The chief executive of the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer has warned that not enough Covid-19 vaccines will be available for everyone in the world to be inoculated until the end of 2024 at the earliest.

Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the Serum Institute of India, has warned that it will take at least four years to make enough Covid-19 vaccines for the entire world, according to an interview in the Financial Times.

In an interview to Financial Times, Adar Poonawalla, chief executive of Serum Institute, the world’s largest vaccine producer, has said it will take till the end of 2024 for everyone in the world to be inoculated. Poonawalla told FT that pharmaceutical firms the world over were not ramping up capacity fast enough to deliver the vaccine faster than that.

"It's going to take four to five years until everyone gets the vaccine on this planet," Poonawalla said.

Many countries believe that Covid 19 vaccines will save them from the situation, thus making some sort of unclear, and unconcise plan to slowdown, and fight the virus.

This news might actually cause panic in our world, especially to those who believes in the vaccine.

In my thoughts, this statements by the CEO was released for different countries and its citizens to not get their hopes up and expect an immediate delivery of the vaccine once the trial is all done. But it's just a way of my own thinking seeing that there are many countries conducting research about the vaccine.

Is this a strategy of the company to increase the price with regards to the high demand of the vaccine throughout the world? what's your thought?

A lot of pharma industries are in this race to produce vaccine because we all know that they are in it for money.  But until 2024? Guess a lot of population are already gone by that time. They said, Chinese vaccine will be out this year and others. We will see how effective these vaccines are. For sure, how they will distribute is which country has the highest bid. So more than likely, a lot of first world countries will have the opportunity to have access on this vaccine.

Now indeed there are not enough vaccines. But I think that quite soon there will be enough. Not everybody wants vaccines. Also afaik vaccines have to be administrated some weeks before people get any chance to get ill so the body develops the immunity (and may even do bad to already sick people).
But as said, since governments are paying the big bucks for vaccines, the "gold" rush is on.

The actual good news is that also cures get developed. I don't know how expensive those will be but together with the vaccines they'll cover (sooner or later) what we actually need.

The vaccine wouldn't go round until 2024 is a fact considering the world population which presently stood at over 7.8 Billion while the highest bidder get the vaccine first  i.e the most developed nations will inoculate their citizens first before considering other less developed nations, meanwhile Trump was promising before the end of this year which will obviously take care of the world most powerful countries first.
The pandemic will have to be continually well managed globally by putting all the precautionary measures to minimize the spread of virus until the vaccine goes round I believed this will reduce death rate although many countries will have to continually managed their economy recessions

This is actually a great stand that can oppose the statement of the CEO Mr. Poonwala. This could actually mean that they're now fighting over the credibility of the vaccine, due to the statements given by the CEO himself. Because, for what I've read, his statements implied that vaccines normally takes really long for it to be announced in public "safe and viable". Ergo, they are now competing for the market .

I am from India, and I would say that this Adar Poonawalla guy is a fraud. He is a relative of a well known opposition party politician, and he has been making useless statements such as this for sometime now. Actually no one here in India takes this guy seriously anymore. First of all, Serum Institute is not the only manufacturers of the vaccine. Even in India, we have other manufacturers such as Bharat Biotech.

Surely, it will take some time before they can completely distribute vaccines all over the world but some countries are just now depending on the vaccine to stop the pandemic so I don't know if it will really take much time.

For me, people should not panic if this is real because even if it will take until 2024 before they can complete delivering vaccines, as long as they are delivering it between those times, it will already help lessen possible more cases.

In the early developments of the vaccines, there was approximately 240+ vaccine has been discovered but only 9 of them has been passed into the final stage of testing but until now, (I read this before on news) and nobody knows how effective any of these vaccines will be or might have a critical effect on the human health.

Sometimes, I'm thinking that this pandemic most government taking advantage of, I saw like it's pure business. If you don't have money for the vaccine, surely you will die for the infection. A lot of medicines regulators was probably manipulating the vaccines, we don't know if they care for our health or for their wealth. Sometimes I think like that IMO, but good thing even there are no vaccines for our immune system, this virus can be curable.

As the CEO said, why it takes 4-5 years before it will distribute all the vaccines. I don't know why they can't produce an accurate dose of the vaccines in a short period of time than they given estimated time. If so, there's nothing we can do.

This news will surely cause panic among ordinary people once they know about it for the fact that many are expecting of the availability of virus by the end of this year or even at early months of year 2021 to hopefully end up this pandemic already. All high hopes will surely be wipe out once they know about it. But many professionals ever since this pandemic have started already stated that it will really take time like a couple of years before a total cure could be made that will end up this pandemic. It would not be at an instant that a vaccine will be produced and be made available in the market because many clinical and human trials must be done to release and claim that the vaccine is already a cure with no negative effects on the human immune system.

The vaccine will be developed within a year. Possibly by the year 2021 we can expect the vaccine to be ready for usage. As of now more and more number vaccines were under development by different medical research firms around the globe. I don't think this is correct. I read that people can get corona multiple times. The immunity after having corona will fade after some months. So just by having corona in the past is no guarantee that you can't get it again. A friend of my parents had corona in March but because she works with older people she still needs to get tested again. We still don't know enough to rely on one vaccine to cure everything. Just look at the flu, people need to get a different vaccine every year.

I honestly don't think the virus can wipe out generation, the effect of the corona virus from the report of the agency in charge of disease control in my country shows a huge drop, it's either, they lied about the previous report or the virus has been striped off it potency.

Factually incorrect article. The Russians are going to mass produce their vaccine from this month onwards and they are saying that by the end of 2021, around 2 billion doses may be made available. Also, the vaccine from one of the Chinese firms will be available in the market shortly. The OP is mentioning the vaccine from University of Oxford/AstraZeneca, but I guess we will be having much better options by 2021.

This is true, a person can still get infected again by COVID-19 even he's already been infected recently due to weak immune system. They already confirmed it that we can get COVID-19 multiple times and it's very frightening to us because it means that we can nearly died. Vaccine that has been in trial for how many times will take so long and maybe next year or 2022. I guess many people will suffer on this pandemic for long because we are still looking for a safe and efficient vaccine.

What we definitely need for a COVID-19 vaccine to be effective and be massively distributed worldwide are:

* Kills the virus quickly or prevent it from replicating to cells
* Immunity
* No side effects, contraindications or adverse reactions
* No chance that it might lead to another "illness" once vaccinated

There are currently more pharmaceutical companies that are racing around the clock for the vaccine to be developed. I would really wish that it'll be released in 2021 at least. There are some who might release it later this year, or early and mid-2021. We all hope that any of these vaccines would finally be the solution to end this horrible pandemic.

There are also some of them who are undergoing final phase of the trials. Because of the advanced technology that we have, it is possible that the vaccine could be develop much quicker than waiting for 2024. Although that 2024 would be realistic for COVID-19 vaccine to be enough, we must not lose hope that the vaccine could be released at least next year.

There are countries that claim that the vaccine can be finished next year, some say it is four years from now, and my own country says it is making a covid-19 vaccine and is in the final stages of testing.  This makes me very confused about the veracity of this vaccine itself.  Is there really a vaccine for Covid?  who really invented the covid-19 vaccine?  when will the vaccine really be finished?  This confusion has even worsened the psychological state of the community, they no longer believe in Covid-19, especially with the vaccine.  So that the number of victims of Covid continues to increase because of the decline in public awareness of the dangers of Covid itself.
