What's this?
In recent times NFTs have been booming. If you don’t know what an NFT is, you could think of it as a collectible on the blockchain. People can mint one or multiple pieces of these collectibles that are then traded on an online marketplace like Rarible and sit in your (typically ETH) wallet. Basically, people are buying random pieces of “art” or other digital wares on there. One could wonder what intrinsic value these things have, but in the end, it’s just like dealing in shit coins. Looking at the droves of shoddy recycled artwork on there, I thought “surely there must be something more creative that can be done with this”. So I set out to further develop an idea that I’ve had for quite some time: a scavenger hunt across the internet and blockchain.

But why?
Well, I’ll admit it. I’m a nerd. I like an escape room every once in a while when we aren’t held back by global pandemics. The recent birth of my daughter was enough reason for me to celebrate and share something with the community that I’ve happily been a part of over the last few years. So I decided to create an “escape room” of my own 😃

Ok, so how does it work?
When creating an NFT its creator can also provide a piece of data that only unlocks after purchase. This scavenger hunt starts with such an NFT that is placed on Rarible. There’s a limited amount of 1000 copies available for a price of 0.3 ETH each. Purchasing unlocks the first hint that can be used to find and solve the puzzles. After solving all the puzzles, you should have 12 mnemonic words and their order, which in turn can be used to unlock the ETH wallet with the grand prize in it.

Owning the Rarible/NFT is a must to complete the scavenger hunt, as it is needed during the hunt. Without it, you won’t be able to unlock the wallet. This is also done to prevent fraud. There are even a few other measures in place to ensure that there’s one winner that has gone through all the steps and solved them. You can buy as many copies of this Rarible as you’d like.

What’s in it for me?
The wallet with the prize comes pre-filled with 2 ETH. However, depending on how many copies of the NFT sell, this amount will be increased up to a maximum of 50 ETH when all copies have sold out. That means a $20,000 prize if this catches on ❤️ The additional prize money will be added using the following schedule:

So, depending on the number of copies sold, your initial 0.3 ETH “entrance fee” could be worth well over 100x in the end if you’re the first one to solve all the riddles!

A bit of a social experiment too
I’m fascinated by NFTs and the economy that has popped up around it. I will be the first to admit that this scavenger hunt is also somewhat of a social experiment.
Let’s say you’ve successfully solved all the riddles.

  • Do you cash out immediately or wait for more people to buy the NFT and increase your potential prize pot? However, this increases the risk of others cashing it out.
  • Do people buy up multiple copies of this to prevent others from solving it?
  • Since the Rarible/NFT related to this is needed to complete it, will it become a commodity that is traded?
  • Or, will this entire scavenger hunt fall flat on its face, and is no one interested in this kind of thing?

We’ll see! 😁

How can I get started?!
The NFT that will start this whole thing is posted on Rarible meaning the hunt has officially started. It will run until we have a winner.

I think that pretty much sums up all the details. If you want to tweet about this, be sure to use the hashtag #CookieScavengerHunt. So with all the official bits out of the way, there’s only one more thing to say:

Enjoy the hunt!
