I have some other rigs running but I am looking to building another rig  so help me to choose the best setup for mining, 2x RX5500XT or a single RX5700XT? Which one will be better in return of investment wise, energy consumption and cost

A single RX5700XT will do 54MH per second on Ethash algorithm and a single RX5500XT will do 26MH per second, so 2x RX5500XT will give 52MH combined, now 52MH vs 54MH per second, the difference isn't that much, also the power draw isn't that much too, where the real deal come from is how much you will be getting the cards, go for any that's cheaper

On ebay you can get used RX5700xt from 650$ and RX5500XT for 350$ or 400$ and don't forget that some RX5500XT comes with 4gb video memory which are bad for mining, it's better to avoid cards with 4gb video memory because they give less mining hashrate, the winner here for me is a single RX5700XT

Both GPUs are good, you can buy 2x rx5500xt or the single rx5700xt there isn't any big difference withing this move, the problem is if you are ever going to find them for cheap price because GPUs are highly costly now due to mining profitability surging higher than before, I've decide to build mine later, probably in bear market and wait for another good time like this to make more out of mining

I prefer lower power graphics cards because they have very few overheating problems and are more stable. But that doesn't mean you should buy any RX5500XT.
The RX5500XT 8GB will probably be easier to sell later, because they are cheaper and will suit many gamers.
The perfect middle is the RX5600XT.

Doesn't make sense to me because 2x RX5500XT is equal to a RX5700XT and the power is as follows

RX5500XT = 54 watts power draw mining ETH ( 2x = 108 watts)
RX5700XT =  91 - 100 watts power draw mining ETH

It's fairly the same thing and a RX5700XT still use 4MH to triumph over 2x RX5500XT

I just purchased two 5500 8gb cards for 209 each total 418.

So if you find a pair 5500 8gb cheaper than 1 5700 it makes perfect sense.

my 5500 comes on the 28th.

the truth is short term

5500 8gb shipped quick at a good price are fine.

5600 6gb shipped quick at a good price are fine

5700 8gb shipped quick at a good price are fine..

same for

nvidia 3060ti shipped quick at a good price
nvidia 3070. shipped quick at a good price
nivdia 3080.  shipped quick at a good price.

all six above are worth getting if the price is good and you get them by jan 31 or feb 1

It depends on your your conditions and capabilities. RX5700 better if you have not enough free space. It makes rigs more powerful and compact but have problems with cooling and flashing BIOS. RX5500 are better in cooling and reselling. Right now the price per hash for all GPUs is mostly the same. Just buy anything you can find.

My RX5500 gives 28MH mining ETH without problems.

That's true, I find RX5500xt to be cooler than RX5700XT and the 5500Xt is more power efficiency I guess that's why the cooler works better, combining two will give rest of mind than RX5700xt and if RX5700xt is a must one must get the three fan variants
