I have used mycelium for a long time, I used to really like it, more and more I think it's crap.
I am looking into electrum for long term storage but would be interested to hear any other recommendations for mobile wallets, preferably ones that let YOU hold the private keys and don't rely on any 3rd parties to function...

What happened was, I deposited approx. $400 into my mycelium wallet,
I saw it arrive and confirm.
Then I sent out $145, again this arrived and confirmed.
But then when I sent $500 back to my mycelium wallet, the change or remainder from the the original $400 deposit disappeared. (approx $200 just gone)

I have reloaded the account multiple times. I have even restored the account using the seed words on a separate device, (android phone) nothing.

What is strange is that, now when I look back at transactions, the initial $400 deposit shows up in the history, but the sending out of the $145 does not.

If anyone has any insight into this issue it would be appreciated. I can see the change wallet where the ~$200 ended up. It's still there. I am using mycelium on an android device. I only used a QR code to send out that initial withdrawal of $145.

EDIT: I don't know if it's pertinent but I should add that I can see in the transaction history all the recent deposits and withdrawals and my balance does not add up. This all occurred a number of hours ago and I pay high transaction fees on mycelium so all transactions have been confirmed.

Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

Do you have any relevant transaction Ids for us to look sy. Also which mycelium are you using, android abs apple are pretty different?.

Depending on your phone and for how long you want to store it, you light want to look into getting a trezor if it's an android and is able to charge from it's usbc charging port (I think the ledger nano X also has similar functionality via Bluetooth). I'd remommend these probably is you're storing more than around 0.2BTC. If less, electrum should do fine just make sure you write down the 12 words and keep that safe.

Seems like a syncing and derivation path issue. Have you tried to import your private keys/ recovery seed on other wallet like electrum and check if still the same?

I am using mycelium android version 3.5.4.2 when I click "check for update" within the app it says it is up to date, also no update pending when checking the store.

Here you can see where it went wrong.
https://www.blockchain.com/btc/address/1LqRNgPKezbqLoGMMLVPv6tKVrcG88Fe23
looking at this wallet, you can see my withdrawal from that address of approx $150, which as I said confirmed and showed up just fine where it was supposed to.
but then, the remaining funds, the change get sent.... I don't know. This withdrawal now doesn't show up in my mycelium history, but my deposit (https://blockstream.info/tx/293a96109fd88d0baf921ea710a41db86d33db2b34169c2df2d622a2a24c0d31) does..

This is my initial deposit transaction

and here is the wallet where my change ended up

I have only tried doing this on another android device using again mycelium, but this is possible with electrum?
Yeah, it could, since your funds are still on those address base on the transaction posted.

Make sure you download the wallet from its official source = https://electrum.org/#download since there are lots of phishing  wallet out there.

so an update, I tried restoring using the seed words on electrum, this took a minute, but when it was done, it shows a balance $300 less than my current mycelium shows, in total its something like $500 less including that $200 from before.

That's not unexpected. Mycelium allows you to use/manage all three of the common address types in the one wallet... so you can see/use "1"-type (P2PKH), "3"-type (P2SH-Segwit) and "bc1"-type (P2WPKH, "native segwit") addresses and their balances all at the same time.

Unfortunately, Electrum only allows one address type per wallet. The transaction you sent for the ~$150, sent the change to a "3"-type address. So, Electrum would not be able to see/display that address with it's coins.

If you restore your seed words on Electrum, but this time, select the "P2SH-SegWit (p2wpkh-p2sh)" option, you should then see the transactions/amount that is missing from the "Legacy (p2pkh)" Electrum wallet that you would have already restored:

NOTE: It might also be worth, creating a 3rd wallet, using your Mycelium seed words and selecting the "Native Segwit (p2wpkh)" option, and see if that also shows any transaction history.

That's actually Mycelium's privacy feature that's configured to send the change to your account's same address-type of the recipient.
Most of the time, reloading the account works ('Accounts' tab->Click account->press 'menu/...'->Reload account).

If not, HCP's suggestion to restore all three address type wallets to Electrum should work.
