I was curious about a post made by generalt in this thread:

Quote
Keep in mind that video cards might be going up 25% due to the new taxes

I did drop generalt a PM about his comment, but I don't know if he'll respond or not.  Does anyone know what he's talking about?  Is this a new graphics cards tax he's talking about, and if so, is it just a US thing?  I've been educating myself about GPUs lately since my interest in the Folding@Home project has grown, and I just ordered a new GPU from Newegg.

Any input would be helpful; thanks everyone.

Yes, the Trump Administration in the US set a 25% tariff on GPUs/Mobos from China.
If you google the actual tariff you could probably find it, but suffice it to say manufacturer prices in the US have risen rapidly due to this change.

~snip~ and I just ordered a new GPU from Newegg.

You probably bought at just the right time then if the price hadn't just spiked. Here is an article that goes into it a bit https://www.extremetech.com/computing/318861-gpu-motherboard-prices-will-jump-thanks-to-us-china-trade-war

Almost like trying to buy GPU's in early 2018 again.

Jesus, that figures.  Hopefully Biden will start to repair the mess Trump left him and undo stuff like this.

I've seen some pretty cheap graphics cards on Newegg, though I'm sure they're not the high-performance onces everyone uses for gaming and mining (if you can still do much GPU mining anymore).  Thanks for the answer, I appreciate it.

Almost like trying to buy GPU's in early 2018 again.
Lol, was there a shortage or something?  As I said, this is something I've only recently gotten interested in, and I don't know any of the history of this stuff.  Thanks for the link, too.

In general GPUs will be snapped up by the market when Bitcoin surges like it has recently.
This is not the first or last time this phenomenon has occurred. I think it's exacerbated by current low production runs due to covid.

Right now

best buy
newegg
amazon
bhphoto
ebay
provantage
evga

are basically sold out or 50% markups.

and the tarriff rise adds to it.

eth goes up to about 1400 usd making mining it very very very lucrative.

I mine eth and covert to btc.
A good card say a nvidia 3080 makes over six usd a day.

the old msrp was 700-800  at six a day it is paid off in under 135 days.

it has a real 3 year warranty.

the next sixty days will be revealing as to card demand for mining.

taxes on imported things are everywhere but do not reach 25% i hope Biden removes this absurd taxation, so video cards are no longer cheap even bought from China and consequently they also increase the price of local ones
