What address sent me a payment?

Hi all, technical noob here, long term bitcoin fan though.

I am trying to find some old wallet address for my taxes. Is it possible to find out which address sent a payment to me or is that info not available? There are a few payments from said wallet so is there any way to cross reference?

Yes, it's possible to know which addresses sent Bitcoins and which addresses received them. You can do this by checking the txid using a block explorer like blockchair.com.
Transactions consists of inputs and outputs;
• Inputs are the addresses which the coins are coming from,
• Outputs are the ones which they are going to.
A transaction can have more than one input and output.

What exactly wallet are you talking about?

Anyway, if you want to know and check your wallet address then you can directly use any block explorer but I suggest you use https://blockchair.com/ because it's easy to understand instead of inputs and outputs you can see them as recipient and sender.
Opps... Upgrade00 is a bit faster than me.



As you said there are few payments from your wallet so open that payment history and check if you can find the TXID you can use that to check the transaction with block explorer.

Another alternative for Blockchair is Blockcypher their link is https://live.blockcypher.com/

I think the wallet I cannot track down was an electrum wallet. Does that mean it would have created a new address for every tx it sent?

In that case I don’t think I can ever be sure I have found all the right xfers into my newer wallet

I think I really need the xpub but there is no way to find that again is there?

What do you mean about "you can't track down" you can't find all of your addresses? that was generated from receiving tab?
If it was Electrum then you can show all of your addresses look at the image below.

Electrum suggests new addresses anytime you request one to receive a transaction, all addresses are linked and generated from the same master keys. This is done to enhance privacy.
When sending, electrum would randomly pick from different UTXOs.
So, if you receive transactions in different addresses (or a single one even) linked to one xpub, let's say $4, $5, $10, and you want to send $11 to someone. The wallet would take the inputs from a combination of the funds in the different addresses and send your change back to a new address to maintain privacy.

You think, think and think! It seems you think too much and not possibilities or solutions at that. Well, activities or transactions are not deleted or completely erased not minding the wallet in question. Transactions that occurs on the blockchain are stored in blocks which makes it traceable.
Should you have your seed phrase intact and knowledge of the amount of BTC you expect from a particular crypto enthusiast, you can just scan through your transaction history and you just might come across it. Or perhaps, use bitref to observe the transactions on your receiving address and spot out that of concern as it is to you @OP.

Perhaps it might be easier to help if you explain your goal. Why do you need to track down addresses for taxes? That seems unusual.

Follow the steps from BitMaxz's reply, then from the Addresses tab, use the Filter to show only the receiving and used addresses.
Right-click on any address and select Details to display the address's history. From the History tab, right-click on any incoming transaction (those with a "+" sign infront of the amount) and select view on block explorer. On the block explorer you can find which inputs (addresses) were used to create that transaction.
Repeat the above steps for all incoming transactions for each receiving address.

Perhaps it might be easier to help if you explain your goal. Why do you need to track down addresses for taxes? That seems unusual.

True and op will get the answer that op is looking for instead of not telling. There are answers already i'm sure that it is correct. As shown in the image provided by bitmax, i'm sure you have seen that there are different addresses whether if it's a receiving or change and electrum will show what address is funded.

^^ Op is looking for all used addresses which received payments not only the funded ones. Change addresses can be discarded (even if they've been funded) as they are used to receive the change back from transactions he created.
As I explained in my previous post, he can use the filter feature to show only the addresses he needs (receiving + used).

sorry, i really did not make much sense with these questions, let me explain my problem

i need to calculate capital gains tax on my crypto for the last 5 years

i have a couple of old wallets i have lost the details for but happily they were emptied before i lost the details

I can see various transactions coming into my current wallet from a variety of addresses which i assume are my old wallets

1 of these addresses i see more than once so i think it is my old coinbase wallet which is great as i can now track all the transactions

the other wallet was an electrum wallet so as i understand a new address is created every time a transaction is sent

the reason i want to know the old details is so i can see the BTC price at which i acquired the BTC - i use an app called Koinley to do this

if i bought the bitcoin at $100 and put it in my old wallet but then moved it my new wallet when it was worth $1000 i only have the second value to calculate my CGT which is not correct

the problem is, as i understand, i need to xpub address from electrum to tie together all the relevant transactions

i don't think it is possible for me to to find the xpub without access to the wallet though is it?

^If you just want to know the price of BTC at the time you bought/ received can be simply done with your current wallet's transaction details itself using the app you mentioned above. AFAIK, Electrum doesn't have buy option so you probably bought BTC from coinbase then later moved to Electrum.

Electrum creates a new receiving address each time you receive a transaction.
And Electrum also creates new change addresses if you don't spend the full UTXO.

Where did you buy them?
Why don't you check the exchange / whatever you have used?

The xpub is derived from the xpriv which is derived from the seed which is represented by the mnemonic code.
Do you have your mnemonic code (12/24 words) ?

Anyway, I think you can use cointracking.info about this to calculate your gains and create your own tax report.

Yes, they do.

The first transaction consumes 1 UTXO (from 15EC9F1PtcaJYAZhCRNqfMmB4qoFC4oCQ7).
The second transaction consumes 26 UTXO (and all from the same address: 15EC9F1PtcaJYAZhCRNqfMmB4qoFC4oCQ7).

So.. yes.. they come from the same wallet. Well, given that you didn't export your private key and imported it into a different wallet.
But for your purpose, this effectively would also mean "from the same wallet".

With.a block explorer, you can trace where bitcoins came from, so it might be possible to see the transactions going into the addresses that you think are in your old wallets and match them up with records of your sales. That is going to be tedious and it might not work very well.

The best option is to recover your old wallets so that they can show you all of the transactions that you care about.

Another option is to just estimate the number of bitcoins you received and their values using the records of your sales.

No. Coinbase will send you bitcoins from a different address every time. It is more likely that it is an old blockchain.info wallet. However, if you did receive bitcoins in a Coinbase account, they will have records of your transactions.

My advice (and it might be really bad advice) is to just do the best you can, even if involves making guesses or estimates.
