I see every market has its own rules and policies, and here (coinbase) they follow the rules of the U.S and don't want any problems with the SEC. So it's no wonder it's going to be complicated to start there.
There are many market options out there,,start an easy and certainly reliable with all the security of your money
You can try market binance, okex or Kucoin,, make sure you feel comfortable and safe

Coinbase is an exchange with a very good reputation, compared to Binance I think Coinbase is better than Binance,
it's just that it's not easy to trade there, yes only a few coins selected there will be traded, of course making traders unable to trade their favorite coins,
this is which makes Coinbase's credibility even better, the coins listed there are not bad projects, there is a lot of analysis that must be done beforehand,
and will greatly impact future prices.

There is no doubt for Coinbase for Altcoins, because altcoins will be very bullish when it comes to Coinbase,
many facts have happened, that Coinbase has a huge impact on the Pump of the selected altcoins,
of course before being listed on Coinbase and rumors spread, Fomo will happen, this means Coinbase is the equivalent of Binance's Fomo.

While you're in the giving mood...what do you do when a new coin comes out and it's not offered by your exchange?
Since you are new in the market, my only advice is not jump into new coins even if they promote it as the next big project or coin that could surpass everything else. If you are willing to learn about new projects the alt coins section gives you many option and information about new projects but you need to weed out the scams and fake projects.
To get a coin listed in exchanges there are charges the developers need to pay and usually according to the budget a project is having the coins are listed in exchanges and if the exchange you are trading is not offering you can check the project /coin website to identify where they are planning to list.

For some time Binance was the best exchange for any coins, but for now CZ is listing a lot of dubious coins and coins with potential risks. So Coinbase is a really good exchange for many new projects, because this exchange work only with really big and trusted projects. And if Coinbase confirms listing of the project, it definitely deserves an attention

Coinbase exchange services are too strict for my liking, you can't trade on that exchange unless you are KYC verified

Yep, compared to the other crypto exchanges, Coinbase has some issue regarding different matters. One of it was the KYC and if you wanted to have smooth transactions with this exchange, make sure you comply all the needed details. And make sure also to read their FAQS and TOS as there are some who aren't aware that Coinbase has the right to purposely hold your coins whenevee you didn't comply or if you don't follow their TOS.

DYOR, perhaps you can find other aside from that that has less issues.
