This is not a cult. You don't have to defend the network with your lives.

It's highly unlikely that Bitcoin will 'die' unless there is a catastrophic event that brings down the entire internet and all of the hard drive's contents. The number of nodes that are present on the network ensures that there is sufficient redundancy. It also won't really matter that much if Bitcoin gets abandoned because there'll probably be a better version of the crypto available.

For there to be a discussion on this you would have to bring examples of when the Bitcoin network was being defended to the death.
If someone comes along to spread fud, or wrong information in the community, then of course other users would correct them or dismiss their opinions if they're just trolls. This doesn't mean that any constrictive criticism would be dismissed; if you stick around long enough you'll come across open discussions on scalability as well as spike in transaction fees.

There a saying which I came across a while back which I'll paraphrase here as I can't remember the exact words;
"Watch where you put your feet and when you're convinced it's the right step, set your feet strongly".

This means if someone has considered the pros and cons of Bitcoin and has reached the conclusion that it is worth defending and could change the financial system, they would become very enthusiastic about it and debunk any misinformation.

I don't think we need to exaggerate things here, bitcoin's network has been running a unprecedented 99% uptime if I'm not mistaken for the last 10 years or so. Meaning there are really people without getting incentives to keep the network secure.

And nodes will keep growing regardless, it is decentralised and this is one of bitcoin's strength and everyone knows this since the beginning. And it is not that it is going down a bit, so defend it to death is such a exaggeration.

Government around the world decide to forbidden the use of BTC just like what other country did before like China and India. Law is the natural of the new technologies especially when we are talking about finance since there are some famous people that controlling the majority of banking system of the world. You don't need to defend it to the death, whatever that means, just running a full node and talking about Bitcoin's advantages to your friends is more than enough. Bitcoin is not relying on its supporters defending it, if it was, it would have been a pretty poor design, because pure belief is hard to achieve and maintain, which is why Bitcoin uses economic incentives to function - you don't need to defend Bitcoin from a 51% attack, for example, miners will do it because staying honest is simply the best strategy.

We are already de :Pfending so called network to death, by adopting it in the mainstream era of digital world. Just imagine how we have started using bitcoin on the mass scale and how people has set up huge mining farms around the globe. I don't think that these mining farms will go abandoned after so much investment into it and so much profitability is already accomplished by them.

These farms are working around the clock to keep the blockchain strong enough to stay forever. Moreover consider the giant public network where every computer is connected, it's not easy to take it down at this stage.

Just brace yourself to see newer development every other year and wait for this network to become so much sophisticated that there won't be any power off for it. :-)

As long as bitcoin works this way there is nothing to defend, given that BTC is defending itself pretty handsomely since its inception. Do your small part running a node, explaining others about the real bitcoin specs and everything will continue to work.

This was exactly my thinking as well, what kind of scenario does the OP have in mind, right now there is no existential threat to bitcoin and there will not be one for some time, one of the ones that are brought most of the time are quantum computers and while such technology could be a threat it is not something that will appear out of nowhere, the developers will have years if not a decade to do something about it.

So there is no need to be so dramatic about defending bitcoin and the network since that is something a great deal of people have an interest not only for ideological reasons but also because there is so much money invested in bitcoin now that it is slowly becoming too big to fail.

i dont know where the OP got the idea of his statement. but yeah, theres no need to defend or anything because there's nothing to defend for in the first place. we can say that the btc network is relatively secure as there are people who are into this even without the request of the community.
or maybe the op meant defend the existence of btc to other nonbelievers? anyway, we cant push other people to believe in crypto or btc in particular, you can educate them but it is still up to them how they will use crypto in their lives. dont expect that they will embrace at the first time they will hear it. but only a matter of time before they realized whats their missing...

Even if we are not talking metaphorically, the attacks against the network is relentless that it becomes impossible for a one man army to defend it. Defending something you benefit from should come to an extent and I think putting almost your entire life is not an ideal move to be honest. Bitcoin needs people that think for themselves, not sycophants who will be easily dissuaded that bitcoin can do no wrong. People like that is the worst because they will not listen to a voice of reason if the thing that they love is criticized. What do you mean? A war? Absolutely when things like that happens and weapon of mass destruction occurs then probably all of currency will become worthless because humanity will be badly affected.

Ethereum is already a good replacement for bitcoin so it is really not a worry if bitcoin will be left behind. Right now, we are investing on other coins so that we can have some other source of profits when bitcoin is not in a good move or not in a bull run. That's a good example that there are also cryptocurrency that is good to invest as an asset not only bitcoin.
