Hello. I have a set up of 4 X avalon 841 miners. each should be around 13 th/s but no matter what I try I can only get them to around 17 th/s all together. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.

Thanks! I just reviewed your troubleshooting guide and based on the information there and the logs, it all looks fine. (i did not take apart the units, reviewed the logs for now).

Is there a common reason for the miners to be working fine but in low capacity?

If you can't solve it going through the troubleshooting guide describe your setup for us if you still need help.

What PSU's are supplying the miners? Are you on 220V circuits? Are these new to you miners? Did they work before? Have you confirmed all PCI-e connectors are in place securely? If problems persist you will want to copy the "logs" into the code "#" box for review.

Also if this is used, check the "Configuration" page at the bottom it says more options. If there is any commands written in there something --avalon 8 maybe says voltage -2 or something along those lines you can delete it and then you would be back to full hashrate. A lot of these were tweaked for efficiency, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was sold like that.

I bought all four miners with the PSU together. All connector are secure, I do have two extra connectors from each PSU that i have no where to connect. It is running on a 5000W 220V converter (source is 110V).

You are overloading the circuit. Try setting up 1 miner then 2. I think 2 is the max if even that many, as I haven't played with mining off a converter. I can't remember the exact details but 4 841's will draw to much power to run on that circuit.

Edit: 841's draw ~1300W each.

i edited the post.

So you think I should try running off only two miners ?I tried to run only one but I did not get to 13th/s also.  Do you think that why the setup won't reach the 50 th/s rate? The converter is 5000W i thought that should be enough for for almost full power to all four.

You would never be able to run all 4 safely as I said they draw ~1300W each, and you should never fully load a circuit. You might be able to run 3 maybe, but it also depends on what the initial amperage of the circuit you are drawing off can support (Where the Converter is plugged in)

Did you check the configuration page as I mentioned? Are there settings on it at the bottom of the page where it says more options? This is my next guess seeing as you were able to power on all 4 at the same time. Even if this is the case, the settings that could be there might be necessary for you to try and run all 4 machines, it also improved overall efficiency.

There are a few guys who have a better idea of circuits and converters and how they interact that will likely fill in gaps in future posts as well. definitely check the configuration page, and if yo do not see anything there play around with 1 or 2 miners and allowing them enough time to fully ramp up.

You say 5000w 'converter'... Please say you really mean a commercial or industrial-grade transformer. Every product I've seen that is marketed as a 'converter' is usually aimed at travelers that need to changes voltages depending on where they travel to.

Yes the 'converters are transformers but 99% of they time they are crap quality and will quickly burn out when ran heavily loaded 24x7x365. That said, since you are feed it 110v, you have at least a 50A circuit feeding it right?

Regarding run time, the 841 should reach near full speed in around 10min at most and full speed within an hour or so. I usually check things at the 10min mark, you should be over 11THs on balanced mode.

Personally, given their modest efficiency I run my remaining 841's in low-power mode. They give a solid 8.5-9THs while pulling only around 750w each and run a lot quieter as well.

edit: Looking at your API log I see Freq: 199.58mHz and some of them are even lower.  Even in low power mode mine read 495mHz. You need to find why the speed is set so low or is throttling back so much. Vin (PSU) and Vo (chip voltages) look fine so I do not think power is an immediate problem.

Thanks for the info. I use an actual converter (not the traveling kind.. over 25lb).

How can I check why the frequency is low? I powered only two now and they are running on 4th/s each and ~240mhz. How can I fix that?



Looks like problem solved! I flashed an older MM and controller versions.. and now the two units are on 13.5 each. I'll try and run it will 3 to see what happens.

Sounds like problem is mis-matched controller amd miner firmwares. Both the controller and miners firmware are matched sets.

I'd suggest upgrading to the latest ones found here https://github.com/Canaan-Creative. Scroll down to get to the Avalon 8 stuff.

edit: it looks like Canaan has redone/gutted their github repo  Angry I can't find anything with the legacy pre-A10 firmwares... wth?



Ah ha! Found the Canaan dl site for the 841's https://download.canaan-creative.com/avalon841/. Go back 1 page from there to find firmwares for the A9's, 7, 6, and older miners of theirs.
