Definitely not good for Ethereum because of the 4gb vram, claymore have stopped supports for old Radeon GPUs, the only algorithm that you can mine with a R9 290 is RandomX and ProgPow, get XMrig miner to mine Monero or download Nicehash software miner to get the most profitable coin to mine with this GPU, goodluck

This video card has a very high power consumption.
Try Ethereum Classic Mining and Phoenix Miner

mine ETC, you get pretty much the same hashrate as for ETH in the good old days.

And your profit is the same as in the good old days?
I believe that you can mine on such video cards only if the electricity is free or very very cheap.

Sell it and get a 3060ti.
The time of 290s is long over.

Had an awesome 6 card R9 290 rig back in 2017. The thing ate around 1250w of electricity and hashed ca 31-32MH/s per card when mining Ethereum. Was fully water cooled with heat exchangers placed on balcony. Basically ran my rig near 20°C or even sub-ambient (condensation was annoying problem when this happened Grin)

Electricity is kind of cheap here, so I paid 100eur per month for power and a good amount of profit was still made.

At first, only mined ETH, then some other coins, then ETN (mining this was crazy profitable) and final coins I mined were Cryptonote coins.
The times were different then though.

ETC, RVN, some else ETHASH coins from this list:
https://minerstat.com/dag-size-calculator

But the best choice is to sell them. Huge power consumption without coins with nice profit makes these cards just trash without future.

PS. And you can try to mine ETH using TRM or Phoenix miners.

R9 290 is power hungry so it's a big NO for mining unless you have free electricity at home, also it's good for gaming so you can still sell for good amount of money on ebay and use the money to buy better gpu for mining like gtx1660 Ti or RX580

yeah but ETC profit will not cover his electric bill unless it is free. besides etc paying for 30mhs like 0.4-0.5$.ETC is not like used to be. i was happy for dag but i did not know that they gonna pay so less

gtx1660 Ti  is a bad video card for mining, it is better to buy gtx1660 super.
RX580  is the same as the RX480 or even worse, probably better to buy the RX5500XT 8 GB.
The RX5500 8GB video card consumes much less electricity.

Is the performance of a RX5500XT same thing with RX580? Lol RX5500XT gives only 25MHS mining Ethereum and RX580 gives 32MHs when mining Ethereum with just 80watt power draw, which one is better? It clear that a RX580 with 8gb VRAM is a better option

I had a bunch of these and couldn't find anything worthwhile to mine. One issue is that its 4GB and you can't mine ETH on it. Another issue is that it uses like 200Watts to mine ETH at 28-29MH/s so very inefficient when an 4 year old RX 470 gets 130 Watts.

What I found was that they sell very easy for gamers. Gamers love these cards for some reason. Make an ad on Craigslist and some kid will buy it to game, you might get up to $70 for it. They were good cards back in the day but their mining days are over. Best would be to sell it in a crossfire setup if you got more than 1 of them. They will get lots of gaming power for a small price. Gamers don't care about power efficiencies since they game like 1-2 hours a day or a week.

A RX470 can do 31mhs at 70W power draw if you use Minerstat OS, this card is still a better choice than most new costly gpus out there, I'd choose this card because it's cheaper and also can be get at used on ebay, R9 280 is not good for mining any because of low vram and high energy consumption

If not for the high energy consumption R9 280 is still good for mining ethereum classic, the new etc hashing algorithm supports old graphic cards with 3-4gb VRAM but the high power consumption ruin every opportunity to gain something out of the card

RX5500XT gives  27-28MHS and consumes 80-90 watts from the wall
RX580 gives 29-31MHS and consumes 105-120 watts from the wall
32MHS  is a very high overclocking for this GPU

I've also seen some RX580 models that do not mine with a hashrate higher than 28-29 MHS Smiley

RX 5500XT hashrate. 29.8mh/s - 80watt.

An rx470 can do 31mhs only if it’s the 8gb model. Not possible on 4GB. I had a bunch of those and highest is maybe 30mhs but it rare and needs Samsung memory perhaps.

And it definitely doesn’t do 70W. What you see is the consumption estimate by the software but the actual power consumption is more like 120-130 watts. I did what I could but even if you reduced the core as low as possible to run at like 25mhs you would barely get it below 100 watts. In today’s standards the consumption is not that great but great compared to a r9 290.

You can mine Ethereum Classic or Monero but don't expect huge rewards because the GPU is obsolete for mining crypto right now, you can find new altcoins that have low mining difficulty but it depends if the new altcoin is worth mining, make sure you do research on the new altcoin before mining

For future proof its better to buy rx5500xt instead but if you have enough free electricity RX580 with 8gb video ram is better, in the next four years to come the 5500XT will still be better but I doubt if RX580 will be able to keep up

5600xt better than 5500, but have only 6GB memory. For ETH it will be enough for 2 years at least. But the main problem of AMD GPU - they are the best GPUs for Ethash, but for the most part of other algos better NVIDIA GPUs. In such a way - 1660s or 3060ti, 3070, 3080.
For free electricity - yes, used 488-588 - is the best choice.
