Is this plagiarism?

I reported plagiarism 7+ days ago, the user in question is still active - have the criteria been lowered when it comes to plagiarism, or do all the mods think that this is not plagiarism after all? It is possible that this is an alt account of First77, but I think that the c/p of your old messages in this way is not something that should be tolerated.

Was your report handled? Seems weird because its clear plagiarism. I and have no idea why the guy is not banned yet. It should be like the rest of the copy paste madness era.

This is a clean spam, although the spammer was able to edit parts of the contents, but it is still spamming. The spammer will have nothing to offer this forum at all and should be given at least temporary ban. It is always surprising me to see people still on this forum to be spamming and plagiaring.

Not yet, which is a little strange to me because things like this are usually resolved very quickly if there are no doubts. Maybe it's just a matter of time, because I personally don't see why anyone would hesitate to sanction this with perma-ban.

If its still unhandled after 7 days then maybe the guy is a part of a bigger group which is under investigation and when they are done all of them will be banned.
It's a newbie accout so i see no reason why it's not banned. Some higher ranked members could be banned only by Global Mods or admins but that's not the case as the guy is only a newbie.

I think @mole0815's explanation is valid. Usually, I don't report plagiarism this way (I mean hadn't been using the report to moderators. It's better to report in the LoyceV thread. So global moderators would take appropriate action since all moderators can't ban a user.

Yea, it's proven plagiarism which should get a ban. Hope global moderators will notice this thread now and taka an action as well.

There are a handful of users who can... and if you use "Report to moderator" they will see it and can do something if necessary.

Good deal, and I'm hoping the mods wake up and take a look at the reports.  The example in the OP is certainly plagiarism (and idiotic in its quality as a post anyway), and if you combine that with evidence of ban evasion I see no reason why all the accounts involved shouldn't get nuked ASAP.  

Sometimes mods are slow to act, but I always had the impression they were pretty quick when it came to plagiarism.  Who knows the reason for the delay, but I'd be willing to bet this'll get handled pretty quickly now.

Spam isn't the issue here.  Plagiarism is (and ban evasion too if Rikafip is correct).  Just do yourself a favor and stay away from topics you don't clearly understand.

As for whether you think it is plagiarism or not this one is tricky.  I would say he is simply stating a fact.

If  I write the "sky is blue" I am repeating a fact.  That is not an act of plagiarism.

I would argue for the second post not be an act of plagiarism as much as it is repeating facts. But as I said the ban dodge is enough to ban this user.

I have read a lot of plagiarism accusations here on Bitcointalk.org and at least 10-15% are fact repetition which are not the same as plagiarism.

I think the idea that people see this one as plagiarism is an issue that has been hard for the forum to wrap its collective head around exactly what the act of plagiarism is.

Repeating well known facts don't call for quotes and credit. But my opinion is just that an opinion.

See he actually did not copy and paste what he did was update the facts so that they were still correct.

I earlier posted the "sky is blue"  It was indeed blue when I posted it. As it was a sunny day here in NJ when I posted it.

It is simply a set of repeated facts that were actually corrected to reflect the current truth.


1) "BTC was started in 2009 it is now close to a year later  in 2010 and  2,628,000 coins are mined"

2) "BTC was started in 2009 it is close to  11+ years later 2020 and 18,521,768 coins are mined."

1 and 2 are facts I can honestly tell you the first one I wrote and used 50 x 144 x 365 = 2,628,000 to put the coin number in.

The second one I got from coinmarketcap but I can do the math to get the number more accurate on both of the above.

Both are facts with or without  me putting them up there.

They are not original thought. Yet not plagiarism

 "I am 64 years old"   = a fact for philipma1957 next year.   god willing

I am certain  you can find the line "I am 63 years old"  on the interent  and say I copied and pasted it.

Well I did not it just happens to be a fact for me that matches other sentences written in other places.
And I did a hopeful update to 2012 to show the change in the fact.

TO me the posts  in question look like that. It is slightly different animal then plagiarism  I think it is why the op asked if it is wrong.

The user in question was banned, but not for plagiarism because my report is still unhandled and given the situation it will remain so. I have to admit I don’t see any logic in what philipma1957 is posting and his definition of plagiarism - unless you are allowed to change your old posts a bit and then post them with alt accounts.

Since the matter is resolved, I'm locking this thread.
