European crypto exchange ETERBASE hacked, lost more than $5 million from its 'hot' wallets

Little-known European crypto exchange ETERBASE suffered a hack Monday night and lost several cryptocurrencies from its “hot” wallets.

Announcing the news on Tuesday, ETERBASE said six of its addresses, tied to bitcoin (BTC), ether (ETH)/ ERC-20 tokens, XRP, Tron (TRX), Tezos (XTZ), and Algorand (ALGO), have been compromised. The exchange did not reveal the amount lost during the hack, but it is more than $5 million, according to The Block Research.

The ETH/ ERC-20 tokens address lost the most funds, around $3.9 million, followed by the XTZ address, losing about $471,000.

ETERBASE said it has contacted “all centralized exchanges that might be receiving these illicit funds.” In the meantime, the exchange is in maintenance mode.

After the publication of this story, ETERBASE told The Block that it has reported the hack to law enforcement. "We want to assure our clients that we are taking all necessary steps to ensure that the amount of their deposit does not suffer any damage as a result of a hacker attack."

Weird that I see people complaining about markets getting crashed on uniswap for some tokens after the hack, wonder if they were one of the main exchange for some of those tokens, normally a small exchange hack won't be able to do such thing.

But, this is a bit weird, they got hacked one week after their token went up by 20x times, talk about timing...

"We want to assure our clients that we are taking all necessary steps to ensure that the amount of their deposit does not suffer any damage as a result of a hacker attack."

How many times I've heard that, for a small exchange with 5 million lost probably they are asking themselves right now, do we pay or be go bankrupt?

Btw, this probably should be moved to Exchanges

It is very sad to see that Eterbase was hacked. They are not a very big crypto exchange. I wonder how they are going to handle this huge problem. We are talking about 5 million dollars. I think hard days are waiting for them and they need to decide what to do quickly. If they don't pay their investors, then they will probably lose them. If they decide to pay, then there is a possibility they could go bankrupt.

This is really sad news because when this exchange launches I was also invested some but this was not big and I sell these tokens but this is very serious problem now for many exchanges so they have to manage things for security otherwise this is going to hurt investors confidence and all crypto community very badly in future.

I am always skeptical with those small exchanges that claim hacks. The exchange has been over the month control the withdrawal of users fund for no reason. Investors at ICO have no profit till now and several complains and delay in development. Some of this developers need to be jail or seriously prosecuted for the controversial claim. I dont believe the hack and I think exchanges should have learnt there lesson from binance and know how to store the coin in sections to prevent a great loss.

Go bankcrupt. Its the easy way than continue the operation while they are not getting clients and the tokens on their exchange are diminishing every day because users are getting out due to the aspect of XBASE. Its been done before and it can be done again. A small underperforming exchange has no chance to it better be dead.

There is no better time to do it than on the pump days. Of course, why not make it worth.
