i'm interested in buying gold coins with bitcoin. i am hoping to avoid KYC.

the most prominent choices are https://www.apmex.com and https://www.jmbullion.com. both process their bitcoin payments through bitpay, who may be in the process of mandating KYC.

apmex says in their terms they will demand KYC "at their discretion". jmbullion requires KYC above $3k. so i'm thinking about buying 1 coin at a time from jmbullion, to keep it under $3k.

does anyone have any reviews for either site, and have they ever demanded KYC from you?

are there other gold dealers who accept bitcoin---preferably not through bitpay?

It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.
Advertised sites are not endorsed by the Bitcoin Forum. They may be unsafe, untrustworthy, or illegal in your jurisdiction.

...

I have bought from each of the above two.  Both companies offer good service.  I have kept purchases under $3000 (each order) just to avoid needless KYC (though I did do KYC with Bitpay to get their debit card).

The gold dealers, of course, will know something about you, depending on how secretive (or not) you can be about your shipping address.  Including what and how much you bought.  Let's just hope that they don't pull a "Ledger" on you (have their info on you hacked).

If privacy is very important to you, then just buy in cash from your LCS (local coin shop).  Again, under $3000 (reporting requirements).

I have seen threads pop up in the "Goods" section of this forum for precious metals, bullions, gems, pricey watches and so on. Probably these are the only few who will accept a p2p trade thus going away from all the KYC/Payment processor things in the middle.

Some of them are even older users with good trade history and reputation, so it might be worth checking them out if you get time, you might have to look through that section and its cesspool of threads before finding a legitimate one and that too if they are still selling or not.

Just make sure to use an escrow if you finalize on doing the trade.

thanks. i've been doing some p2p trading for cash, and that is an attractive route, but i'm trying to keep it at volumes/frequency where it won't arouse unnecessary attention. i was hoping buying gold with bitcoin (sans KYC) could complement that strategy, rather than forcing me to do larger cash transactions just to cover the gold.

i was thinking about using a drop shipper as an extra layer of privacy. of course, that increases the chances that the gold never shows up...

i'm a tad wary of doing gold p2p due to the risk of counterfeits or poor condition. i prefer to go through a reputable dealer. but i'll look into it, thanks.

@figmentofmyass

There is also Bitgild, located in the Netherlands. https://www.bitgild.com/
They sell gold and silver and are 'well know' by people in the EU who like to buy gold/silver with cryptos. You will find their ANN thread somewhere in the 'service announcement' section by the way.

Talking about the KYC:

If you're a European citizen there is no identity verification for transactions under 10 000€ and cumulative transactions under 10 000€. So if you're a regular client, once the total of your purchases hits 10 000€, you will have no choice to get the KYC, but no need if you stay under the 10k line.
If you're not from the EU, the limit is higher but I don't remember the amount exactly

They use BTCPay to accept Bitcoin payments but you can also pay with Altcoins (via Coinpayment) and stablecoins (via Coinbase)

Bitgild, Apmex, and Jmbullion are the only 3 websites worth using. I had been looking for what was available to buy gold with Bitcoin and these were the only sites that are worth it. The others seemed either abandoned or didn't look very clean to me.

Jmbullion doesn't ship outside the US, Apmex can ship outside the US but there is an extra cost (they don't offer free shipping). Additionally don't forget about the duties taxes if there is something about it in your country.
Bitgild offer free shipping for orders above 1000€ (and no duties taxes if you're from EU since they're from EU)

Although I didn't use their services, I've heard about Bullion Star selling and buying too for Bitcoin and also offering vault if you need it.
I've heard about them because a gold-pegged token is using their services.

