I'm thinking of starting my own faucet, just to learn more about crypto, making profit is a distant second.

Is it possible now to have enough crypto to come from the ads to supply the faucet, to make it self-sustaining? So I wouldn't have to keep pouring money into it?

If so, what would be:

1. an enticing enough claim amount to keep people coming back

2. a reasonable interval to keep visitors coming and not draining the faucet too quickly

3. a good way to protect against bots

I'm leaning toward making it public, not requiring a registration, is that a good idea?

Basing all of this on the 99satoshis blog post, in which the guys actually made a profit, but it was from AdSense and a few years ago, before it got shut down by AdSense.

I want to make my faucet run off of a-ads or something else that pays in bitcoin, so the funds would go directly to the faucet.

Think this is possible? Not possible? Please poke some holes in this "plan" Smiley Thanks in advance!

I don't think many ad websites pay in bitcoin and offer competitive rates, but it's been a while...

You could probably go with 100 sats/hr but with 1k users that's $10 an hour and $240 a day... Still potentially possible with enough startup capital and offering a high enough withdrawal threshold (eg 0.003).

A lot of the successful faucets still running are either very well known or have a gambling aspect inside.

I Second the trick to make the minimum withdrawal amount high enough for the users to withdraw within a week or four.
That is also to have enough time to check for possible earnings from exploits and other "hacks".

For the amount, it's best to cut the 100sat/h into 18-20sat/10minutes.
That'll increase the number of visits without decreasing the marketable BTC per hour rate.

Referral system is also a very effective feature to increase the number of users with minimal additional cost.

You have to try making it here so that we can start. If it has good offer then why not? However, bitcoin faucet nowadays not actually earning due to high btc price not like before that if we have just known that bitcoin faucets held being kept then selling it now would be a great value already after btc made a good market price increase. For now, only few bitcoon faucets had been visible and mostly requires you t accmulate certain amount before you can withdraw and you can also play in their games that earn btc or double your btc if you are lucky.

I'm sorry if this is not the answer you're looking for, but I don't think creating a faucet site is really the way to go when wanting to earn about crypto. Reading and trying things out is still a lot better and productive of your time. Not to mention that faucets have been slowly but surely dying down throughout the years.

As for profit, I've ran a small faucet site years ago, and if my memory serves me right, a good number of ad networks don't like accepting faucet sites to use their service(not sure right now though).

If you just want to learn about crypto, starting a live project where you put your money at stake is not the best idea, you might get hacked or exploited by bots, or your business model might be faulty, or you'll just lose in competition vs established faucets. In any case, you'll probably lose your money - can you afford that? You can deploy your project on testnet though, and you won't be making any money with it, but it will be a good practice for making Bitcoin applications.

~Snipped~

It'll be quite hard to create a self-sustaining faucet from the beginning [expect more losses than gains].
- Having said that, the following post might come in handy:

great for new Faucets

~Snipped~

3. a good way to protect against bots
I used to be involved with faucets back in the day and finding a way to fully protect faucets against bots was [and still is] easier said than done.
- I do know that a lot has changed since then (in terms of protection) but bot creators are more creative now.

I'm leaning toward making it public, not requiring a registration, is that a good idea?
Probably not.

I also thinking about this, especially these days Bitcoin faucets become not so popular unless on some gambling websites that offer faucet on their site to keep their customer active.
These days, I only see faucets embedded on such gambling websites or exchanges which is more useful for me not a Bitcoin faucet alone.

You are absolutely right because now most of services want some better sites or blogs instead of faucets so its not good idea to have this one better try with some other way is much better like if you want to increase income then try to have some better skills or learn some better way to increase right now going with faucet never helps you.

Yeap, and it's quite an obvious reason why. If an ad network allows their ads to be put on faucet sites, advertisers would be turned off from using that specific ad network because obviously they won't be able to take much advantage of the ads and get some clicks because people who go to faucet sites, well, go there for the faucet! Conversions and CPM would be too low.

Hi,

I think I can answer you in an exhaustive way, since I have been trying to make money from a faucet for a few years, but I have not yet succeeded. Cry
First of all, it is necessary to understand where to take the profits and make the business sustainable.
The first thing that comes to mind is obviously to exploit the banner ads, but, to date, these really pay a pittance.
a-ads has an average cpm of $ 0.27, and is one of the best I've ever used, with thousands of views, the others are very close to $ 0.
The problem really isn't so much the ads platform you use, but the number of UNIQUE visits you get. Below 1000 daily visits, the earnings will always be tending to zero.
This is due to the auction mechanism with which advertising spaces work. If advertisers see that your site has low traffic, they will have no interest in placing their ads there, and therefore the price (and therefore your earnings) will remain low.
Also, many ad services don't allow you to put their banners on sites that have an Alexa Rank below a certain threshold, for example Mellow Ads (which I remember paid well) requires an Alexa Rank below 100K.
So the first step is to be able to have a good number of active users, but this means that at least in the first period (a month or so) the faucet will cost you more than it makes you earn.
So it all depends on whether you can set up the faucet so that users come to you, but without letting clean you out.

A good choice in my opinion is by limiting the amount that the faucet give for a single user during day, so If an user claim multiple time, you are sure he will not take more than X satoshi per day (this also prevent abuse).
You can do all other checks you think are useful to maintain the faucet sustainable.

If you have other question about you can pm me or inbox my mail, I'm happy to help.  Smiley

Guys, this is great stuff, thanks so much for the info!

So ... another round of questions based on your input:

1. What if the faucet dispensed alcoins, not BTC? Would that make it more interesting/enticing? And if so, which altcoins would you suggest?

2. How would you get to 1000 views daily to make the ad networks happy? What's the best and safest method in you mind?

BTW, I'm now leaning toward a "private club" faucet where registration is required and manually approved, to fend off bots. That would keep only the serious claimers, no?

if you plan to run a faucet using altcoin you can use faucetpay
the  faucet script is supported with bitcoin and 7 altcoin
i also have bitcoin faucet : https://cryptodirectories.com/faucet
but i also plan to add altcoin faucet in the future
when i start it i didnt even spend bitcoin I just make my direct faucet list and use a-ads with the earning i start my own faucet
you just need to limit the claim of user so that it will not be drain fast by a few user while you are waiting to get paid from referral and ads
im using the wordpress faucet script and it very easy to set up
they also have stand-alone faucet script but i never try it before so i cant give my opinion

Thanks, I found it -- but like you mentioned on the FaucetPay forum, I also don't have any understanding of how to set it up. There does not seem to be a tutorial or a guide.

How DID you set it up? Can you share?

there is really no tutorial available
at first im also looking for tutorial because i thought it might affect my website
so i make backup first before i upload it in my wordpress
but after you upload the faucet script it is really easy to set up
you just need to get your api in faucetpay add it in your configuration
change the timer and the rewards then set up the captcha then paste the shortcode located in support in a page

Edit : if you are still interested to have your own faucet i make a simple guide here : https://cryptodirectories.com/crypto-directory/crypto-faucet-guide/
