So it's time to turn on my rig again but i've run out of working PSUs.

I'm looking to use a molex to 8-pin PCIE adapter like this one in the image below.
If the 3060ti only consumes around 120-150w undervolted do you guys think it's safe to use this?

A Molex plug is specified to handle less than 150w passing through it, and a typical cable has 3-4 of these, with the plug closest to the psu end of the cable having the full load connected on the cable passing through it.
Theoretically possible if you connect a single molex plug each from two different cables (and have nothing ele connected to them) to the molex to pcie connector.

But, the molex to pcie connector like the one you linked above have poor construction and below gague wires and are very likely to melt/burn under a sustained load of over 80w.

Thank you, thats the kind of information I was looking for. I also see your point about the sustained load issue - but would you know how big of a risk i'd be taking if I just want to maximize the use of an old PSU and wait for it to burn/melt? I'd be fine for that to happen as i'd be near the rig and be able to monitor it's heat, i guess i'd like to know if a burned out adapter would also likely break my GPU?

You are asking for trouble.
If for some reason your undervolting fails and your card revert to default, they will burn out

How long have you been mining ? How many rigs do you have ?
Yeah, that's what i thought

Im with the others here..doing that is asking for a fire.
Much better off to get more psu or a second psu and use a y cable to sync them.

quick note on multi psu setup...a gpu and riser are to be powered only from a psu...never mix on a riser/gpu where the power comes from.  same with mobo...power from 1 psu nothing connected except Y cable to turn them on and off together.

a molex cable adapter like the one you show needs to hook up to 2 completely separate molex cables not 1 cable  and 2 connectors.

Lets talk about your psu what make and model is it.

If you run a 3060ti sometimes it says fuck you and completely ignores your power settings.  It runs at full power.

so think that it pulls as much as 210 watts not 120-140.

You will melt the gear and can completely waste the entire rig.  Or maybe just the psu.

I would not use that adapter even with 2 completely separate molex cables.

IMO, It would be better to convert an existing 6 pin to 8 pin and use the Molex for a 6 pin connection.
It also depends on how many connections (units of 75W)  there are vs the power draw. You can cheat with
a card that overengineered its connectors, but not one that's at the limit.

For example I have a 1070 with 8+8 and a 1080TI with only 8+6. I would never use a molex for the 6 pin
connection  on the 1080ti  but wouldn't hesitate to convert a 6 pin to 8 for the 1070.

Don't mean to hijack your thread OP, but it's a similar question. Is it safe to power up to risers with one of these? Power limit is 300W, and my 10xx pull <120W. Thank you.

All is answered there.  Respect the wattage limits or you may well burn something up or everything down.

Many of my old GPUs like R9 270X came with these Molex to PCIe plugs. I assumed that if the GPU manufacture includes them inside the box, it must be safe to use. However I don't think it was a 2 Molex to 8 Pin PCIe instead they were 2 Molex to 6 Pin PCIe. The molex I think can pull max 50 Watts each , so 100 Watts total for the 6 Pin PCIe which is below the 75W rated standard for a 6 Pin PCIe. The 8 pin PCIe however is rated for 150 Watts.

What PSU do you have exactly? If you are running out of cables, you should just use another PSU and just link the 2 PSUs together into 1 rig. You just need to ground them together and this way you don't risk of burning anything up.

It's better to buy a powerpack with gpu cables and not this one, I have few of them when I was building my rigs in 2017 because they are very cheap and I ended up burning some wires up, thank God as was not away from home at the time, if not I'd have cause big damages to my home then

Regardless of the cables you use, you must never stay far away from your home, fire can happen anytime. People that mine remotely are brave.

Or prefer not to have such fire risk in thier homes...

There is nothing wrong using that cable, I've bought some brand new graphics cards that has same cable in the package, if the cable isn't safe they won't put on in the package, I got those cables from Nvidia cards the most, I believe they are safe

Generally it’s very rare for a fire to actually start to the point of burning someone’s place down. Most of the time when people pull too much current from a line, the cable melts and it pulls less and less current and causes the system to crash or shutdown. Upon investigation the miner would see the melted cable and fix the problem.

PSU also have protection against short circuits and overheating so they shut down to prevent further damage or a fire. The only mining fires I heard off were some large farms full of ASICS and not GPUs.

The molex to 6 pin is good for 75w.  If using 2 molex on a single chain then max is 156w.

The 6 pin to dual 8 pins is max 216w....but the dual 8s can pull 288w.

The link i provided spells it all out.  Exceed the ratings and its on you.  Also note that all wiring / plugs / crimps are not equal.  If any of those are skimped on your limits only decrease.

What about SATA connector ?
Personally had somme problems with SATA-PIN6 connectors - somme of my 5700 are melting it - i`m talking about powering risers.

I use up to 5 different molex cable like this for some of my gpu in my rigs and they work beautifully, you have nothing to worry about even new graphics card use to have one molex cable in it's pack, it will work perfectly with the 3060ti