Unfortunately I don't know their KYC policy ... but maybe since they're from Singapore they're more lax?

this looks perfect---no bitpay and no KYC under $15k for americans. i'm gonna do a bit more due diligence but i reckon i'll give bitgild a go. thank you @LeGaulois!

tbh, i'm surprised a dutch company can maintain that lax of an AML/KYC policy in the face of EU regulations.

and no duties taxes if you're from EU since they're from EU

i'm in the states and have zero experience with this. fortunately, i'm reading that there is no duty on gold/bullion. but legally the items must be declared and a FINCEN form will be filed at $10k+. so i'll definitely make sure to keep any shipment below that threshold...

You might have decent luck dropping a line on the collectibles page. From time to time I've seen precious metals offered at spot. Depending on what you are looking for as well you might save some sats in shipping/border fees, as a lot of it is already in the US.

thanks, i did take a look and gold coins do occasionally pop up there, but not too often. maybe i could make a thread, though i was kinda just hoping to find an offer from someone reputable. i'm a little worried about counterfeits/lack of documentation. i suppose if i can get someone like Lesbian Cow to escrow a deal and test the gold, then it's a good (private) option.

i'm surprised there isn't more overlap between bitcoiners and gold collectors tbh. seems like a match made in heaven to me.

Not sure if they service the US, but check out silvergoldbull.com

Canadians can try silvergoldbull.ca

You'll want bullion or bars for the lowest premiums.

I collected a list a couple of years back but decided to go the local route instead, so I can't vouch for any of the names I'll be listing but they might come in handy...
* Kindly DYOR before using them.

Note: Some of their listings are out of stock [might have a hard time finding what you want].

A few more names that use BitPay [unfortunately]:
* I prefer to not vouch for any of the following names as well.

Provident was acquired not too long ago by JM Bullion, even though they still operate both JM Bullion and Provident Metals.

Provident (I have bought from "Provident" several times, including in late-2020) typically has slightly lower prices than APMEX, but the latter typically has more items in stock.

I've ordered from APMEX before with BTC, and it was shipped internationally. They did not hassle me with KYC, though my order size was around $2k~ or so, so a bit less than the $3k threshold that others are talking about for triggering KYC.

I have also ordered from KJC Bullion which is an Australia-based precious metals dealer that ships internationally. They accept BTC payments as well and I don't believe that they were using Bitpay when I last used them. I don't believe I provided KYC since the purchase was under $10k AUD.

But yes, as others said, if privacy is your utmost concern go with LCS's and/or P2P trades. Just make sure you verify the legitimacy of your metal, obviously.

I haven't heard of anyone trading precious metals for crypto in recent times... "Master Metals (Aust)" had a tiny crypto for Au/Ag/Pt portal they were trying to get started, but IIRC they rely heavily on KYC and it was going to be more likly facilitating an exchange between two users who'd deposited their metal/crypto in person well before any trades occurred.

As others have suggested some rounds can be bought for near or at spot in the collectables. And if you're feeling more adventurous, there's at least one user who is Swapping gems stones for crypto

In my country, you can buy one for a cheap price some gold although they are mostly jewelries but they are also real gold so no problem there. I haven't heard of any website that sells in crypto but there are some websites that sell some gold coins but in fiat. You might be interested in them so I will leave a link for anyone to check it out. I am not shilling this website.

Too bad. I am tempted to buy on the site you mention but I read they can ask to verify your ID for the persons paying with cryptos. Did they ever ask for your ID? They sell a French coin that I would love to have but no sites offering payment with cryptos sell it. I checked all of them :/

@Obito

Is it difficult to stay on topic?
@figmentofmyass he's looking to buy gold and pay for it with Bitcoin, that's the main question. The sites you mention do not accept BTC at all. Yes, there are websites that sell gold for cash, there are even hundreds of them, but that is not what he is looking for. And if he is, I am sure he can find it on his own without having to ask for it.

It shouldn't be a big deal if you've ever bought anything from Apple or Amazon or Best Buy or Walmart online. I gave them my address so they can ship the precious metals directly to me. Plus if you sell it back to them, they need to send you some forms for tax stuff if you made capital gains or losses, so you can file it with your respective authorities.
