Lost Litecoin (LTC) passphrase for wallet! Please help!

Hi there,

I had my passphrase for my litecoins (around 250 pcs) on a sheet of paper (I know, not the smartest idea) and I lost it!

I cannot remember if I choosed it on purpose or if I just smashed the keyboard and printed the passphrase (really).

In the core I can try as many passphrases as I want, is there any way to find the right one?

That is bad, do you have a copy on your computer before you write it down? that is very hard to guess, you should look in your computer maybe you have written it down or type in your computer before writing it on a piece of paper when I have a passphrase I always make a file on my pc before anything else to avoid this kind of accident,

It's actually the right thing to do -- writing your seed phrase on a piece of paper and then make a copy of that paper as a backup. That's the most common way of storing cryptocurrency seed phrase.

If you can't remember most of the words given to you then you have little to no chance of recovering your Litecoins.

You just did it right when you have written it on a piece of paper. What you did wrong is you haven't backed it up with another paper or another medium to write that passphrase for your recovery.

Sorry to say mate but there's no way to get it if you have lost those phrases. 250 LTC is a lot of money.

Your only option is to brute force the password but the problem with brute forcing is that you need to know something about your password and cannot do it otherwise. It is all about the number of passwords you have to test, if you don't know the length for example the number is going to be unlimited and recovering it is simply impossible. But you decrease that total count by eliminating as many cases as you can for example by knowing the length, the type of characters used (upper case, lower case, symbols,...) knowing certain phrases or characters that may be in your password,...

The encryption techniques used in encrypting keys and wallets are designed in a way that you can never brute force them if you know nothing about the password used in the encryption, otherwise they would have been insecure algorithms.

What wallet are you using to store your litecoins? It is not quite clear to me what you have lost exactly. There is a big difference between a seed phrase, a passphrase, and the password to your wallet. A seed phrase is a set of words (12-24 words) generated by wallet software and used to generate private keys for your wallet. You should have a backup of these words because with them you can always restore your wallet. A seed phrase is essentially your money. A passphrase is additional words or password-like alphanumeric string that is used along with your main seed to generate completely different sets of private keys (different wallets). In this case, the combination of the seed plus passphrase is what you need to restore access to your money. Passwords are not the same thing as seeds or passphrases. It is used to unlock your encrypted wallet file. If you lost your password but have backups of your seed and passphrase, you can easily restore your wallet. So, which of these three did you lose?

If you have some clue about your pass like what pooya said and you don't want to brute force it by yourself, then maybe you also can make someone to brute force it for you. Maybe walletrecoveryservices can help you with it, and you can pay them after the pass is cracked.

Interesting to know the services out there but then, this also posses some kind of risk as in that instant, some valuable information have been disclosed and you can never completely trust a company or someone. In my opinion, after a possible recovery from this source, it would be a good idea to create a different wallet and empty the contents of the previous in it to be on the safe side. But then, OP's problem seems to circulate about the passphrase while the testimonials on the referenced site speaks more of password and according to Witcher_Sense, there exists a distinctive difference and with that, should it be your passphrase and seed phrase be the same thing, your best chance to recovery is about your personal backup either by hardware wallet, cold storage or what ever means available to you. Guessing would end you no where regrettably.

actually I typed the passprhase in word, didn't saved it and printed it. Then I hid it (and lost it afterwards). I cannot remember what the passphrase was, it was either words that I chose on purpose or I typed random characters.

I always wondered if there is any technical possibilty to access those money/coins. Because if not, than the whole blockchain system has a problem. Always when someone loses a passphrase the money is gone forever.
