Die Lira (mehrzahl Lire) war zwischen 1861 und 2002 die italienische Währung und zwischen 1941 und 1943 die Währung des albanischen Königreichs. Auch das napelonische Königreich Italien verwendete 1807 bis 1814 die Lira. Zwischen 1999 und 2002 war die italienische Lira offiziell eine untereinheit des Euros. Man konnte aber nur in Lire bezahlen, da es noch keine Euronoten oder -Münzen gab.

Der Name kommt von einer Wert eines Pfundes (lateinisch: libra) reines Silber und ist so direkt mit dem britischen Pfund Sterling verwandt. In einigen Ländern wie Zypern oder Malta wurde Pfund gleichbedeutend mit Lira verwendet, bis 2008 der Euro eingeführt wurde. "L", manchmal zweimal durchgestrichen ("₤") war das meist verwendete Symbol. Bis zum 2. Weltkrieg war eine Lira in 100 centesimi (einzahl: centesimo) unterteilt, was übersetzt ein hundertstel heisst.

Die Lira hat sich durchgesetzt als Einheit für 4.5 gramm Silber und 290.322 miligramm Gold, was eine eine direkte Nachfolge der sardinischen Lira ist. Andere Währungen, die durch die Lira ersetzt wurden, waren das Lombardisch-Venetianische Pfund, die zwei sizilianischen PIaster, der toskanische Florin, der Papal States scudo und die Parma Lira. 1865 wurde Italien Teil des lateinischen Geldbündnisses, in dem die Lira unter anderen mit dem belgischen, dem Französischen und dem Schweizer Franken gleichgesetzt wurde. Tatsächlich wurde die Lira in einigen gallisch-italienischen Dialekten als "franc" ausgesprochen. Natürlich wurde das 2002 alles mit dem Euro beendet.

Der 1. Weltkrieg zerstörte das lateinische Geldbündnis und in der Folge stiegen die Preise in Italien. Die Inflation wurde noch etwas beschleunigt von Mussolini, der am 18. August 1926 bekannt gab, dass der Wechselkurs zwischen Pfund und Lira £1 = 90 Lire betragen werde, obwohl der tatsächliche Kurs etwa bei 140-150 Lire pro Pfund gewesen wäre. Dies hat zu einer vorübergehenden Deflation und ernsthaften Problemen in der Wirtschaft geführt. 1927 wurde die Lira im Verhältnis 1$= 19 Lira an den US Dollar gebunden. Dieser Kurs bestand bis 1934, mit einem eigenen "Touristenkurs" von 1US$=24.89 Lira ab 1936. 1939 war der offizielle Kurs 19.8 Lira pro $.

Nach dem Angriff der Allierten auf Italien wurde der Kurs im Juni 1943 auf 1$=120 Lire (1Pfun=480 Lire) und im folgenden Monat auf 100 Lire festgelegt. In den von Deutschland besetzten Gebieten lag der Kurs bei 1 Reichsmark=10 Lire. Nach dem Krieg flukturierte der Wert der Lira, bevor Italien den Kurs auf 1$=575 Lire festlegte. Nach dem Wertverlust des Pfundes, wurde die Lire 1949 auf 1$=625 Lire herab gestuft. Dieser Kurs wurde bis zum Ende des Bretton Woods System Anfang der 1970er Jahre gehalten. Einige Phasen mit hohen Flukturierungen folgten bis zum Ersatz durch den Euro.

Die Lira war die offizielle Landeswährung von Italien bis zum 1. Januar 1999, als sie vom Euro ersetzt wurde (Euronoten und -Münzen wurden erst 2002 eingeführt). Bis zum 28. Februar 2002 konnte die alte Lira im Verhältnis 1936.27 Lire=1 Euro getauscht werden.
