. From the past awarding, the criteria for the winner was based mostly on the people's vote and for the nominees, you're right there's certain criteria like what you have mentioned. I don't know if it's still the same for this year.

It is because they are all British and if you're not from that country, you're not familiar with them.

I'm sure none of us meant any disrespect of the players themselves given they are the elite in their chosen fields, it's just rather than instantly knowing who they are we are inquiring as to who these people are.  II don't doubt most of us will look up some or all of these competitors - after all, they may be worth placing a bet or two on if the are at the top of their game.

I do respect all of the athletes regardless of their nationalities. I know and understand the struggle that they have to go through with their trainings, diets and discipline with their preparation before a competition or match comes.
It is exciting to bet for this kind of event if you're following any of them. And if you haven't followed any of them, it's time to do some research if not to all of them, at least go with any random choice of yours or anyone based from your will.

I will stick like glue on/with Marcus Rashford, 2020 was a blighted year of football and sport, so in a year as this one character/action of the field/ring/track and sport main stage should be used, Marcus was exemplary not just by speaking also in doing -it earned him a degree- I think Rashford should winning to show sportsman is not about what you do in your office of specialty but off it.

It is surprising to see that the odd to win of Ronnie O'Sullivan is quite low. He is the best snooker player in the world and recently won the World Championship for the 6th time, but I think his chances to win are quite low. The only snooker player to have ever won the BBC Sports Personality is Steve Davis. Even the great Stephen Hendry has never won it.
I think snooker is not the popular though, and although Ronnie O'Sullivan is really that good, I don't think he reach so much influence as let's say compare to Fury right now or Lewis Hamilton.

I am placing a bet on Fury to win the award.
Fury is clearly the the odds favorite to win and he could get it this year with his back to back wins against Wilder.

Fully agreed. I think that snooker is quite popular in the UK (and China), but not really in the rest of the world. Sports like boxing, soccer and formula 1 gain much more attention worldwide.
But popularity of the sport should not really play a role to become the Sports Personality, it should always be based on performance.

BIG WINNER!

Who do you think will win the award? It seems that Tyson Fury is the likeliest winner. He's been favorite for this award since February, and he's still holding the status. Would you call putting some mbtc on him a safe bet?
If it is a fair selection then Tyson Fury should get the BCC sports personality of the year as he returned after a long hiatus after struggling with mental issues and substance abuse and then return and defeated Wilder who many considered to be one of the heaviest puncher of all time and to defeat him in a dominating fashion and bring eyes back to boxing Tyson Fury should get that honors.

Fury would be an excellent choice. But normally the jury have a tendency to overlook the boxers. Ever since the award was introduced in 1954, only five times it has gone to the boxers. Last winner was Joe Calzaghe of Wales, who won the award in 2007. But I am not sure whether he is eligible for the award or not. Although he was born in Manchester, in international competitions he represents the Republic of Ireland. Anyway, since the odds are favoring him I don't think this is a big issue.

If I would bet on it, I would pick Lewis Hamilton. He simply dominate in F1 and going to beat Schumacher most wins record soon. Also, there is popular phrase - don't mix sports and politics. But I think that his involvement in BLM movement may play important thing in voting.
Personally, I would pick Ronnie O'Sullivan. He is greatest snooker player for so long, he won another World Championship this year, so, he fully deserved to finally get this award.
Also, don't know what Rashord significant did 2020 that he  is one of favorites.

Rashford made some pressure for kids to get free school meals or something so if he wins it then it’ll be a vote for him being a great person rather than what he did on the pitch.

I think Fury should win it, he overcame depression, mental health issues & fitness issues to become World Champion.

Every well-known and well-earning athlete now does this, many also to just improve their image. Even Christiano Ronaldo donated millions to children and charity organizations [1]. That is definitely no reason to have a better chance of winning such an award. It should only be about the athletic performance and from the looks of it Lewis Hamiliton won rightfully.

Odds are still favoring Tyson Fury. Right now, he is at 1.93. The only other boxer in the list is Anthony Joshua (21.00). Joshua's odds are not that good, but who knows? After all this year is characterized by the BLM movement and we may end up having someone from the black community as the winner. How can the BBC, widely regarded as the kings of political correctness go against it?

Not everyone, and many of them do it because of their advisors and their publicists tell them to do it for good media relations. As the ESPN post feels to me just proves.

As much as I don't like United, Rashford's case is very different. He did it himself on his own, and he knows what it meant because HE was part of the system that ate the same free food when he was growing up.

So yes, if he wins it because of this, he has my support.

It will be wrong to claim that they are doing this charity work just for some cheap publicity. Even if that is the case, why we should complain about it?  In the end, the money is going to those who need it the most. What's the issue if Ronaldo or Rashford gets some publicity out of it. But I agree that these things should not be considered for awards and prizes. It should be solely based on the performance on field, and not off the field.

very likely that Tyson Fury will be the winner this time. even at odds 1.93, you can still get a lil bit of money if he really does win. if he will win, the boxing community will celebrate!
a lot of money will go into this event! now, you will think that we are not in crisis because  huge amount of money are still pouring in the betting business!

How can the BBC, widely regarded as the kings of political correctness go against it?

very likely that Tyson Fury will be the winner this time. even at odds 1.93, you can still get a lil bit of money if he really does win. if he will win, the boxing community will celebrate!
a lot of money will go into this event! now, you will think that we are not in crisis because  huge amount of money are still pouring in the betting business!
That could be true. But who knows, as they say we should expect the unexpected. I guess we can assume that a lot of money will be generated from this event as there are a lot of spectators. Amidst this pandemic it is a fact that betting business did not sleep maybe because it is one of the activity that most people do on their homes.

Hey everyone! I'm writing an update on the odds. As you can see, the situation changed drastically over these almost two months! Tyson Fury moved from the leader to #3, and the likeliest winner is now Marcus Rashford who used to be #4.

The award is still months away, so I guess serious changes can still happen with a favorite candidate losing his appeal and someone else gaining it. It seems that tokeweed and BIT-BENDER were right that Rashford deserves more attention. Do you think he'll remain #1?

It's me again with an update about BBC Sports Personality 2020. The last time I posted, Marcus Rashford was the favorite, closely followed by Hamilton. However, new info suggests that he won't be in the short list and would instead get another BBC award for his work. The reason for this is that the Sports Personality award is first and foremost about sports, whereas he's more famous for other achievements (charity). More info is available here and here. As you can see, it's no longer possible to bet on him on Sportsbet, and Hamilton is way more likely to win than others (according to the odds, at least):

Lewis Hamilton remains the favorite now. Meanwhile, Tyson Fury has rejected his nomination for the award, saying that he doesn't wish to be in the short list. He requested BBC to take him off the list (which was rejected by the broadcaster). BTW, the voting has also opened for the BBC World Sport Star 2020 award, with Lebron James and Armand Duplantis being the favorites.

Lewis hamilton has been on that top list but denied the award every year and I guess this is his year. There are very few of other sports that went on this year and hamilton had been number one for a long time and after wining the Bahrain Grand Prix and missing some due to coronavirus, he would also have some sympathy. It would solid if he came to win another grand prix after covid and before the sports personality is decided.
