This is expected, i mean scammers are known to feed on trending topics or hyped projects ,whatever you choose to call it .
they know that when many people talk about a particular topic or project, this gets the attention of new set of people into the space, and this new set of people who are yet to understand what really is going on are mostly the ones who fall into this kind of trap, this ones are the ones they target in the first place.

The quest for free tokens as you pointed out is a perfect bait for the newbies. Few will listen to warnings about free tokens as grounds for scams.

But even if you are a newbie, once a site is asking for your private keys, you should at least think twice if the site is really authentic. You should check if the site is legit or not. Because remember, even when you are accessing your eth wallet, for example in MEW, you always check if you are in the right site. So should be the same thing also here, even if it is airdrop. Don't be so greedy as it will lead you to losses of your funds.
