Hello team,

I am getting a bit confused here.

3 years ago when I built my RX580 rig, I was researching what type of risers should i go with and I remember , that molex risers were considered as really bad risers and therefore I went with the 6pin ones.

Last December I decided to expand the operation and managed to get 4 x 3080s MSI videos cards and bought such riser boards :

https://ibb.co/wwXZgks

Now , as I am reading here and there, it seems that these are NOW considered hazardous, but yet again I found the following old thread

https://forum.zcashcommunity.com/t/risers-molex-vs-6-pin-pcie/16763

which states that molex risers are dangerous Cheesy

Could you, guys please advise what type of risers should I get for my RTX 3080s? The ones Im currently using are ver. 006c.

Also, links would be really appreciated!

THank you for you help in advance !

EDIT: I can get my hands on these MOLEX ones : https://ibb.co/2cD82b1

Just buy ubit PCIE Riser version 009s like this one https://amzn.to/3tFiDMy or something similiar and use the 6 pin to power it (never use sata connector). I already used them for almost a year and all still in a good condition. You can also throw away the sata connector that comes with the riser unless you want to use it and burn your house down. This is a good guide on how to power your riser & GPUs and how much power that can run on each cable https://www.gpuminingresources.com/p/psu-cables.html

Thanks for the answer, Kuroma! I just can't understand one thing - when I get the MOLEX risers - should I connect them directly to the molex cable straight out from the PSU?

Dude all cards consume from pcie lane nearly same it is rated at 75w rest power draw comes from 8pin. you can use molex but 1 molex to on riser or 1 sata to 1 riser. my all risers 006 with 6pin, some of them i used 6pin and sata connector because i dont have so many 6pins. it has been 3 years most of them still working, 3 risers went bad only 006versions.

I'm using some risers here and they are numbered 005 I think, they do work for months now without any problem, that part of starting a fire is what I don't understand, maybe you are right or wrong but someone once said the 009 risers are the best but can't return want I've bought for months, also working fine

Here is what it looks like

The risers with number 009s are reported to be more stronger I believe but that doesn't mean the 005 and 006 won't work, I use all these risers in different mining rigs and no problem or whatsoever, I had one that stopped working, I think it's 006 but that's a fault of mine

it turns out that the SATA Connectors are bad, the version does not matter that much. I have made a mistake by connecting 2 x RTX 3080s card to one SATA cable, thats coming out from the PSU.

I have now ordered new risers, which are with MOLEX connectors and will get them tomorrow.
it seems that it is hazardous to use SATA connectors with powerful cards, because they might get caught on fire, because the SATA connectors are maxxed at 54W.

Check this out - https://i.imgur.com/Xg2wvF1.png

The SATA cables that come with the riser boards are very low quality and therefore should be avoided. Yikes! I've been running my rig for the past month without knowing I might cause some really serious damage to my rig... Check it out guys! Seems like it matters a lot what type of connection we have between riser board and PSU.

My GTX1080 video cards work with molex raisers. I do not use adapters included with the riser, but I connect the riser with a cable from the power supply. Consumption of the GTX1080 video card 150-160 watts. If your video card has a higher consumption, then you need to use 6 pin raises and connect them from the power supply. If you do everything correctly, then it is better to buy server power supplies that are made to order for mining and have the required number of connectors.

Okay, i just checked and it seems that I have free slots on both my PSU to connect my GPU risers directly via the 6PIN to the PSU. Can i use the VGA outputs to power the risers, because the SATA outputs are only 6pin and I have free VGA slots with 8pins?
