Privacy to me is everything.  User privacy on social media platforms like Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter and others is a growing concern. This is because they are governed and monitored by centralized corporations. Truth is if they can kick out the President of the United States of America, they can do it to you too. This is just the beginning. Having an account on these platforms means you are giving away your privacy rights in their hands. They have complete control over users’ data, and thus, they are able to control the mind, behavior, and other aspects of the data produced. Remember the twitter crypto heist in July 2020 where the accounts of prominent people like Bill Gates, Elon Musk was hacked and the scammers made away with about $121,000 in bitcoin.
Most of the popular social media platforms track user activity. Ever wonder why certain adverts always pop up on your phone? These platforms sell your information to provide the highest bidder with more helpful targeting for their advertising and marketing purposes. Since all platforms such as Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, and others are centralized, they very well exploit the user’s content.
 This is more reason why we need decentralized blockchain social media like Minds, All.me, steemit, voice, Peepeth, DTube.

We does have access on social media regarding blockchain or cryptocurrency. Our forum, bitcointalk, is a form of social media. There's also lots of social media these days that has contents regarding cryptocurrency. Someone should just be able to determine if an article is real or not. Verify everything first before doing something you might regret.

And yes we do have some blockchain media platforms but they are not as popular as traditional social media platforms

It is wrong at reasons to create social media. If you are serious with your privacy or anonymity, you should not create any account on any social media platforms: centralized like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any decentralized ones in the future.

Participate such platforms and make status, tweets, upload selffies or disclose your IP addresses are always bad.

Privacy or anonymity maniacs can hide their identities but for the majority, they don't care about it and it is only crowd effects when they shout loudly and ask for decentralized platforms. It is very similar to cryptocurrency, they claim they need something decentralized but most of them spend most or all capital for centralized altcoins, not bitcoin.

The title should be "Why we need P2P/decentralized social media", because not all P2P/Decentralized social media are based or use Blockchain.

I think what the OP meant is that the world should fast and move away from the Web 2.0 into Web 3.0, in which the internet will be more robust, decentralized and better than now. This will happen in a way there will be distributed hash tables that will enable efficient content access and lookup, which means it will make use of blockchain. There will be decentralized marketplace to incentivize data storage and retrieval, and also a more resilient, efficient, censorship-resistant and robust internet will be created. In this case, the internet will be decentralized with the use of blockchain technology while anything making use of the internet can be decentralized, which means social media that will make use of it will be decentralized.

Additionally, there few centralized social media which respect your privacy such as Signal and regular user is most likely to use it compared with P2P alternative

I think so far they have someone's data logs, I think it is not the best option. If they go viral like Facebook and Twitter, they will do just like facebook and Twitter. What will be the best in my opinion will be decentralized social media, they have the possibilities of going viral in the future and yet will maintain privacy in a way there will be freedom of speech. People are afraid to communicate what they feel inside because of the centralized internet and social media. And it is very possible to world will gradually move away from Web 2.0 towards Web 3.0 which will be decentralized and more robust.

If you know how to be anonymous you don't need decentralized social media platforms. And if you don't know how to use it properly it doesn't matter it's decentralized or not. Using social media is a big privacy issue. However, I think the easiest way to overcome is carpe diem. Just live the moment and don't put your behind fingerprints

This is very correct and when it comes to privacy we are gradually losing it in the internet world and this should be of a great concern to us and we will no longer have control over our life and freedom without being monitored and control by the central government and the rest of them that have access to our data's.

Exactly my thoughts. Users don't have privacy in the true sense its just an illusion. As for decentralized interested being a hub for scam I think history has us traditional social media isn't scam free. Take for example the twitter heist. Telegram is also a safe haven for scammers

We need them, but the hardest part is convincing a significant number of users to use the said platform. Decentralized means less convenience. How many people would give up convenience for decentralization really? The number is too low for the platforms to survive. Hence, the closest we can get is getting rid of Facebook, Twitter and all those corporation-launched apps and websites and moving on to much better alternatives: Signal instead of WhatsApp (or Session if you want an encrypted messenger that does not even require a mobile phone number!), Linux instead of Windows, Bitcoin instead of VISA etc.

We have many alternatives, but too few people use them so most of them end up as a failed attempt to put the power back in the people's hands. It's going to take time, but at one point privacy WILL be sought after. Trust me!

It's possible, but it's better option than most social media, because it's open source and the organization behind it is non-profit organization which rely on donation.

If the design will be like the one I have read, although, may come with different approach but I doubt that. Only that the money generated will be decentralized just like in bitcoin mining and not centralized.

The idea is to allow anyone with unused hard-drive storage space to participate as a storage provider in a decentralized marketplace whereby prices are set based on supply and demand. This is a departure from centralized cloud storage with fixed pricing, such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Google.

Sigh, this thread comes up every so often on here and I have the same response to on here.

All social media platforms start in the same place - at first you want everyone to be able to share their thoughts online without any sort of intervention.

But then you release and then bam you’ve got child porn, child pedos, really racist horrible shit, nazi stuff, and so on and so forth — so you have to have some level of moderation for the really bad stuff. Next comes the bullying, harassment, incitement of violence, and so on and so forth — do you moderate this or do you just leave it because everyone has a right?

This is the struggle of moderating decentralized social media platforms. If you leave some of this stuff on here, you’ll most likely losing hosting options and may end up being personally liable depending on the amount of decentralization.

Haven’t even gotten into the whole — how do we fund a massive undertaking like this where users demand new features but don’t like ads. But we’ll leave that for later on.

blockchains are about chaining blocks of data. nothing in blockchain actually defaults to privacy.
blocks can hold any data it pleases.

i think the OP wants decentralised cloud hosted social media that does not track identifiers because each cloud is a user not some corporation,, this is an entire different tech to blockchains

There’s no need to make this blockchain, decentralized would be cool but there’s no real way for something like that to gain traction as you can’t finance features, moderate, and so on if you’re on a decentralized social media platform.
