I am going to quote what I've just written in the WO thread:

Guys im sorry for asking that here , but is there any merits source here would like to save me from the newbies hell ?

i only need 3 merits and i would be appreciated if any one could help , i will delete this post after moments if i didnt get any attention .
thanks in advance <3

Not a source, but I merited you. You're still a newbie though, seems like you need more activity.

I am really surprised about that. Isn't that considered merit begging? Some people get negative trust for that and it goes against unofficial rule number 7.

I've checked his post history and it doesn't seem to me like it is so great that he deserves those merits just for asking. I'd like to know what you think about.

Yep, it's merit begging in my eyes too.
When I've seen it, I've simply reported the post for merit begging. But I see that it was not removed and ~1.5h have passed. Too bad...
...But I also know that mods don't do much handling in WO hence my report had small chance for success.

Yeah, that's basically the definition of merit begging.  He's not asking anyone to review his post history to see if there's anything worth meriting; he's just straight-out asking for someone to give him not one, but three(!) merits.

One thing I've noticed about the WO thread is that its members are exceedingly generous with their sMerits, and that guy certainly picked the right thread to beg for merits in--and I'm guessing it was intentional on his part.  I'm not saying there's merit abuse in that section, just that there are some very generous members who frequent the thread.

OP, you should report posts like that when you see them--and don't bother creating a thread like this one.  If the mods agree with your report, they'll act on it.  If not, at least you've done your part.

It's nothing but laziness.

Anyone serious about this forum can do some research and find several ways to earn a merit just by doing tasks for people.

Merits are also handed out for future favors, much like China gives out their belt and road loans.

That’s a clear case of merit begging. What is interesting is that he already had enough merits to become a JR. Member even without those he received today. He received six merits two days ago, he is only lacking an activity count of 30. He is either not aware of the activity requirements, or he saw an opportunity and used it.

Well, LOL. He's been given one merit more since I opened the thread.

Yeah, that's basically the definition of merit begging.  He's not asking anyone to review his post history to see if there's anything worth meriting; he's just straight-out asking for someone to give him not one, but three(!) merits.

Actually, he posted in this thread:

[Merit] Help newbies and those who have a little left to the next rank

and got no merit, which isn't surprising to me

One thing I've noticed about the WO thread is that its members are exceedingly generous with their sMerits, and that guy certainly picked the right thread to beg for merits in--and I'm guessing it was intentional on his part.  I'm not saying there's merit abuse in that section, just that there are some very generous members who frequent the thread.

Yeah, well. I quite like that thread because it is more like being in a pub with your friends. It's totally different from the rest of the forum, so it's not surprising that merit is given in a more funny way I'd say.

OP, you should report posts like that when you see them--and don't bother creating a thread like this one.  If the mods agree with your report, they'll act on it.  If not, at least you've done your part.

Well but my understanding is that if they agree they will delete the post but he will still keep the merits. I've googled the subject and it doesn't seem to me that he is going to be nuked for that. I've also given him negative trust, as I've seen some people do in these cases.

Indeed, he will keep the merit even if the post is removed.
The point of reporting is to have the post removed before it gets merited. As long as the post is there, it can -in theory - get more and more merit.

Also the idea of giving negative trust is not that bad after all..

An explanation of why you did it, but certainly not an excuse.

"All that mattered was not losing my immunity and going to jail" <-- Would you accept Trump's explanation of why he incited violence?

Stop being selfish and stealing merit from those that deserve it.

I don't feel this deserves a negative tag, so I have left a neutral on both the profile asking for merit and the profile giving it.

Begging didn't cross my mind when I merited him, I was just trying to help a new member out.

I will choose more wisely what to merit in the future, apparently this is serious business.

Not really so, except you aspire to be a merit source. Some members do not even bother with their smerits.
The simple rule to follow is to merit posts which you consider to be quality. It's good to help newbies rank up, but to do so you should find quality discussions that interests you to merit. Going through the user's post history is a good way to check for merit worthy replies or threads.

Ethically, you shouldn't merit your alts or sell them, the forum has no rules against these, but you can get negative trust if its proven.

I've checked his post history and it doesn't seem to me like it is so great that he deserves those merits just for asking. I'd like to know what you think about.

I will not debate if his post was merit begging or not but i don't like the approach of seeing the post history before giving the merits. If anyone has posted something which you like or it is something of value, you should give him merit even though he has been posting garbage in the past.

Perhaps this is correct when the message itself attracts attention and the hand itself moves to give merit. Let's look from the other side, a man stands with a sign on his neck for help, his car is behind him, and there is a stolen diplomat with dollars in it. Will you help him? Surely doubt it. Go to the forum with this mindset. Who needs merits? Especially if he's a beginner? Anyone who is in a hurry to start participating in subscriptions. Merits are not important to a person who came for knowledge. They come to him. And then immediately from the first messages, interest in the merits. Moreover, he is in a hurry, knowing the conditions for increasing the rank.

also i think by looking to the rank up system that soon you will be with member rank too because to be a member you should get at least 60 posts and 10 merits , so keep it up and i hope soon i will join you as well .

I don't know why you bolded just that sentence. As I said, I checked his post history to see if people had given him merits because there was something worthy in his post history. It was clear to me that he didn't deserve those merits just for that post. Although the logical thing would be to merit the other worthy posts.

As for checking the post history in general. I agree only partially that you should merit the post regardless of his post history because, sometimes, by checking his post history, if you see that he always writes crap and the post in question is exceptionally good, you might realize that he's plagiarized it.

There was a case here in meta of a guy who was merited and another forum member after going through his post history realized that he had been nuked and he was ban evading with that created second account.

Begging didn't cross my mind when I merited him, I was just trying to help a new member out.

I will choose more wisely what to merit in the future, apparently this is serious business.

I like the idea of altruism in general and I have to say that I'm also quite lenient when reporting people. I don't report a lot but I have 100% of correct reports but in this case I think merit has to be given for something worthy. I wouldn't have minded if you had read his post history and given credit to deserving posts but meriting for that post just for asking? Come on! The word merit has a meaning.

I think newbie members generally need a certain amount of time to learn about bitcoin or the forum and make their posts better and more constructive.
That's whlyy I don't think it's necessary to look at their post history so much, but to evaluate each of their posts individually.
if post is good and constructive, why not give it a merit?
