I'll answer this simply by asking a very simple question and that is,

Who moves the market? Is it,
a) Individual investors or
b) Whales/Institutional investors

It might interest you to know that both of them invest in the same market and play roles in trying to direct or take advantage of the market and profit from themselves. In essence, they are all or partly in the market at every point but one always emerges stronger. Which ever group does can be said to have more BTC and as such, influence on the market.

This is an absurd comparison. Whales and institutional investors obviously hold more bitcoin in combination. Just look at the purchase that Microstrategy did just like the dip.
I doubt an individual can purchase that amount unless that individual is in the tier of Warren Buffett, Elon Musk, and other prominent investors that we know.

So it is a 50/50 almost split when it comes to movements in the market, if I get what you are saying. But wouldn't the masses influence the market more because they can help in circulating the coin in the economy unlike whales and institutional investors that are only a few.

I would say Satoshi. Lol.

Kidding aside, I believe that it's the institutional investors that have the edge with the current times. They have more buying power compared to an individual. For sure there are some individuals who have what it takes to compare on holdings but probably they are the ones that was into Bitcoin in the first place.

There are some holders who aren't institutional investors but early adopter of bitcoin. We can consider this as exception as they primarily get their share through activity. But if we consider it now. We can say that institutional investors have a major impact on market since they comprises of bulk holdings which is consists of massive group of investors.

But we can't neglect that individual players are also huge in numbers but their asset aren't balance or big, cause there are some who only hold dust to nuggets bitcoin.

Good point with considering small individual bitcoin owners, but my other question is why exclude the early individual adopters? What is unique to them because in my vocabulary they seem to be part of individual investors too.

I guess institutional investors hold more bitcoin because they have big funds to buy bitcoin at any price they want. But satoshi will have the biggest amount of bitcoin Grin
I am sure he will still hold his bitcoin for a long time. The whales are still buying more bitcoin, especially if the price is down, and I am sure that they accumulate more bitcoin in this situation. The institutional investors and the whales are raced to have more and more bitcoin before the price jumps to the highest price. That is a guess because we never know who has the biggest amount of bitcoin besides satoshi.

Exchanges, institutes, entities, whales are the dominant bitcoin owners. You can check the rich list of bitcoin there. There are 0.01% of Bitcoin addresses have 1000+ bitcoin and those addresses contain 5,493,831 BTC totally that account for 29.53% of current total supply.

In past months of 2020, there are more institutes joined the bitcoin market and they bought a lot of bitcoin as well moved them out of exchanges to their possible cold wallets.

The race is far from over, the biggest number that I saw is around 500k bitcoin from grayscale, I think that it will be difficult for them to get to satoshi's level because the mining bitcoin is getting harder and harder, and a small percentage of bitcoin is forever lost in the void. The only way that they will get to that level and surpass them is when the whales combined their funds and create a conglomerate and a monopoly in bitcoin.

Who knows? This is a kind of question that cant really be answered on who has the largest amount of coins possessed because in number of individual investors and institutional investors
cant really be determined thats why giving out precise numbers and presumptions into this question is really hard but for sure they do both exist into this market.
Wont even know the numbers though but whales and individuals are present.

Does it really matter? Whats the point of finding out? Even if you do know on whose those whales you cant do much thing about it because there's no way that you can
point or know on when they would buy or sell so its pointless. One things for sure that they can really make out significant effect on the entire
market once they do made out their move.

True, whales or institutional investors has a more money than individual investors because they're a group.

This is not only in Bitcoin or cryptocurrency, other investment (e.g. stock, forex, gold, precious metal etc) will always have whales want to manipulate the market.

But Bitcoin is decentralized and no one can control it, even though there's a whales want to manipulate the market by doing selling high amount money in some current rate. This wouldn't effect too much if those holders don't do panic selling and make the market more dump.

And you need to remember, Bitcoin is the most decentralized asset rather than anything.

In terms of adoption and being part of ecosystem yes. But did the early adopters add millions of dollars on bitcoin current marketcap? I guess not right? They possibly help in boosting bitcoin exposure but they can freely dump their coin as they wish which they don't put such dime compared to institutional investors isn't it. Anyway that's my opinion and some might not agree or sided with me on this.

I think that Bitcoin or whale investors have always been established and have grown as time has passed, now today there are institutional investors that have a lot to do with the market price now, Grayscale, Microstrategy, Paypal and many more who have decided Investing in Bitcoin, showing great interest in alternate technology to the traditional one, I think that's where the new investors are.

It seems hard to predict since we don't really know who holds a big amount of Bitcoin nowadays.  But based on this article, Top 5 Bitcoin Investors stated that most are institutional companies who invested in Bitcoin, based on the media reports they invested billions of dollars worth of Bitcoin last few years I think when Bitcoin is on bearish in the market.

If your question related to who owns the biggest amount of Bitcoin, I must say, the FBI.
NBI's control and probably held thousands of confiscated Bitcoin on their own wallet.
