Since bitcoin and altcoin are pumping these past few days I thought that it's time to take profit soon. Problem is I'm hesitating when to sell. I admit I bought some of those near their ATH on its btc value.
If I sell when it reaches ATH of USD value I can recover my loss but looking on btc value, it's not even half of how much btc I spend when I bought it.

For you, will some of the alts reach their ATH again in terms of btc value?

Any suggestion on what to do guys?

P.S. I'm not sure where is the proper board for this. I'm thinking this can be on bitcoin discussion, trading discussion, or altcoin discussion.

you have been holding for that long time but still you did not Put a selling target?in occasion like yours in which your coins comes from different season,at least you have a selling Plan ..

Example on how much value you gonna sell the first bought in which near the ATH,do you want to Make more [profit or Just break even since you will get the capital you use from long time ago( but mostly no one will do this, people tend to profit lol)

remember that no one can tell you when to buy or sell because this market is volatile and in any time prices may change.

just prepare for the Bitcoin first because i'm sure altcoins time is next after Bitcoin reach the top if when?lol no one knows.

I don't really understand how your ATH compares to usd or btc values. But why would you make up the mind of yourself with such a comparison? If you are currently in a profit position, then there is nothing wrong with selling it now. Don't let greed control you.
In fact, we never know when a new ATH peak will occur.

If you are planning to sell them to fiat, then you are good to go because you've already made profit. It doesn't matter anymore how much value they have in BTC because they will still be converted into fiat anyway. But do you need to sell them? If not, I won't if I were you.

My personal standard is that prices of altcoins should be based on Bitcoin and not on fiat. That is why I hate it when coinmarketcap and coingecko and others are listing coins in their USD prices by default. I don't like it because the goal is not to make gains in USD value but in BTC value. Incidentally, if you are a trader of altcoins and BTC, you do not celebrate because your portfolio's value has increased in terms of USD but because it increased in terms of BTC.

Truth be told, I'd rather be losing in USD but gaining in BTC than gaining in USD but losing in BTC.

The problem with pump and dumps (aka altcoins) is that there is only a limited number of times you can do it to a certain coin. For example when a coin is pumped and then dumped a lot during a certain period (like 2017) it becomes over-used.
Historically speaking 99% of altcoins will never reach their ATH while a lot of them die. That 1% may have a tiny chance of getting one last pump in before they die. They are always replaced by new unpumpd altcoins that can be pumped and dumped a lot easier than the old used ones.

I don't feel too greedy right now and perhaps I might just sell at the top, or somewhere around $25k if it ever breaches that price point. The rest is for the long run of course, as we have proven time and time again that bitcoin is here to stay and will probably just pursue higher highs along the way. Plus, a lot of institutional investors are already flocking towards bitcoin and crypto nowadays that it's hard to ignore the signs that they are also here to stay and perhaps build something that could cause a more 'official' and 'forward' approach to what we call mass adoption.

At the end of the day it'll all come down to the value of fiat since you'll eventually cash those out. If I had some altcoin investments i'm okay with the loss in terms of BTC rates as long as you profit or break even with the USD rates. I'm not against the other side but it depends on what plans you have in store with your investments if you want to continue stacking some sats then waiting for the BTC rates to rise could be a good decision too. Then again I don't know what altcoin we're talking about here and as pooya mentioned altcoins dies quickly so it might be better to take the profit.

If you have some that is showing some seriousness in terms of development which can be tracked from there GitHub, then there is a reason to still hold as the time of alt season is very near.

If I want to take a sane approach to recover my losses, I would have sold it against USD. Since you have acquired those coins almost at their ATH value, it's important to see real world money which can be used in your daily life. Unfortunately, bitcoin or altcoins have not reached to such maturity where they can be used in your daily life. So I would prefer to cash them out in USD to recover my previous losses!

Split your capital to two parts (I am here mentioning about trading altcoins)
  • First for bitcoin
  • Second for USDT

Example if you want to invest in Ethereum with total capital is $1000. Split it half:
  • First half: $500 for ETH/BTC
  • Second half: $500 for ETH/USDT
Two pairs will always have different changes at any time (believe it or not, you can observe the market and draw your own conclusion). Apply this method can help you to reduce your loss or increase your odds to have profits at anytime in the market.

