Well, if I have 1000 usd to invest in crypto right now, I will be investing part of it in Student coin - I don't know why not too many people know about this project yet, it's really a very promising project from my one estimation, though the token price is quite cheap right at this moment, but soon enough, every one wil know why student coin is a very big project in this space.
The remaining amount, I will look for other very promising project and invest it in, aside all the popular ones we all already know, I still believe there are still some hidden gems out there waiting to be discovered.

The most important thing in investing is being able to do analysis, I will make 2 types, 75% for short term and 25% long term, for the long term (more than 3 years) I buy ETH, BNB and Cardano. And for the short term (less than 1 months) I will buy Money Token, Qash, and Fusion.

$1000 is good to invest. My choice of investment will be on TRX, dogecoin, xrp, Casper, Ada. NFT gaming project now be trend in crypto market  follow the DEFI , DEX and NFT project. Market potentially growth alot since alot investors and gamer outside from crypto market will play this game due its reward from play to earn feature. Axie and Alice main concern now , but in near future we will see another great project such as Vulcan Forged.

for me the safety of funds is the most important thing. so with those funds I'll put 50% on bitcoin, and the rest we can sort it out on other altcoins on the top rankings, like eth and bnb. and use a little money if you want to speculate on a new altcoin that you think has good prospects

Choosing top altcoins for a long term holding isnt enough to achieve success. Every position in the top can be corrected with a news and announcements. Research is a must. Lets take EOS for example. During 3 years, there was only one huge pump, but besides this, EOS price barely change. EOS used to be on top positions. If someone would have bought it, and missed that pump in may, during 2-3 years his profit from long term holding would be practically invisible.

2-3 years waiting is only advisable for those who has funds in which can be forgotten for those years , but what if His budget is only for a month or 2 and then he will need the funds again?

Well said! and yeah you are right. But if you focused yourself and you are good in doing your research those hidden gems are available inside this industry, the amount of your initial investment is well enough to split between old and new coins.

Best to allocate portions of your money for old and progressive coins and adds up some initial offerings and play wiser 

Take time and never to rush things better to learn things slowly but surely than take a quick ride and lose a lot.
