Facebook users reported blocking information related to bitcoin. When entering the hashtag #bitcoin, a message appeared that the content was "temporarily hidden" for security reasons. This is reported by users on reddit reddit and twitter A thread on reddit says that Facebook has restricted the hashtag's output, allegedly due to violations of community policy. However, not everyone receives such notifications: a number of users without a link to the location did not notice problems with the issue. In July, cryptocurrency companies announced plans to file a class-action lawsuit against Google, Facebook and Twitter. The reason was the damage caused by the ban on advertising digital currencies on platforms.

Such a stupid move by Facebook. They do not get it: it is over now, bitcoin finally received mainstream recognition hence they should refrain from such petty actions. Good for me I do not have a Facebook account. A small piece of advice for you: you are not pointing to an article (which is the goal of this board) actually. Researching about your thread I found the following which you could have used instead. https://blockchain.news/news/facebook-bans-bitcoin-content-a-push-libraBe careful, otherwise, we might report your thread. I am agreeing more to the Redditors pointing out that it is more related to scams happening in Facebook rather than FB being related to Libra and trying to wash their competition away. I mean yes it has the same affect as removing Bitcoin related post but it will also flush out scam related posts here in FB. This might just be temporary until FB finds a good way of filtering out the scams being created daily in their social media websites.

We can say that this isnt directly talking about Banning bitcoin in regards to this step. This isnt really a major problem that needed to be discussed on.

I've always been in favour of all these content banning moves. Their house, their rules, and I'm not a user on any of these platforms but surely as a user, I'd want to see less lambo junk and more memes or whatever it is people go on FB for right? Go use twetch or powping You made me look that up. I learn new things. Although Facebook has banned Bitcoin-related posts, other cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum, Cardano, and even other alleged scams were available for search on the social media platform. That's because we're not getting offers to double our Cardano in 24 hours etc... few outside of crypto know anything beyond Bitcoin.

We can't blame Facebook for this ban... after all, it's their platform so it's up to them to make any rules. I have not been active on Facebook for a long time and only use Facebook for bounty reports. I am much happy with Twitter which gives freedom to its users, although currently, the issue of vulnerability is still Twitter's homework.

Twitter give freedom to its users? Seriously? They may be better compared to facebook, but otherwise they are certainly not giving people freedom.

I typed "#bitcoin" on the search box of Facebook and it says that it has 231k people posting it. You can see it for yourself guys. I think that's sort of a bug that Facebook did and for few users. As I can see in the results, the posts with the hashtag include old posts of months ago. I've seen the same post a month ago about "keeping our community safe" when you use the hashtag. But other than that, I've seen that it's allowed for others.

The page did did say it was a temporary ban, so it might have already been lifted. I checked out the original source tweet though, and some of the people who replied also said it was fine for them. It may have been for specific regions only, and it might not even be active anymore. It's also worth noting that there hasn't been any recent policy change (that's big enough to make actual news at least) that may have caused it. So yeah, let's put our pitchforks down lol.

Twitter and Facebook have the same censorship mentality. I am sure that sooner or later this censorship can be a big issue especially with people who are expressing different or opposing viewpoints away from the mainstream understanding of things. Censorship is bad, and they are doing it in the name of curtailing fake news. There can be a big problem when a certain platform has reached a hegemony status, it can be either that it can't be able to control itself or it has become a control freak either way not good for the public's interest.

There is nothing surprising with this news. Facebook has always acted against cryptocurrency in its platform. A few months back, they banned advertisements for ICOs. And before that, they were regularly taking down pages related to cryptocurrency exchanges and peer-to-peer platforms. Facebook still considers Bitcoin as a competitor. They were forced to abandon the Libra project, but their hostility towards Bitcoin hasn't changed.

It's possible it was a mistake or someone's private opinion being projected on the content.
It's a big company and they have people responsible for compliance, political correctness and such.
Maybe this wasn't discussed on the highest level but a low level manager chose that this or that should be censored and when people reacted was forced to make it back the way it was?

It's more related to the scams being promoted in Facebook rather than someone's personal opinion. It similar to how Twitter responded with the hacking and they disabled tweets with Bitcoin addresses. I know everything will be affected but the thing is I think this is their quick solution of removing some scams from happening and protect a lot of people losing money. Maybe this might just be temporary since they are obviously removing some relevant content for their social media.
