Florida $15/hr Miminum wage (Amendment 2) Passed! ($15/hr phased in 2026)

Amendment 2 in Florida passed, It needed 60% of the vote and got 60.8

This means that hourly minimum wage in Florida will go to $15 in 2026.

September 30, 2021 it will go from 8.56 to 10, and then it will go up by $1 every year until it reaches $15 at which point it will be tied to inflation.


It won't affect me at all, (except maybe by raising the floor my job class might get a higher wage scale). But I'm happy for everyone who's wage cucking it at minimum wage at the moment.

Also I'm going to pay respects to all those in states without a minimum wage.

I'm happy that you explained that this isn't something that is going to go into effect ASAP. It's not like Florida is going to take its min wage that is pretty close to the federals $7.25 and instantly doubling it which would kill small businesses overnight.

We're all expecting some sort of information from DeSantis' office and the state legislature on if they're going to provide relief for small businesses that are going to be pretty hurt by this. Obviously big retailers like Walmart, Target, 7-Eleven, and so on are going to be able to withstand the brunt of this. Though the mom and pop pizza place may not have the resources for that, especially in this environment.

Then again -- it's a slow path forward for the min wage to move up anyway. Much better plan then just throwing it at $15 and smacking businesses while they're down.

On the Oregon thing, I think it's a pretty good move. Why should police resources be wasted on policing something that isn't solved with more police? The way to solving drug addictions and such is treating addiction like a medical illness, which it is.

Spending tons of money on police raids, busts, overtime, and so on don't do anything to stop the drug trade.

Plus if you want to smoke weed, do shrooms, and so on -- who are you hurting if you're doing it by yourself and aren't going to drive / have kids to take care of. Other laws don't magically go away because drug laws have loosened. If you're a negligent that's still a thing, plus if you get behind the wheel it's still a DUI.

Show me how it's going to cost a lot of jobs. In the smallest tightest businesses/franchises people have family working, essentially working below minimum wage. For them, they'll get an increase in business from other working class people, so they'll do better.

Same for the franchises, the increase in wages cost is probably going to be nullified by increased sales. Also I really believe that people who do better financially can be more productive. If everyone received good wages we'd probably do a lot better as a society. This is a small step for the better. If it were up to me It'd be going up to $18 per hour before getting tied to inflation, and in a shorter time scale as well.

As for policy makers making the decisions instead of the voters, there's countries that work like that, China being a notable example. I think that western laws and society is actually self-evidently much better.

I thought from when I first read the title, it will be in effect in the coming year. Because that's quite terrible for businesses that are just slowly opening because of this pandemic. At least it will be gradual and by the time it will hit $15/hr, it won't be a problem anymore. They won't even noticed the change. At least, this amendment will be a guarantee that there will be increase of min wage in the succeeding years.

How many small business owners are there really? Last time I checked B.I.G. box stores pushed most small places out of work. Minimum wage isn’t meant to be a livable wage. If you are working 40 hours a week making $8 an hour you made a few poor life decisions.

That is the issue in a lot of places is that there are no other jobs except to work for the "big box" "megacorp".
A smaller business might be willing to pay you more but there are not as many as there used to be in a lot of spots.
So Target / Walmart / etc. have a lot more power in keeps wages lower. If there were 1000s of other "dead end" retail jobs around then there would be more a competitive environment for staff so higher wages.
Pick your industry and you see it in a lot of places.

But..... where you hit the wall is then what should not be a "low paying" position is now a lot lower then it should be because the floor is that much lower.

If Walmart can pay their lowest paid people crap, then getting that promotion to a slightly better position, that should pay a livable wage now does not pay they wage because the people below you are so much lower.

The cops already spend resources on the druggies anyways to be honest. Maybe I'm being short sighted, but to take a soft approach on hard drugs which ruins lives isn't a good thing. The fines they hand out for drugs are negligible so it won't deter drug use.

It's the businesses that pay low wages that are the terrible ones. In an ideal society there wouldn't be a minimum wage and if a free person wants to waste their time getting paid 10 cents they should be able to do it, but in the context of our society, a minimum wage protects workers from their corporate overlords.

Well, if the minimum wage rose with productivity it'd be something like $18 per hour.

And honestly all those stupid jobs is what is wrong with our society. It's an endless hamster wheel of stupidity. 150 years ago almost everyone had to produce food so that people wouldn't starve.

Now that it takes only 3% of people to produce the food, we should all be working 16 hour work weeks and live comfortably, instead we've created this shit-show of a society.

We pay rent-seeking assholes left and right, and all the work is pointless busy work. All those retail jobs are unnecessary, the wages, if set by free people would be much higher, and all the nonsense work that doesn't deserve to be done wouldn't be done. That's an ideal society right there.
