A woman has been arrested in the United States for hiring a killer with bitcoin  Shocked Shocked Shocked

A Nevada woman has appeared in federal court on charges of paying $ 5,000 in bitcoin to a killer to kill her ex-husband.

According to coindesk Thirty-six-year-old Kristy Lynn Felkins has been summoned to court on charges of paying 12 bitcoins ($ 5,000 at the time) for trying to hire a killer to kill his ex-wife. The case is said to be related to another case involving the recruitment of a killer. It is worth noting that this killer was not hired in the end.

U.S. law enforcement officials say Homeland Security agents managed to crack down on bitcoins paid to hire a killer. These bitcoins are linked to the Falkins account on the local bitcoin website. Falkins is said to have spoken to the scammer before paying him.

The rumors circulating about this criminal case show that the scammer, over a period of one month, tried hard to persuade Falkins to use a more expensive method of murder. While the murder ultimately does not take place, the scammer cuts off contact with the Falkins without leaving a trace.

Federal agents say an unnamed hacker hacked the killer recruitment site, providing information such as conversations, bitcoin addresses and other data to security officials in January 2019.

The data provided by the hacker to the judiciary has similar implications to another case that federal agents are investigating. This case is also related to a killer recruitment website in Dark Web.

Judicial officials say their source provided a wealth of information about several open cases, but did not name herself or these sites.

Federal officials say the information provided by the hacker is "reliable." The archived documents of the case refer to the hacker as a foreign national convicted of possessing child pornography.

Documents in the Falkins case show that he cooperated with the US government without any financial request or even request for release from prison.

The US Department of Homeland Security has not yet officially commented on the matter.

Many people think that bitcoin transactions are untraceable and that they can be used to finance crimes "completely" anonymously. But the reality is that the bitcoin blockchain sometimes reaches out to security systems to handle cases more efficiently.

You have to be stupid to hire a killer these days. Most of the adds online are fakes set up by the police and you can't even be sure if the guy won't scam you.

It's so easy to take the downpayment and run because you know she won't report it. What would she say? I hired a killer and he didn't do his job? Cheesy

It's a shame that people consider murder to deal with personal issues. It's good that the killer wasn't hired, though. As for Bitcoin, I don't think the means of payment should be emphasized. What's bad is the killer part, not the Bitcoin part. But when Bitcoin is mentioned in such stories, the content of the story casts a shadow on BTC reputation as well. As if killers aren't hired with USD.

People make stupid decisions when their rationality is muddled by emotion in the case of this one maybe anger for her ex-husband. You can't really blame their stupidity if it involves emotions. The best thing that we can do is to crackdown this scammers online because they do know how to play with emotions and they exploit it because they know that law enforcement do not follow up on them. My advice to people that will attempt this stupid games of hiring "hitman" online is take a deep breath and ask yourself whether you can live with your choices and its consequences for the rest of your life.

Regarding OP, add a link so readers can validate the post whether they are from fake news website. It adds to the quality.

Yes. Hiring a killer should be done in a chain and with familiarity.
Not directly

Unfortunately, people think that everything is like a movie Cheesy

I'd say it shouldn't be done at all Wink

There was a case years ago in the US where a woman tried this "chain" youre talking about. She contacted her friend and asked if he could help her find a killer because she wants to get rid of her husband. The guy went straight to the police and they sent an undercover officer to record her describing all the details.

Don't do it people!

Well its only just to arrest someone who violates the law, this as far as I know is attempted murder. Apparently she is using bitcoin to pay is just not making it bad for the reputation. It would have been good if coindesk also get the whole story as to why she wanted the guy dead.

I've seen this on TV. She still deny even after arrested. Seen lots of crime documentary, reasons are mostly about money, new love and kid's custody.

Though the bitcoin was definitely used in an unfortunate manner, well, in the end, it's just bitcoin being used the same way fiat money like the USD is being used. Surprise, I guess? Just a topic that got to the headlines because bitcoin is involved.

Perfectly explained mode of payment is just an option like it can be paid in anything be it fiat or crypto, the result of murdering something is the biggest thing out here. Its unfortunate that such things happen as such people do not deserve to live freely and now police will take its action. But media has its own light to portray in negative way for crypto hope this stops.

Myself too saw a list of websites on an youtube video through which one can hire a killer. For each activity there is different pay rate. The service starts from fracturing, harming to killing. Upon that I don't think this news to be big. When there is good with something, it'll also have negative things associated with it. The users need to use it for the good and not for the bad.

It is indeed sad to hear this news that even bitcoin can now use in huge crimes like hiring a killer for killing someone that is we know innocent. And also what saddens the most is can also be used in crimes not only in cyber or virtual world but also in reality. This is would be another reason that's why most of the people are still disagree on using bitcoin.

Exactly! I was about to mention that the hire of the killer could be done using any other payment method. It just so happened that the lady used bitcoin in her transactions which, unfortunately, contributed to the stigma of bitcoin as a means of perpetrating a crime. Just because bitcoins have been linked to be a method of payment for illegal transactions does not make its entirety negative and illegal.

Myself too saw a list of websites on an youtube video through which one can hire a killer. For each activity there is different pay rate. The service starts from fracturing, harming to killing. I mean, people can always hire or purchase contrabands using any payment method. It is just unfortunate that bitcoins have been put in a negative spotlight which contributes to its growing stigma among the people.

she ordered a hitman(s) in 2016. no wonder she paid 12 bitcoins which worth $5,000 at the time.

Bitcoin has nothing to do with this incident. Consider that she could have paid fiat to the killer too. The focus should not be on what is paid to the killer, the main point is women who did this wrong thing by hiring a killer. I don't think coin desk should emphasize on this story much as it is not related to crypto currencies.

You have to be stupid to hire a killer these days. Most of the adds online are fakes set up by the police and you can't even be sure if the guy won't scam you.
It's really funny why there are people who think that hiring killers online is legit, though I'm not really sure but logically how are these people gets the job done especially when you're from the other side of the globe. And yes, if there is going to be a killer for hire online that could be just an entrapment operation for the authorities trying to capture some criminals online.

What would she say? I hired a killer and he didn't do his job? Cheesy
The story is really shady, I don't get to see the source, could have been a made up story. I'll buy into this story once a credible source shows up.

There is no killer...   Undecided It's a scam. People that kill don't work on the internet.

I'm pretty sure authorities have better things to do. Anything that is extreme that you see online is a scam. All that scary stuff is just made up for entertainment. They do make good storied. There is a tv series about the darkweb stories. Yes, its made up but its still fun.

She couldn't find a better way, hiring someone who she personally met is more stupid.

If I have to put my self in her shoe, I couldnt find a better way than seeking an online hitman, most likely on the deepweb so it can't blackmail me to ask for more than $5k. If she just desperately wanna kill the husband, she should just be the one to do it. Its however going to take a pro of the pro to get away wit hthe forensic investigations.

Seems like an old article? 12 bitcoins which equated to $5000, at today's price, 12 bitcoins should go for around more than $100,000. Sides, even if we do say that the woman got it since she didn't hide her address, that was years ago when not much was really being paid attention to the security or privacy of addresses of most people. Plus, oddly enough, it's either the killer met up with the woman herself and transferred BTC directly, or through address, but in that case, the killers should also know who the woman is. If that was the case, kind of stupid from the side of the woman who hired the killer.

There is no killer...   Undecided It's a scam. People that kill don't work on the internet.
There is, but negotiations broke down. If what @TedMosby's link is actually the article op has said, then negotiations broke down after the killer tried to offer more expensive ways to kill someone. Seeing that OP and the link provided pertain to the same woman, it should be the same story OP has said.
