Hi. back in late 2013 i bought some bitcoin an had it transferred to a multibit wallet. Roll Eyes I did not have much knowledge (and still don't) so the the wallet file was backed up and almost forgotten about. I know multibit has been abandonware for years, so i decided to open the wallet and see how much it was, and move the btc over to a new wallet program (electrum).

I downloaded multibit classic 0.5.19 and opened the wallet, it shows the amount, but i cannot export the private keys, as the password now does not work. I get the error "the wallet password is incorrect", or when trying to remove password "could not decrypt bytes". I was 95% sure about the password, as this was one of three passwords I always used around that time, specially for this kind of stuff. I have tried all possible combinations of caps lock, big letters, and different variants of the passwords i can think of having used the last 8 years.  Huh

After some googling i found many users that have been plagued by a password bug, that causes the right password not to work on their wallet. I am unsure of this is only multibit HD or also multibit classic.. but it seems that people have had the problem with MB classic 0.5.19 also.  I want to try and older version of the software from around the time i created the wallet, probably version 0.4.1 and try the password combinations there, but after a lot of googling i can only find version 0.5.1 for download. Can anyone provide an install for the 0.4.1 version? Or whatever was the newest version in late 2013

I do only have the .wallet file. No seed words, or .keys. So i guess I am screwed if i cannot make it work with the older version?

Please help.

- Pete

Firstly: you should make some copies of your ".wallet" file and work on copies of the file, rather than the original. Better safe than sorry! Wink

You might find that you have to figure out how to compile the application yourself... as all the old binary files were deleted recently from the old multibit website Undecided

One problem you might face, and I don't think it has been confirmed as an actual bug, is that if the file encryption process was "bad" and the encrypted data was either "junk" or written incorrectly, then trying to decrypt it might be "impossible", regardless of whether or not you have the correct passphrase!!?! Undecided Shocked

Note that this should theoretically not have been possible, as the app supposedly attempted to immediately decrypt the encrypted data using the same key and only returned a "success" result if it was possible. However, based on the numbers of people who have had issues trying to decrypt old MultiBit wallets, something definitely isn't quite right.

Have you tried using either:
The "read-multibit-wallet-file" tool released by the MultiBit devs: https://github.com/Multibit-Legacy/read-multibit-wallet-file - EDIT: Possibly nonfunctional, use at own risk
or
One of my multibit recovery scripts: https://github.com/HardCorePawn/multibit_recovery (specifically: "decrypt_multibit_classic_walletkeys.py")

Huh

Huh

Thank you for your help. I do work on copy's as i have the original file stored in cloud backup. I don't know anything about programming, so i guess the compiling might be a steep curve for me. I have also barely heard of python... I will try later and see if I can make the scripts/tools work. So basicly what this does is extract the keys i need to transfer the funds to a new wallet in a different program?

I have now tried the first tool. I followed the installation guide, and tried the command for exporting keys. As i do not know what I am doing, its kinda hard to tell whats wrong, but during installation i think it threw a lot of errors. took screenshots of it. Do I need python installed to run this?

That is correct... the tools should read (and hopefully decrypt!) the existing wallet file and output the private keys so that you can then import them into another Bitcoin wallet.

Curiously... yes... it would appear that you do actually need Python installed to make this work.

Basically this is just telling you that (due to the errors you got above), "mbexport" is not installed... ie. it can't find it. Undecided

Now, the "bad news"™ is that I just tried this program (I've not used it before as I use my Python tools Tongue) on a known good wallet and password combination (ie. I can open the wallet file in multibit 0.5.19 and test/export the private keys)... and mbexport is crashing during export. As far as I can tell, there is likely a required library missing... unfortunately, when I tried to install that library (bcoin), the installer just spat out a huge number of compilation errors Sad Undecided

Given that the "mbexport" tool hasn't been updated since 2017, I suspect that it is just "broken" and probably should not be used.

If you try my Python scripts, note that they need Python 2: https://www.python.org/downloads/release/python-2718/

Bonjour

"""Hello

I have a problem and I need your lights Smiley
I used MULTIBIT OLD version 0.5 software on my mac 8 years ago. I had a Bitcoin address that I created directly in the software. I did not use a password to connect to Multibit and I never clicked to export my private key or the wallet. I used this address for a year to send and receive subs.
One day I run the software and the !! the address is not the same it has changed ... From what I read on the internet it was because of the renewal of the keys. Then I left that aside and removed the software.

1- If I did not export my private key or my wallet, there could have been an export when I made sub-sub exchanges?
2- I searched my MAC, the hidden location of the software and nothing.
3- I searched for deleted files with software but no wallet or private key.

As I made exchanges, I have the address in question. There you go ...

Can you give me some ideas? methods to find my BITCOINS?

Thank you ! """"

There is nothing you can do. Undecided

No. At best, the application might have made a rolling backup of your wallet file.

Without the private key(s), even if you know the address, you cannot spend/move the coins... all you can do is look at them... and that will drive you crazy. You're better of just letting it go, tbh.

Given you have already attempted data recovery... and no doubt been using the computer for things in the last 8 years, even indepth forensic analysis would be unlikely to yield the private keys or wallet file.

Unless you want to pay a professional data recovery service to attempt that sort of thing (VERY expensive)... and you're trying to recover a sum of BTC that is worth considerably more than that cost, it just isn't worth it.