To make sure it works, you can diversify your portfolio (the part for altcoins, I meant). Diversification has 2 advantages for you: manage risk better, and increase speed of capital flow.

Vital point: allocate 80 to 90 percent of your capital for Bitcoin.

From what I understand you are already in profit, so why the hesitation to take your profit before it starts dumping don't let greed get the best of you, remember you can't what will happen next.
I still don't get the "ATH of USD and ATH of btc value" have been trading for quite a while now, and from what I know is that profit is profit, as long as its not a loss your good to go, but as for me I would prefer talking my profits in USD other than bitcoin, with my profit in USD, I can sleep with both eyes closed, knowing fully well the value won't reduce, but since bitcoin is volatile you can't tell what will happen the next minute, its too risky.

This is indeed not an easy thing to make a decision, especially if our focus is increase the amount of our BTC, and to be honest I face the same dilemma, I think maybe you can sell some of it and always monitoring market conditions, this is to reduce the risk if the price not up.
Many say Altcoins will also increase but this is not a definite thing just a prediction.

this is confusing at first,  i mean your post . btc value is connected to usd value and for alts value its connected on both usd and btc price .  you need to measure it if where your comfortable with and in your case your basing on usd so follow usd value and not the btc value because this is the only way for you to recover and profit .

im not based on the u.s but i also based my decisions on the local fiat value of btc and not on the ath of btc . for your altcoins you need to do the same . dont get tempted of btc values or its ath

It depends on the situation sometimes greed gives you more trouble. I invested the lowest price of the bitcoin the same with the altcoin I didn't expect that the market price of the coins comes to their ATH before they make another set if support I already pulled most of my funds because I want to keep safe my funds and prevent getting hold longer again.

At the end of this statement, I want to tell is pull out if you think that's enough like pulling an investment in the middle of ATH. As we except if the pumps come up immediately there is a faster dump.

You should be sure of what will happen, because in market conditions NEW ATH will also provide corrections before the occurrence of a new ATH.

This will definitely happen, I think if you have bought it close to ATH then you will automatically experience a loss, but if you trade without using leverage on futures, I think it's still safe for me to hold, because I am optimistic that bitcoin will reach ATH. new in the next year. However, this certainly has to be re-analyzed what the prospects are developing so that it could be the reason why bitcoin will get its new ATH again.

Eventually we are going to sell to fiat then it should be fiat value. But there are people who would not rather sell even if the fiat value of their btc holding is going up, specially for long term holders. Of course at some point in time, even long term holders are going to sell. But the fiat value will be so huge that probably they can be set for life. 5-10 years holding your btc is not that long though, so probably in the next 2 halving and a massive spike to 6 digits, we might eventually see some bag holders selling their stash.

Once again about when to sell the right one, not only you waiting for the right moment we are the same. because we decided to sell when we often hear green signals. I think it is very simple if we are not too ambitious to get big profits. until when do you hold it? isn't this the right time?
sell at least part of it and keep the rest. because the decline will always occur in the market.
no one can know when the time is right, except to see the current movement, adjust it to your liking.

You will always stuck if you always think you must wait for price to rally back to the price you bought those coins. Enjoy every rally from 30 percent or higher and wait price dips to accumulate back. You can accumulate more coins and I believe even the price won't climb back to past all time high, you will be able to get your capital back. Even the price can climb to 30% lower than past all time high, you can get capital back if you accumulate 30% coins for your portfolio.

It is the time to take profit in USDT and wait for correction of BTC to buy back Bitcoin. Nevertheless, you have to react very fast as I guess when bitcoin dips, altcoins will rally super strong and quick in their pairs with BTC. It is for top altcoins but with penny altcoins, they will crash.

Your question is about Altcoins so the board for it is Altcoin discussion.

I usually don't care much about alts and sell whenever I find the price fair, so whenever I get at least 5% profit. The only 2 altcoins that I held for a long time were ETH and ADA.

I try to focus on BTC price of an alt so that I can get the most out of it. My goal is to have the most Bitcoin that I can so it all comes down to saving up and hodling. I wouldn't sell alts now right after a big BTC pump and wait either for a BTC correction or an "altcoin season".
