I have just added a Ledger to my setup.
Is it possible to change an existing electrum wallet to include this hardware?
Or do I have to create a new wallet and then transfer over the network?
I would like to avoid the (currently) high fees involved in sending between addresses, if possible.

I have also noticed that since updating, the app is a little unstable.
It has crashed once.
Also the Max button in Send is not doing anything, and copy address is not working.
I checked with a text document, and even though it says "text copied to clipboard" nothing is copied.

Additionally I would suggest that the UI for Send is a little confusing.
Having the section for fees after clicking Send is non-intuitive. Users may think clicking send would initiate the transaction, rather than leading to further options.

Ok thanks.

The Max button is definitely not working for me.
I tried adding an amount of mBTC first and that makes no difference.

Also the copy and paste address functionality is not working at all between wallets.

If you are not in a hurry, then you don't need to pay those fees. Just send at 1 sat/vbyte and be prepared to wait.

The Max button is definitely not working for me.
There must be a valid address in the "Pay to" box before the "Max" button will work.

Also the copy and paste address functionality is not working at all between wallets.
Very strange. Does it work within a single wallet? If you hit copy on an address from the "Addresses" tab, can you paste it in to the "Pay to" box on the "Send" tab? Is your clipboard working normally for other programs?

And just to ask the obvious... did you verify the wallet download before attempting to use the wallet? Huh

The Max button is definitely not working for me.
Is the Max button actually "enabled"? or is it greyed out? Huh As o_e_l_e_o said, until you add at least one "payto" address, the button will not be enabled.

I concur with o_e_l_e_o... I've not seen that behaviour exhibited before... where/how exactly are you attempting to copy the address? Using the Right Click/Copy->Address option from the "Addresses" tab? or from somewhere else? Huh

If you are not in a hurry, then you don't need to pay those fees. Just send at 1 sat/vbyte and be prepared to wait.

I see this option was kind of hidden. If it's set too low doesn't the transaction risk getting rejected or lost in the backlog?

The Max button is definitely not working for me.
There must be a valid address in the "Pay to" box before the "Max" button will work.

Ah ok that makes sense.
It also was not obvious the request (B) button had to be pressed to populate the address area.
I'm probably a bit dyslexic with UI, and this one is very unintuitive!

Also the copy and paste address functionality is not working at all between wallets.
Very strange. Does it work within a single wallet? If you hit copy on an address from the "Addresses" tab, can you paste it in to the "Pay to" box on the "Send" tab? Is your clipboard working normally for other programs?

This GUI is so confusing here. I now have an outgoing payment that appears, and has been 'pending' for about 12 hours.
I set the rate to about 20 sat/vbyte
Does this mean the payment is still queued and / or the network is congested?
What happens when the receiving wallet time window expires in another 12 hours?

I did not verify the download as suggested in that link, but I always go directly to electrum.org and download from there.
I know about the popup scam and would avoid Github for this too.

The worst thing that would happen is that after two weeks of being unconfirmed (if the mempool did not drop down to 1 sat/vbyte in this time, which is fairly unlikely), your transaction would simply be dropped from the mempool. Your coins would still be in your wallet and you could simply rebroadcast the same transaction or make a new one with a higher fee. If you are worried about your coins being stuck in limbo during this time, then mark your transaction opt in for RBF, and that means you can always boost the fee at a later date if you suddenly need your transaction to confirm quickly.

I set the rate to about 20 sat/vbyte
This should have been long confirmed by now. Is the "pending" transaction on the "History" tab or on the "Send" tab? The history tab is kept up to date with the blockchain. The send tab is simply an internal record of the Electrum software, and may not be entirely accurate.

~snip~
Can you post the system specs of your Mac? and what version?

I heard that Electrum doesn't work properly on the old version of macOS.

So if you have an older version of macOS you should upgrade it to the latest version after that it should be fixed your issue

About your transaction 20sat/byte it's too low compared to the suggested transaction fee from https://bitcoinfees.earn.com/ which is 136 satoshis/byte so the transaction is slow but you can increase the miner's fee as what other said above.

bitcoinfees.earn is a terrible site to use to suggest fees, and this is a perfect example why. 137 sats/vbyte currently puts you with 0.01 MB of the tip of the mempool. Such a fee is maybe warranted if you absolutely must get confirmed in the next block, but for the vast majority of people this is completely unnecessary. A fee of only 5 sats/vbyte will still put you within 0.1 MB of the tip, and is still highly likely to get your transaction confirmed in the next block, and a fee of 3 sats/vbyte will put you 1 MB from the tip and get you confirmed with 2 or 3 blocks. 137 sats/vbyte is a gross over payment in almost all scenarios. A much better fee estimator can be found here: https://mempool.space/

The mempool is currently clearing down to the 1-3 sats/vbyte range, and transactions with fees of 20 sats/vbyte have been confirming in the next block for the last 20 hours or so. OPs transaction should be long confirmed by now.

Thanks, I took your advice. This makes me feel much better about the fees and general use case for BTC!
I considered the Lighting option, but it appears that is very much bleeding edge right now. 5 sats/vbyte is very reasonable

Definitely.
You should only use the lightning with funds you are prepared to lose. It is not even out of alpha right now.
Only recommended for testing / playing around.

And a 5 sat/vB fee will mostly get your TX confirmed in a reasonable timeframe. Even when the mempool heavily spikes, it usually will get confirmed within a few days at max.

-snip- the app is a little unstable.
It has crashed once. -snip-
Currently, there is a new release of Electrum-4.0.3 (https://download.electrum.org/4.0.3/)
maybe the problems that you found in the previous version are resolved in this release. I am also a Mac user, but the operating system I use is still version 10.11.6 (El Capitan), so I can't try it because I have to upgrade it first.

Note: always download from the official site and verify the GPG signatures.
