Help me be research lazy..

Looking for something to replace my Alienware M14X R3 basically..
Durability- Thing is gonna get dropped a lot I'm sure.. (no touchscreen crap please)
Lot of CPU and RAM to handle serious live charts and a million open tabs-
RGB keyboard- RGB chassis is cool too-
Hate the Dell charger problems-
Don't play videogames but a big graphics card is better than no or crap graphics card right?

Kinda looking at the MSI Raider laptops, but don't know if I need/want a new one with the latest gen I7s or if I should save some money and get maybe an older one with an 8th gen I7?
Bang for the buck?
New with warranty or used?

Would dual boot it, probably triple actually..
I need 7 or older for some of my car diagnostic programs.. It's fun to also have a linux OS..
So warranty would probably be worthless?

I could spend $1,200, but do I need to? Would rather not really..

My M14X has I think a 6th gen I7 and 32gb of ram, and am looking for a little upgrade from that, and to escape the Dell charger problems, and it is now quite broken in many ways..

Don't want a huge screen.. 14"-16" ish..

Could I maybe just put my 32gb of ram out of my m14x into whatever new one I get?
Don't really care about a huge SSD, and tb hdds are a dime a dozen..
Think I have a 256 ssd and a 1tb hdd I could also transplant?, but want a big CPU..

Do I really need a beast of a laptop? No..
But I like having nice things, and want one.
Needs to be cool..

Halp? What do?

If buying a 2nd hand, I'm not comfortable if it's coming from the shops. It's better to choose 2nd hand laptops from someone you know personally. If you can avail to have newer gen of CPU, it's always the best choice. Newer gen CPU's have better architectures which you'll enjoy with software that you use.

Your 6th gen w/ 32 GB is still a good spec for me.

Check this chart for the comparison of core/threads of CPUs, I hope it will help you decide.

Your 6th gen w/ 32 GB is still a good spec for me.

But a corner of the bottom case is broken, the charger port connection for the charger recognizing thing is broke (will not charge/recognise charger/Dell), "Y" button will not stay on anymore, touchpad ribbon is made by me, and the last straw now is I let my kid nephew watch a movie on it and he smashed the screen completely..
I've already fixed it many times.. Time for a new one..

I'm not going to have the time to maintain junk anymore, I need a laptop to travel/fly with that just works and is reliable, and it has to be something that I'm proud of and will respect..

Don't play videogames but a big graphics card is better than no or crap graphics card right?

No.  A bigger graphics card will mean the infrastructure to handle it at full blast - more power, more cooling - even if you don't use it.  Why pay for all that?

Stock graphic cards are more than enough for a casual gamer.

Asus Rog is good choice if you are looking for RGB combination woth performance laptop but more the graphic card then the leas backup power it will be. Did you increased your RAM from the stock because most of the laptops in this orice range are coming with 8/16 GB of memory.

I bought it like that, but it may not have been originally built that way.. IDK..
I bought it used and definitely got my money’s worth out of it.

No comments on durability?
Of course they are durable, the only issue with ROG series laptop is their battery life.Maybe you need to change your battery once a year if you are a hardcore gamer apart fro this it is sturdy and durable laptop.

I've been researching my own next laptop recently and it seems you can't beat the price/performance of the newer AMD chips

Ryzen 7 4800H, 16 Gigs RAM, 1 TB PCIe M.2 SSD, decent GPU GTX 1660Ti and it's built to be tough for US$1099

https://www.newegg.com/fortress-gray-asus-tuf-gaming-tuf706iu-as76-gaming-entertainment/p/N82E16834235407

Oh, it also has the RGB keyboard you were looking for.

An Alienware is hard to replace, will be hard to get that power in any other brand of laptop, even their cooling system has no comparison. But for the task you need it i would like to recommend a Thinkpad. Right now i'm using a Thinkpad T460p with 32Gb of ram, a SSD M.2 of 128Gb for the OS, and 1TB HDD. I like this one because it has a dedicated video chip (GeForce 940MX) and 2Gb of video, it isn't much but it makes the difference.

Another good option could be a Asus ROG, those are cheap compared to the Alienware and have some great performance too.

^What is your budget and requirement?

Maybe a simple google search can narrow the available options then better post here or any other forum to get the right suggestions.

more than a specific brand you should look at the features and choose a laptop that is good for both gaming and mining, with the amount you have available, I think you could also find a laptop with a ryzen 7 processor with a bit of luck, obviously it must also have an SSD as memory, even a small 250gb is fine, is ok to start with a medium-level video card to be upgraded at a later time
