Rule number one I learned is to never reply to messages from unknown people in forum.
I would also think twice before giving anyone my real email address or telegram account.
Some people can abuse this or ask you for some help and pretend they tell you they will pay you for this help.

This is one example spam message I received today from scammers:

Quote
Dear friend,

Please forgive me for stressing you with my predicaments as I know that this letter may come to you as a big surprise. Actually, I came across your E-mail from my personal search afterward I decided to email you directly believing that you will be honest to fulfill my final wish before or after my death.

Meanwhile, I am Madam Elizabeth Edwards, 63 years, from USA, childless and I am suffering from Adenocarcinoma Cancer of the lung for the past 8 years and from all indication my condition is really deteriorating as my doctors have confirmed and courageously advised me that I may not live beyond two months from now for the reason that my tumor has reached a critical stage which has defiled all forms of medical treatment.

Since my days are numbered, I've decided willingly to fulfill my long-time vow to donate you the sum ($8.5 000.000.00) million dollars I inherited from my late husband Mr. Edward Herbart, foreign bank account over years.

If you will be honest, kind and willing to assist in transfer of this money to his or her account and use the funds for charity work of God while you use 50% for yourself. I want you to know there are no risks involved, it is 100% hitch free & safe. If you would be interested to assist in getting this fund into your account for a charity project to fulfill my promise before I die please let me know immediately. I will appreciate your utmost confidentiality as I wait for your reply.

Kindly get back to me at my discreet Email ( mrselizabethedward2@gmail.com ) for further discussion.

Best Regards
Mrs. Elizabeth Edward
mrselizabethedward2@gmail.com

Obvious scam bullshit, so please report anyone sending you anything similar.

this is like the nigerian prince. scam in the forum is very different from this one though. sometimes they want you to test the apps they created so they want you to download an apk. its not just via PM, they know how to find your telegram account as most of us just share the account here.

i sometimes reply to check what they are up to, i just don't download it. some of them can really manage to impersonate well on telegrams. they'd find it hard to do it in the forum for one single report, their account will end up useless.

You can check your spam folder of your email to witness thousands of similar messages and its an obvious scam as you said so don't get desperate and click on any file/link from that mail because it could be a malware injected file and will stole money from you in no time.

You can report them as unsolicited PM and reward them with temp or perma ban.

Lol, although I never get such kind of mail on bitcointalk. However, it makes me laugh when remembering about this similar mail that I receive in my email (which used in freelancing platforms) plus the same method they use several months back. I tried to dig some information from them and after some conversations, they sent me several photos of grandma in a hospital, when I checked those photos on the internet it just fake photos to fool the people.

Strangers are nothing more but strangers, but some people are too weak to allow strangers to lure them into sending bitcoin to them, this can happen on forums, and similar of such on social media. People need to be careful, scammers have tactics to seek for bitcoin in a way someone will become a victim. If a stranger is asking for bitcoin or introducing you into new business, be it of high or low profit, it is more likely a scam, someone should not be greedy for this and should avoid such scammers. So, not even on forums, but everywhere.

Rule number one I learned is to never reply to messages from unknown people in forum
Is this from newbie account?

You can block all newbies PM in your profile settings. Personal Message Options. Uncheck the option "Allow newbies to send you PMs.".

Kindly get back to me at my discreet Email ( mrselizabethedward2@gmail.com ) for further discussion.
If you send email to that address, your email address will be in their list and you will be spammed with emails from scammers. They can share or sell your email address for other scam teams.

I sometimes get offers to enhance my wedding tackle, and I admit that sometimes I am naked in front of the computer ( but not in McDonalds). I'm not sure if they are watching me on the camera, but I stuck a loyalty coffee bean over the lens just in case. It's a good job that I don't feel that I am disadvantaged physically. Smiley

It's kinda funny when someone messaged you something like that and then you already have many experiences about it, it seems like they already failed because of the wrong victims. Beginners mostly fall for that scam, whenever some message them our of nowhere and asking for bitcoin for any reason because of being lack of experience and knowledge about the crypto world. Just remember that we should never give any of our personal information when a stranger asks you for that.

Whenever we received a phishing email, we may report it on, reportphishing@apwg.org or ftc.gov/complaint and whenever we received phishing text we may forward it to SPAM(7726).

People also using this forum personal message option for scam attempt! It's worried. I have received these type scam and phishing message on my mail and once at a casino site through pm. There is no problem to replying them in this forum. But don't provide them your personal and important information. Although I won't suggest to reply them, just report and ignore it.

Just don't click any website without checking it. I once become a victim of email hacking so I tried to be extra careful in everything that I click especially in crypto related website. So it's better to be careful than to be a victim. There are warning here in forum if newbie message us something we don't know. Research in Google what they say about the site since there might be some one who already become a victim and spread word about his experiences.

I have a better solution. If you have the time to waste, you can bait them into thinking that you are obliging their every requests. If this was in email format, you can use an AI called RE:Scam that replies to this emails, essentially wasting their time. This is the rule of thumb on the Internet, never talk to strangers until you see their and confirm their faces because you will have no chances when you want to appeal about scam.

Interestingly, the 63-year-old grandmother can still think about crypto and admit to having cancer. If I were you, then I would never believe and this is grandma in real life. Exactly what you mean, I also never want to give anything related to email and other account like telegram and will also ignore them. She is the same age as my grandmother, and it make me want to laugh because all this time I rarely find a grandmother who is good at crypto and controls her smart phone.

That's obviously a scam, anything that is asking money or giving you money that you don't know, consider that as scammer.
As for me, if I receive that kind of message, I just ignore it but I appreciate your effort for sharing that here as not everyone are aware of such scam.

The content of the message has probably been adapted, but It seems like it was around at least as far back as 2017: see https://de-de.facebook.com/TheGreatSpamProject/posts/317129168729792/

Here’s a very similar recent one, with different names, nationality, and money amounts: https://lkml.org/lkml/2020/4/9/348, although there are plenty more versions around: https://fraudfighters.online/viewtopic.php?t=7467

I wonder if it’s just one person, or a bunch of disassociated people committing a classic case of plagiarism: copy/spin/paste …

As people have mentioned on this thread, PMs like that are best reported to the mods as "unsolicited PM”" and having the "Allow newbies to send you PMs" unchecked will go a long way…

Well, in fact, you can always reply, at least taking into account that the message is quite for sure a scam and you won't give to some stranger your personal data, credentials, wallet keys, etc.

I thought the thread was going to aware us because of some suspicious link leading to a virus or something like that; happy fact that the scammer are not so sophisticated yet.

Rule number one I learned is to never reply to messages from unknown people in forum.

Can you tell more?  If i reply on the forum to someone they fro sure dont get my email. What is a danger to reply to a private message of a scammer?

Just close your mailbox to the newbies.

Every time I got a PM from a newbie it was either a scam message or something that anyone could find its answer in 10 secs by googling.

There is nothing good can come from a newbie's PM.

There is actually no danger per se to reply a private message of a scammer, I've see situations people reply and play around with the scammers before blocking them, but not starting a conversation is the better choice, some users who are not too familiar with how scammers operate can get allured as the conversation gets deeper, that's why as a rule of thumb, it's better not to reply such scam messages, then block the user from sending you PM's going forward, delete the message and report such user.

- Someone can send you phishing link, you click and he steals your password and login data.
- Someone can send you link with malicious software.
- Someone can ask for fake help and send you their email address and you reply.
and many more
