What token do you have? as well as how much and how much is the value in one unit, so that it's easy to exchange, try to see which market the token can be traded in, because if it doesn't exist, then your token can only be a display in your wallet.

Metamask is a ERC20 supported wallet. As you know, ERC20 tokens now needs huge transaction fees like $10-$100 based on time and token demand. To do any swap from metamask, you have to spend huge fees but probably you don't have enough funds to bear swap fees. That's why you can't swap or transaction from Metamask. Before making new transaction, you can check fees from-

It's not using its own formula but i guess metamask was using API from etherscan to determine the price of the token. That means if the price that being showed on metamask was getting from the etherscan.
It can be displayed incorrectly and i have been seeing it so many times when worthless tokens worth a lot of money.

You can check it through the contract and you can use this https://info.uniswap.org/token/addyourcontractaddress and you can also check it on CMC.

Probably they are using coin tracking website like coinmarketcap for the USD price value as source but for sure it may show incorrect funds due to bugs, so you always need to check the USD balance of a coin by cross checking with an exchange or Coinmarketcap to avoid any confusion and if you found any bugs then you can report it to Metamask.

Although Metamask is prominent for supporting ERC tokens but nowadays they are also supporting other upcoming networks like BSC, HECO and so on, therefore try and know the network of the token you are trying to swap, that is one point. Another point is, if swapping is not working then there is every possiblity that it is an ERC token, this is because you were not able to swap owing to high gas fees  witnessed on the Ethereum network nowadays. So my suggestion is to add more Ethereum for gas fees and try again or import your wallet to another wallet application like Imtoken or Trust wallet, then use the DApp browser to visit the swap link and try again.

Possible, if the data is coming incorrectly from the source. Also liquidity of a single token varies with exchanges. On some exchanges there might be a marginal difference than another well liquidated exchange. This depends on an individual token.

Taking the fact that majority of tokens are nowadays exchanged via DEXes like Uniswap and Sushi, if you havent done anything wrong in that procedure, the process should be smooth.

If the tokens are no longer on the exchange or the volume is practically zero why is their value displayed? This should be fixed

A token cannot be removed completely from existence. There will be some wallets holding it and still not been delisted from exchanges which is the most extreme step that can be taken. It is not the job of the  price/market cap aggregators to do this segregation, they make a list of what is there in the market because someone who needs the info can get it using their service.

Volume is not exactly zero for any shitcoin. However this is one of the bad effects of having an unregulated marketplace and shitcoins being created out of the blue.

If you are having such a coin, then your are out of luck and probably looking at a loss unless it goes up in price.

First, what is the name of the coin for better clarification,?Is the coin you want to swap listed on decentralized exchange? Is it connected to your metamask wallet?

Besides, before you can swap a coin, make sure you have;
_High gas fee as swapping fee.
_Be sure the coin is listed on DEX,
_Connect your metamask wallet to Dex for easy swapping.
Also, the value of your coin is reflected from the value shown on coinmarketcap and CoinGecko platforms, therefore, it may not reflect on either metamask or etherscan but eth explorer vise versa.
