Interested in alternative decentralized robust live streaming app to youtube and or any developers looking to build something needing sponsorship.  Is Filecoin a viable platform to realistically deploy something in the near term?

I can't really comment on whether filecoin is a realistic option; although, from the very little I know about it, probably not. However, the issue with taking on a giant like Youtube is, you would probably either need a radical, evolutionary concept or enough money to be able to get a share of the market. Youtube, is probably known by everyone in the world, and to be honest Google, and a few other companies pretty much have unlimited funding. So, even if you were to grab a share of the market, it would require constant funding. If you truly wanted decentralized, then that might be an issue.

The better option would be to come up with another solution with not so much competition, and once that's generating money invest what you are earning into something like this. Youtube, is fundamentally flawed in a lot of ways, and there's definitely things that it needs improving on. However, tackling such a large company like Google, is going to be difficult even if you have funding.

Are the only distinct features of your proposed platform that it would be decentralised?

I read Welsh's reply and wanted to comment.  I've been involved in a number of youtube productions that moved to a private streaming service I've mentioned before.  You don't need to compete with YouTube - you just need to provide better content for specific subjects.

To make a streaming site you should first find a few dozen popular content creators that make the type of videos you want to concentrate on, and then come forward here looking for crypto help.  Unless you plan on financing all the initial content yourself, then I apologize.  Smiley

This generally good sound advice for almost every industry I can think of. In fact, more companies that develop into something bigger, were once a more niche based service. I believe, amazon was originally a bookstore(?), and although its not always the aim to compete, but to achieve a certain market share to justify the platform.

Although, getting back to the original discussion; I personally don't think a decentralized "Youtube" would be enough of a benefit, or even an improvement. It depends what is meant by decentralized in this instance, since decentralized might mean that the platform gets overwhelmed by spam, and therefore contributes to its death.  Obviously, you could say that going the community moderated route would work, but only once the platform is big enough, since at the start most people won't care, they'll only care if the platform appears good, without being actually attached to the idea.

To back up your point even more though, Twitch was originally a site known for gaming streams right? However, its developed into a site which hosts a number of different content, and is slowly moving away from being branded as a "gaming streaming" platform, and more of a streaming platform. I believe, there's a number of political figures that now use the service, as an example.

First, I remember when Amazon was just a book store.  Smiley

B) Spam was everywhere when youtube first launched, and people said the same thing about them and about twitter.   I didn't really follow Twitter's rise (just useless texts I thought) but YouTube's solution was to  throw more cheap storage at it until people got bored.  :/

iii) We're having a pretty detailed discussion from a one line newbie subject that's probably reliant on selling the content anyway.  No one is going to buy your map to the star's homes until you get some listings in there.   Smiley

Pewds was rumored to have partnered with DLive after he was banned on Twitch, AFAIK DLive is the only streaming site that accepts cryptocurrency for donations.

To OP, Vod did a good advice to you, look at Nebula, a platform that gathered a lot of Youtube personalities and they did some productions there that is unrestricted unlike Youtube's BS guidelines that can hammer even the innocent ones.

Yes, that was an exclusive deal but I don't know the details about their contract and how long he's going to remain as a dlive partner or probably it has already ended.

Dlive runs on Lino blockchain but checking the website of lino, it says dangerous by my browser. I don't have that much information about the said tech they use but Dlive as a streaming platform still runs today.

And they have viewers and streamers that are active as I checked them.

First of all, can anyone tell me what does decentralized video platform means? And why should I use that instead of Youtube? What will be the pros and cons of "decentralized youtube"?

Then, you have to seriously think about "How youtube has unlimited storage". They don't delete any video, even if it has been unwatched for years and still the maximum file size you can upload is 128 GB or 12 hours. Also, popular videos are stored all over the world.

Then here comes the competition. All the famous people on the internet are registered and making content on youtube. Youtube has star/famous content creators in every available and imaginable niche. For me it seems almost impossible to beat, even if Musk said that youtube is bad and SignalTube is better, it can't help you. You need serious scandal around youtube and doing a lot of dirty jobs.

Also, a partnership like Metacafe had with Skype can be very beneficial (As I remember you could only post a video from Metacafe on your timeline?).

But... As Vod said, you don't really need to compete with youtube, you can have your own audience but in this case, I prefer to be oriented on something, for example, specified like Twitch is for gamers.

Pewds is not a DLive partner anymore, rumor has it that the contract did not pass through, the partnership deal was around the time when Pewds was brimming with controversy and the N-word incident in Twitch is still a fresh wound. Good for him though that Youtube made him a partner as he is the biggest individual content creator there.

Did the the OP use the buzzterm "decentralized" without knowing what it meant?    Shocked   Shocked

There is no reason to decentralize data like videos.  I can watch it, I can encrypt it, I can give it to my friend.  It has no unique attributes (or the value inherited from that) and the subject is probably not interesting to the hosts.  Finally, only one person has to post child porn and everyone using your blockchain is guilty of a crime.

This could be an example of a private blockchain.  Upload hard to find or instructional videos for certain subjects - much like a wiki.   Members vote on the data inclusion, so everyone stores only data that interests them.   But blockchains are also good for recording change; once videos are uploaded they don't change, there is no value in "owning" one and they are cannot be divided.

You'd be better off keeping a file server or torrent of the data you wanted to share.

Maybe what OP meant with decentralized videos is something like those LiveLeak videos, or the era of Facebook Beheading videos.

If you are looking for something strong that is decentralized then stay away from cryptocurrencies, they are slow and do not perform well except in monetary exchanges.
We cannot have a completely decentralized technology, but it can be distributed. torrent may be good.

Decentralized video streaming/sharing site would be good idea.
You'll will really need good/sustainable incentive model that can attract and retain talents and lots of others users.
YouTube is based on model that seems to reward quality, and delivers contents based on users interest. I believe lots its model could be successfully replicated on decentralized video sites if you could first of all develop a Decentralized ID system for identification of users and automatically understanding what interest them through their online activities that are linked to their decentralized ID.

Ok.... for the live of me I cannot remember the guy's name now, but he promised to create a decentralized file sharing platform, where the owners of the storage gets paid for the content that are stored on their drives. He went silent on this project, but that would have been massive and it would cost you almost nothing to store virtually any content on other people's drives.

He has a Japanese name .....(uhmmmm it's bugging me now)  ... in any way, you do not need to have deep pockets if you can develop something like that. (You will just have to get a army of mods with full access to that content to moderate the content to protect yourself)  Roll Eyes
