These are completely different theories, if the first one is correct then you need to manage the heat first or else you will face the same issue again, I am not familiar with Avalon miners, but almost everyone in this forum says they are robust, which means they should have some sort of heat-protection and not allow the miner to get hot enough to melt the miner's components.
So my guess is that the second theory is more likely and this is just a manufacturing defect due to inadequate quality control, which sadly you have to fix since you can't send the miner back (a problem which I face as well due to the shipping cost and other complications).
I believe he only needs the soldering iron, the heatgun has no use in this fix and it probably costs a lot more than the soldering iron.
Anyway, I would advise against him trying to fix it if he has no previous experience in soldering, it may seem like an easy job but it isn't.
