Hello everyone, I made a little research on the internet to know more about PGP Keys. As far as I know, PGP stands for Pretty Good Privacy, and is some kind of encryption software. In what case would you use a PGP key? do you have private keys and public PGP Keys? Why woyld you sign a message with your PGP Key and how do other people know the "signature" is legit?

Thanks, Matt

We have one great thread about PGP and everything you need to know about it, [Eng: Tutorial] PGP Signature - Encrypt/Decrypt message - Fingerprint. And if you want to stake it here, The BCT PGP/GPG Public Key Database: Stake Your PGP Key Here.

Pgp Originally used only to secure e-mail messages and attachments, pgp is now applied to many uses, including digital signatures, full disk encryption, and network protection, pgp stands for pretty good privacy. Pgb is provided free of charge because of the increasing social need for privacy ..

there's also the PGP "Web of Trust"

it's like an ID system, but where you control the system.

Basically, you prove that you are really yourself by having alot of other people vouching for you with their PGP ID (they do so cryptographicaly, by signing a statement saying how they know you, e.g. "he's my brother", "went to school together 98-08", "work colleague" etc)

It's more powerful than typical ID systems, because in typical ID systems there is only 1 entity who is vouching for who the person really is (the company or government that issues the IDs). Especially with government issued ID's, this is a problem: corrupt employees can issue fake ID's to friends or paying customers. Examples of such corruption are many. In the Web of Trust model, that's not so easy to do successfully, or convincingly (and anyone using their real-world ID to sign fake ID's will leave behind an evidence trail).

Mostly only computer programmers use PGP Web of Trust right now.

In what case would you use a PGP key?
In a case in which I want to encrypt a message that can be decrypted by both parties. From the one that encrypts it AND from the one that has the key to decrypt it. That's why it's called "symmetrical" encryption, because it's showing symmetry on an axis.

On the other hand, on ECIES, the message can be read only from the one that has the private key to decrypt it. Hence, "asymmetrical".

You can encrypt symmetrically with PGP by installing gpg4win. For a beginner, the GUI of kleopatra is good enough to make gpg understandable.

After you generate a pair of keys, here's how you can encrypt a message:

(On the second dropdown you can choose the recipient after he/she's given you a public key)

If ECIES is unknown to you, which is most probably, you'll find out that electrum allows you to encrypt that way:
